CVE-2026-69567
massUse-after-free local privilege escalation in Windows NTFS
CVE-2026-69567 is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in the Windows NTFS component, assigned by Microsoft and rated High with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.0. The flaw can be triggered by a local, authorized user performing NTFS file-system operations that cause a kernel memory structure to be freed while still in use; the high attack-complexity metric (AC:H) indicates successful exploitation depends on non-trivial conditions rather than a simple trigger. A successful exploit lets the attacker elevate privileges on the local machine, gaining higher-privilege access with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the host. Because NTFS is a core component of Windows, essentially every Windows system is potentially exposed, though only machines where an attacker has already obtained low-privilege local code execution are practically at risk. As of this analysis there is no public proof-of-concept, the flaw is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and EPSS estimates only about a 0.3% probability of exploitation within 30 days, so no exploitation is known.
What to do: Check Microsoft's advisory for CVE-2026-69567 to identify the affected Windows versions and apply the corresponding security update (typically via the monthly cumulative update) as soon as it is available. Until patched, reduce risk on shared or multi-user hosts by limiting interactive logon and local code-execution rights to trusted users. Local privilege-escalation flaws like this are frequently chained with other vulnerabilities, so include this patch in normal patch cycles and re-prioritize if it enters CISA's KEV or a public PoC appears.
