European authorities disrupt top drug marketplace, arrest leader

Archetyp Market facilitated high-volume sales of fentanyl, cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines and synthetic opioids since 2020, according to authorities.

Authorities across Europe toppled Archetyp Market, the longest-standing online drug marketplace, and arrested its lead administrator, Europol announced Monday.

The coordinated takedown brought an end to a prolific drug marketplace that accumulated more than $290 million in transaction volume since operations began in 2020. The website for Archetyp Market was seized and its alleged administrator, a 30-year-old German national, was arrested in Barcelona, Spain. 

The continent-wide effort — dubbed Operation Deep Sentinel — follows a wave of cybercrime crackdowns across the globe, marking one of the most high-volume periods of law enforcement action against cybercrime in rapid succession. 

National police in Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden deployed a combined 300 officers between June 11 and June 13 to target Archetyp Market’s administrator, moderators, vendors and technical infrastructure. Authorities from Europol, Eurojust and the United States assisted with the investigation.

Archetyp Market attracted more than 600,000 users with over 17,000 listings facilitating high volumes of illicit drug sales, including fentanyl, cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines and synthetic opioids. Europol compared the platform’s endurance, scale and reputation to other notorious and now-defunct drug marketplaces such as Dream Market and Silk Road. 

“With this takedown, law enforcement has taken out one of the dark web’s longest-running drug markets, cutting off a major supply line for some of the world’s most dangerous substances,” Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, deputy executive director of operations at Europol, said in a statement. 

The drug marketplace’s infrastructure was seized in the Netherlands, and police in Germany and Sweden confiscated $9 million from a moderator and six of the platform’s top vendors.

Archetyp Market’s site now displays a seizure notice and authorities published a video depicting the disruptive operation.

“By dismantling its infrastructure and arresting its key players, we are sending a clear message: there is no safe haven for those who profit from harm,” Lecouffe said.
