Powering AI is an architecture problem

Sponsored analysis argues AI data centers need medium-voltage, inline power architecture after Virginia grid faults knocked over 3GW of load offline.

A sponsored MIT Technology Review piece recounts a July 22, 2026 transmission fault in Ashburn, Virginia that shed more than 3 GW of data center load, and a 2024 incident where one failed surge arrester dropped about 60 facilities and 1,500 MW. It argues legacy UPS-based power stacks fail at AI scale because campuses can swing 70% of load in milliseconds and trip offline during grid disturbances. The proposed fix moves protection to medium voltage (13.8 kV and above) in inline enclosures near substations, improving density, permitting timelines, and backup power economics. A full-scale system tested at the DOE National Laboratory of the Rockies cleared ERCOT large-load ride-through requirements.

I spent a day at a robot “carnival” in Shanghai. Here’s what I saw.

MIT Technology Review reports on China's humanoid robot industry push and embodied AI strategy from a Shanghai event.

A dispatch from a Shanghai humanoid robot 'carnival' describes China's push into embodied AI, embedding artificial intelligence into physical systems. Embodied AI is a key facet of China's latest five-year plan, and Chinese companies are already world leaders in humanoid robots. Nearly 90% of the market discussion centers on domestic adoption of the machines.

Building the materials foundation for AI

Syensqo's CTO says AI pushes semiconductors and data centers to physical limits, driving advanced materials demand and AI-accelerated materials discovery.

MIT Technology Review's Business Lab podcast, produced in partnership with Syensqo, features CTO Mike Finelli discussing how AI workloads push semiconductors and data centers to physical limits in performance, thermal management, and reliability. Syensqo develops high-voltage data center materials, semiconductor sealing materials, and immersion cooling fluids, while using AI agents to digitally synthesize millions of molecular combinations and predict performance before lab testing. Finelli describes a reinforcing cycle where AI improves materials that in turn enable better AI infrastructure.

An Anthropic researcher’s doomsday warning comes at a very interesting time

An Anthropic researcher resigned warning the company is 'gambling with our lives' racing toward superintelligence, timed with its reported IPO preparation.

TechCrunch's Equity podcast discusses the resignation of an Anthropic researcher who warned on X that the company is 'racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives'. The company's own alignment lead co-signed the message rather than walking it back. The hosts note the warning lands differently with Anthropic reportedly preparing for an IPO. The episode also covers Apple's AI-focused event, Stokes Space's $1 billion raise, Cognition raising $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation, and a $50 million seed round for floating nuclear reactors.

What OpenAI’s latest controversy tells us about the future of math

OpenAI says its agents solved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Problem using an internal model, amid uncredited-work accusations from mathematicians Buckmaster and Alpöge.

OpenAI announced that its AI agents produced a proof that the full Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem can break down, using an internal model that outperforms the recently released Astra. NYU's Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic's Levent Alpöge had posted a proof for a simplified version the previous day after nearly a year of work with public OpenAI and Anthropic models. OpenAI denies using their transcripts or training on them; chief research officer Mark Chen reiterated the denial, and the company says it will not claim the $1 million Clay Mathematics Institute prize. The episode fuels debate over attribution norms as frontier labs concentrate mathematical breakthroughs.

Architecting memory and storage in the AI era

Analysis argues AI inference shifts data-center bottlenecks to memory and storage, urging balanced compute, memory, storage, and network architecture over raw compute.

MIT Technology Review, citing Tirias Research principal analyst Jim McGregor, argues that AI inference and agentic workloads make data movement the key constraint, elevating memory and storage from background hardware to strategic assets. The piece says RAG and real-time inference require continuous data retrieval and caching that legacy infrastructure cannot support. It frames infrastructure planning as a business decision balancing performance, efficiency, cost, and scalability in healthcare, finance, and customer-facing AI.

Apple’s Ternus era begins as Nvidia bets on the whole AI stack

Apple's John Ternus becomes CEO as Tim Cook steps down; Nvidia expands across the AI stack while a16z launches a $1.1B Machine Age fund.

Tim Cook stepped down as Apple CEO, handing the company to former hardware chief John Ternus, with Cook staying as Executive Chairman focused on policy relationships. TechCrunch's Equity podcast also unpacks Nvidia's moves to own the entire AI stack, including its Hugging Face acquisition, a MediaTek investment, and deeper compute deals. Other items include robotaxi competition (Tesla Cybercab, Waymo expansion, Zoox paid rides), Andreessen Horowitz's new $1.1 billion 'Machine Age' fund, and the $285 million GoPro acquisition.

Facilitating AI integration with simplicity at scale

Jabil's SAP IT director says simplifying integration across 100+ sites in 30+ countries with SAP Integration Suite created the data backbone for AI.

In an MIT Technology Review Business Lab podcast produced in partnership with SAP, Jabil SAP IT director Harish Manohar described consolidating fragmented tools across more than 100 sites in over 30 countries using SAP Integration Suite. The manufacturer, with 140,000-plus employees and more than 400 top-brand customers, says a standardized data backbone enables real-time supply chain visibility and is a prerequisite for scaling predictive, AI-driven planning and forecasting. The company frames simplification-first modernization as a competitive advantage tied to measurable business value and operational resilience.

OpenAI fought dirty on career-making math problem, says NYU mathematician

NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster alleges OpenAI learned of his team's Navier-Stokes approach and raced ahead using massive compute to claim a full proof first.

NYU mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic mathematician Levent Alpöge announced preliminary proofs toward the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, a $1 million Clay Millennium Prize problem, developed using OpenAI's Codex and Claude. They allege OpenAI learned of their progress and that an OpenAI team then used an 'insane amount of compute' to announce a full proof first. OpenAI research lead Sebastian Bubeck denies the claims as 'false and inflammatory'. Buckmaster also raised concerns that OpenAI could have learned from his Codex interactions, which the company may use for model training.

Exclusive: Paying for frontier AI models buys 4-month head start at 5x the cost

Mozilla report finds the capability gap between best open-weights (largely Chinese) and closed frontier AI models narrowed to 4.4 months at ~5x lower cost.

Mozilla's State of Open Source AI report (September 15) says the gap between closed frontier models and best open-weights models has closed to 4.4 months. Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 scores three points behind Anthropic's Fable 5 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index at 30% of the cost, and Z.ai's GLM 5.2 scored within a point of Claude Opus 4.7 on Terminal-Bench 2.1. Eight of the top 10 OpenRouter models by August 2026 token volume provide open weights, though a Linux Foundation paper found open models earned only 4% of revenue. The report recommends open models as the default for routine workloads, reserving closed models for 8-12 hour expert tasks.
