Local Privilege Escalation (Copy Fail) in Linux Kernel algif_aead Interface

CVE-2026-31431 ('Copy Fail') is an incorrect resource transfer between spheres (CWE-669/CWE-1288) in the Linux kernel's algif_aead implementation of the AF_ALG userspace crypto interface, introduced roughly nine years ago (around 2017, per public reporting) when commit 72548b093ee3 switched AEAD operations to in-place handling even though the source and destination buffers come from different mappings. A local, unprivileged user can trigger the flaw by performing AEAD operations through the AF_ALG socket interface, causing the kernel to mishandle the copy of ciphertext and associated data. Successful exploitation provides a reliable local privilege escalation to root (C:H/I:H/A:H per the CVSS vector). Nearly every major Linux distribution and enterprise platform is exposed, including the kernel itself, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (including AUS, EUS, TUS and Update Services for SAP Solutions), OpenShift Container Platform, Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, openSUSE Leap, SUSE CaaS Platform, NixOS, and Linux-based products from Arista and Siemens. Local Privilege Escalation to Root in Sudo via Untrusted nsswitch.conf with --chroot

Sudo before 1.9.17p1 mishandles the --chroot option: when sudo runs chrooted, it loads /etc/nsswitch.conf from the user-controlled chroot directory rather than the trusted system copy. A local user who can invoke sudo with --chroot can plant a crafted nsswitch.conf (and the NSS libraries it references) in that directory, causing sudo to load untrusted functionality as root. Successful exploitation grants full root privileges on the host, and any Linux deployment running an unpatched sudo is affected, including Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE and openSUSE products per the CPE data. The vulnerability is confirmed exploited in the wild: CISA added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2025-09-29 (ransomware association not yet reported), and EPSS assigns a high 59.4% probability of exploitation within 30 days. Public proof-of-concept references are already available from the researchers who disclosed the flaw.

A single bank account number can be extracted with <200 requests, a password hash can be extracted with ~1200 requests, all within a few minutes. The problem has been patched in commit d22916275c51500b4004933ff1b0a69bc807b2b7. In order to work around this issue, you can also cherry pick that patch, however it will not work without the Rails 5.0 migration that was done in #150, which in turn had quite a few pull requests it depended on.
