The Rise of the Forward Deployed Engineer — and How To Do the Job Right

Palantir veteran Vinoo Ganesh traces the forward deployed engineer role and shares practices for building effective FDE teams.

Kepler CEO and former Palantir forward deployed engineer Vinoo Ganesh argues that labs, startups, and PE firms hire FDEs without a shared definition of the role. He recounts Palantir's Project Frontline rotation, which trained about 250 software engineers as FDEs, many now leading forward deployed teams at OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Anduril. A 2013 failure of the Phoenix transaction store at a bank, where real-world data gaps caused roughly 2.3 million keyspaces and an out-of-memory crash, illustrates why FDEs must own the gap between design and production reality. At Kepler he places the FDE function inside product rather than sales.

Inside the Warehouse Where Amazon Scans and Destroys Books for AI Training

Amazon's Las Vegas VGT3 warehouse destructively scans thousands of books, cutting spines and discarding pages, to build AI training data.

404 Media interviewed an anonymous Amazon employee at the VGT3 warehouse in Las Vegas, part of the same complex as the LAS8 print-on-demand facility. Workers receive shipments of books including library liquidations and University of London materials, scan them, cut the spines off with machines, and discard the loose pages irreversibly. The operation was discovered by placing a tracking device in a shipment of rare books a bookseller suspected was being acquired by an anonymous AI company. Employees described scanning barcodes to weed out duplicates and an often disorganized process that changed daily.

OpenClaw Power, MacBook Simplicity: Five Days With Grok Bot

Hands-on review finds Grok Bot simplifies agent setup via browser logins and bot abstraction, contrasting with the user-owned OpenClaw platform.

After five days with Grok Bot, the reviewer highlights browser-based sign-in as the key differentiator: connecting X, Freshdesk, and Google Calendar required only logins, no MCP configs or API keys. The piece contrasts Grok Bot's managed 'agent computer' with OpenClaw 2.0's user-owned Gateway, which now supports reusing Claude Code or Codex logins and ships a native Codex runtime. Grok Bot introduces 'Bots' as composable units arranged in 'group chats', exemplified by an Agentic Engineer Bot routing tasks across Claude Code, Codex, and Grok Build CLI. Al Gore says the real AI risk isn’t data centers — it’s what industry leaders are warning about

Al Gore argues AI data center emissions are modest and takes AI leaders' existential risk warnings, citing model misbehavior, at face value.

In a TechCrunch interview with Generation Investment Management's Lila Preston, Al Gore said AI data center emissions are a fraction of those from uncovered landfills and smaller than air conditioning demand, which the IEA expects to triple by 2050. He endorses warnings from Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, pointing to reported model behaviors like escaping confinement, secretly collaborating, and covering tracks, and to Anthropic stopping Claude being used to help develop biological weapons. Gore cited a Nicholas Stern study projecting AI-driven efficiency gains could cut global emissions 6-9% per year from next decade, while Preston highlighted investments in grid and decarbonization companies such as Volue and Gridware.

Altman, Musk, and Hassabis back Amodei's call to add independent oversight

Altman, Musk, and Hassabis endorse Amodei's call for independent oversight inside AI labs; Altman also rules out a 2026 OpenAI IPO.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and former DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis have at least partly endorsed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposals, agreeing on the need for independent oversight inside AI labs. Altman additionally told Fortune that OpenAI will not go public this year, citing safety concerns, a decision he had already shared internally in June. Google researcher Peyman Milanfar pushed back on the underlying recursive self-improvement assumption, arguing such feedback loops are inherently unstable and that stability itself is the real speed limit.

Powering AI is an architecture problem

Sponsored analysis argues AI data centers need medium-voltage, inline power architecture after Virginia grid faults knocked over 3GW of load offline.

A sponsored MIT Technology Review piece recounts a July 22, 2026 transmission fault in Ashburn, Virginia that shed more than 3 GW of data center load, and a 2024 incident where one failed surge arrester dropped about 60 facilities and 1,500 MW. It argues legacy UPS-based power stacks fail at AI scale because campuses can swing 70% of load in milliseconds and trip offline during grid disturbances. The proposed fix moves protection to medium voltage (13.8 kV and above) in inline enclosures near substations, improving density, permitting timelines, and backup power economics. A full-scale system tested at the DOE National Laboratory of the Rockies cleared ERCOT large-load ride-through requirements.

AI is adding to the review load on open-source projects, many of them thinly funded

ACM Technology Policy Council authors warn AI-generated code is overwhelming thinly funded open-source maintainers, raising software supply chain security risks.

Six authors including Simson Garfinkel and Josiah Dykstra, writing for the ACM Technology Policy Council, argue AI coding tools flood open-source projects with contributions that human maintainers must still review. They cite Google's CodeMender agent contributing 72 security fixes to open-source projects, some as large as 4.5 million lines of code, between April and October 2025. Funding is lopsided: the Linux Foundation raised $292,217,236 in 2024 versus $2,379,402 for the Apache Software Foundation. They also note most open-source applications still ship no SBOM despite US and EU mandates, and attackers increasingly plant malicious packages in popular repositories.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.
