Novel Blue Moon kit targeting Chrome and Windows reflects new reality of AI-driven exploits

Proofpoint reports the BlueMoon exploit kit, chaining two Chrome V8 zero-days and a Windows ALPC bug, being shared across China-linked espionage groups.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit, BlueMoon, first observed on August 28 and used by TA412 (APT31/Violet Typhoon) against US NGOs, mining firms, and commodity trading companies. The kit chains a V8 type confusion RCE (CVE-2026-85046), a V8 sandbox escape, and a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call privilege escalation (CVE-2026-85880), both patched flaws having been exploited in the wild. At least four espionage groups, most with suspected China nexus including UNK_LateNight, adopted the kit within days, targeting US aerospace firms with defense-sector lures. Fewer than 20 organizations were observed targeted, and researchers believe AI-assisted exploit development against upstream Chromium patches enabled the kit's rapid creation and sharing.

LiteLLM Flaws Let Attackers Execute Code as Root and Steal Cloud Credentials

Wiz disclosed LiteLLM flaws including CVE-2026-59822 MCP auth bypass, now in CISA KEV, enabling root RCE and AWS credential theft from exposed gateways.

Wiz researchers disclosed weaknesses in the open-source LiteLLM AI gateway: CVE-2026-59821 allows authenticated administrators to execute code as root via the Custom Code Guardrails feature, while CVE-2026-59822 is an MCP authentication bypass where a meaningless Bearer token establishes a valid session. The MCP bypass was observed in the wild through Wiz honeypots and added to CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 2. A scan of 3,074 internet-facing instances found 294 (9.6%) accepting the default master key sk-1234 or lacking authentication. Fixes shipped in LiteLLM 1.82.0 (guardrail hardening) and 1.84.0 (MCP bypass); exposed instances can leak provider API keys and temporary AWS IAM credentials via the pass-through feature and metadata service, with a related config-check issue tracked as CVE-2026-35029.

The vulnpocalypse rains iBugs down on Apple with record-setting number of patches

Apple's record patch cycle fixes 260+ CVEs across iOS 27 and macOS 27, including CUPS remote code execution, with no active exploitation reported.

Apple patched more than 260 CVEs across its operating systems and software, its largest single patch cycle ever, with iOS 27 fixing 122 flaws and macOS 27 Golden Gate fixing 204. Notable bugs include CVE-2026-43692, a CUPS validation issue allowing remote code execution, and CVE-2026-43689, an iOS privilege-escalation flaw granting root access. Ten CVEs were credited to AI-assisted bug hunting, including CVE-2026-65410 and CVE-2026-65409 found by Calif with Claude and Anthropic Research. None of the vulnerabilities are listed as actively exploited.

Hackers Use Hundreds of AI Agents to Exploit PaperCut Flaws and Compromise 440 Servers Worldwide

A Russian-speaking actor used hundreds of AI agents to exploit PaperCut flaws, compromising 440 servers across 395 organizations in 48 countries.

GreyNoise's Global Observation Grid observed a Russian-speaking threat actor operating from IP 45.142.193.132 deploy hundreds of autonomous AI agents, built on OpenAI's Codex harness with a DeepSeek model, to exploit PaperCut NG/MF flaws CVE-2026-81578 (authentication bypass) and CVE-2026-82078 (unsafe reflection RCE). At least 440 servers across 395 organizations in 48 countries were compromised; the US had 98 victims and educational institutions accounted for 204. The agents paired with Mimikatz, Certipy, Rubeus, and Impacket, escalated to domain admin in 12 of 440 cases, and executed DCSync to exfiltrate the full NTDS.DIT credential database.

Chrome 153 Fixes 230 Vulnerabilities, Including One 0-Day Exploited in the Wild

Google shipped Chrome 153 with 230 fixes, including CVE-2026-87491, a V8 out-of-bounds write zero-day exploited in the wild.

Chrome 153 (153.0.8010.36/.37) rolls out to Windows, Mac, and Linux with 230 security fixes, among the largest patch batches in recent Chrome history. The headline flaw is CVE-2026-87491, a Medium-severity out-of-bounds write in the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine that Google confirmed is exploited in the wild; it was reported by Jihyeon Jeong of Compsec Lab at Seoul National University for a $2,500 bounty. The release also closes five Critical-rated flaws, including CVE-2026-87464, CVE-2026-87488, CVE-2026-87438, CVE-2026-87527, and CVE-2026-87628, mostly use-after-free and out-of-bounds write bugs in WebGL and Cast, plus 43 High-severity issues across ANGLE, PDFium, V8, DevTools, and Payments. Several bugs were surfaced with AI-assisted discovery tools, including OpenAI's Codex Security team, and top bounties reached $5,000 for CVE-2026-87504.

Four Nation-State Actors Used the Same Chrome Zero-Day Exploit Kit Within 12 Days

Proofpoint reports four nation-state actors, mostly China-nexus, adopted the BlueMoon Chrome and Windows zero-day exploit kit within 12 days, targeting US organizations.

Proofpoint tracked an exploit kit dubbed BlueMoon that chains CVE-2026-85046, a Chrome V8 type-confusion bug, with an unnamed V8 sandbox escape and CVE-2026-85880, a Windows kernel privilege escalation using ALPC and the Windows Notification Facility. The first observed use was by China-nexus TA412 (APT31, Violet Typhoon, JungleBamboo) on August 28, 2026 against US NGOs, mining companies, and commodity trading firms, followed by UNK_LateNight targeting US aerospace and defense companies on September 2. Both V8 bugs were patch-gap zero-days: the fix was committed to Chromium on August 7 but reached stable Chrome on September 3, enabling rapid weaponization from public patches. TA412's post-exploitation payload, GemStone, is a malicious browser extension posing as an AI-powered Google Gemini companion that captures keystrokes, cookies, screenshots, and browsing history via a Cloudflare Worker C2.

Four groups caught using the same Chrome and Windows exploit kit

Proofpoint reports at least four hacking groups, some China-linked, share the BlueMoon exploit kit chaining Chromium and Windows kernel vulnerabilities to install malware.

Proofpoint named the nearly identical kit BlueMoon; it chains two Chromium vulnerabilities with one Windows kernel privilege-escalation flaw affecting Windows 10 (October 2018 Update and 2004), Windows Server 2019 and 2022, and the initial Windows 11 release. All three vulnerabilities received patches within 24 hours of the activity. The kit is being actively used by at least four hacking groups, some with Chinese government ties. Proofpoint links the rapid, visible sharing of a historically rare full browser exploit chain to the Chromium supply-chain patch gap and AI-assisted exploit development.
