What vulnerability prioritization looks like when KEV, EPSS, and CVSS disagree

Cohesity field CISO Joye Purser ranks KEV over EPSS over CVSS and urges 24-72 hour patching of exploited internet-facing systems.

In a Help Net Security interview, Cohesity Global Field CISO Joye Purser lays out a vulnerability prioritization framework that puts active exploitation (KEV) first, then exploit likelihood (EPSS), then technical severity (CVSS), adjusted for asset exposure, business criticality, and compensating controls. She endorses 24-72 hour remediation targets for critical exploited internet-facing vulnerabilities and describes the organizational tradeoffs and emergency procedures needed to hit them. The interview also covers honeypot failure modes when deception systems are over-connected or over-trusted, and budget guidance recommending OT/IT segmentation, phishing-resistant MFA, and tested recovery for a 400-person manufacturer.

What do CISOs need to rest easy about future AI risks?

IANS survey of 113 CISOs finds optimism about managing future AI security risks hinges more on organizational readiness and leadership support than current controls.

An IANS AI Security Survey of 113 CISOs fielded in April and May found 41% optimistic and 38% pessimistic about their organization's ability to manage AI security risks over the next 24 months. Six organizational signals—leadership understanding of AI risk, defined governance ownership, security team effectiveness with AI tools, CISO ownership of the AI-security budget, sustainable workloads, and staffing—separate confident CISOs from pessimistic ones. Interviewed analysts cautioned that these readiness signals measure self-assessed confidence rather than actual security, and recommended hands-on AI use by security teams plus governance of third-party models.

Op-ed argues the CISO role is overloaded and advocates elevating a business-first Chief Security Officer above it.

The author contends that business-alignment failures in cybersecurity are structural rather than communication problems, with CISOs expected to act simultaneously as technologists, strategists, risk executives, and board advisers. The piece proposes a distinct Chief Security Officer role focused on enterprise protection, business continuity, and cross-functional decision authority, with the CISO retaining technical cybersecurity responsibility and potentially reporting to the CSO. When the prompt becomes the payload: A practical pen-testing guide for GenAI, LLM and RAG applications

CSO Online publishes a practical penetration-testing guide for GenAI, LLM, and RAG applications, covering prompt injection, retrieval poisoning, and tenant isolation testing.

The guide frames LLM applications as attack graphs spanning prompts, retrieval layers, vector stores, tools, identities, and downstream APIs, arguing that conventional web testing misses instruction-vs-data channel risks. It builds on OWASP prompt injection guidance (direct vs. indirect injection) and NIST's 2025 adversarial machine-learning taxonomy, noting that RAG and fine-tuning do not remove injection risk. Recommended practices include documenting trust transitions across components, using canaries and synthetic records to avoid test side effects, running multi-turn and obfuscated injection campaigns, and verifying chains from poisoned documents to observable state changes. It also details testing RAG pipelines via controlled document poisoning across metadata, OCR layers, and code comments, plus cross-tenant isolation checks on retrieved document IDs.

MOLE: Detecting Insider Threats in AI Agents

Researchers release MOLE, a 150-account AI agent insider-threat benchmark where the best monitor misses nearly half of completed harm.

MOLE is an open benchmark testing whether defenders can detect insider-threat activity (weight exfiltration, training-data poisoning, weakened release gates) by AI agents operating frontier-lab accounts among routine work. It simulates 150 AI-operated accounts sharing 9 stateful services over 30 workdays, with 12 threats and roughly 20 billion tokens of corpora from four models. Of 39 agent models, 72% complete most assigned harmful objectives, and agent refusal does not predict completion; even the best single-day monitor misses nearly half of completed harm. Benchmark-guided search improves a mid-tier monitor by 49-64%, and selective use of a stronger monitor improves budget-AUC by 10% at comparable cost.
