Trump and Mike Johnson think the AI industry is overreacting

Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson reject AI executives' calls to slow development, warning restrictions could let China win the AI race.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an open letter urging labs to 'pace the frontier' and slow AI development, drawing public support from OpenAI's Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Alphabet's Demis Hassabis. Trump told the Financial Times the US leads China in AI and that 'whoever wins AI, wins.' House Speaker Mike Johnson told CNN that rushing AI regulation could itself be a 'national security threat' and urged against panic-driven congressional action.

U.S. Agencies Accuse China AI Firms of Distilling Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok

NSA, CISA and FBI accuse Chinese AI firms including DeepSeek of industrial-scale distillation of Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok since late 2024.

A joint bulletin from the NSA, CISA and FBI accuses China-based AI firms including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun and Z.AI of systematic, industrial-scale distillation of U.S. frontier models. The agencies say billions of tokens were extracted from Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok variants since at least late 2024 through APIs, cloud relays, obfuscated accounts and gray-market proxies, likely with Chinese government backing. Firms allegedly shared premium subscriptions across developer teams and used chain-of-thought extraction and automated failover to evade blocks. Mitigations include subtly altering responses to suspected distillers and correlating activity across providers, clouds and aggregators.

Microsoft has new AI privacy rules for schools

Microsoft agreed to enforceable AI safety and privacy principles with the AFT and UFT after New York City and Los Angeles imposed one-year bans on student-facing AI.

Microsoft committed to ten contractually enforceable principles covering AI use in schools, including not training models on student or educator data, limiting data collection, plain-language disclosure to families, prohibiting AI companions, and requiring human review for high-risk decisions. The agreement with the American Federation of Teachers and its NYC affiliate comes after NYC and LA implemented one-year bans on student-facing AI. Districts can adopt the terms into new or existing contracts starting in November.

The AI policy window is open. We need to act.

OpenAI calls for mandatory national AI safety regulation and backs four California AI safety bills as capabilities accelerate.

OpenAI argues the rapid pace of AI progress, including signs of AI-accelerated research, requires urgent policy action through mandatory, capability-based national regulation. The company endorses four California bills (SB 813, AB 1405, SB 1119, AB 1864) covering independent safety assessments, AI auditor standards, youth protections, and safeguards against AI-enabled biological threats. It also commits to industry-led frontier standards, international coordination, and strengthening internal safeguards such as universal trajectory monitoring and mandatory alignment-evaluation gates for its Astra model. The post references chief scientist Jakub Pachocki's warning about recursive self-improvement and Greg Brockman's "defenders window" concept.

Feds accuse China of ‘systematic’ distillation of U.S. AI models

NSA, CISA, and FBI jointly accuse Chinese AI firms including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI of industrial-scale distillation of US frontier models.

A joint advisory from the NSA, CISA, and FBI alleges China-based AI companies including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z.AI have systematically extracted capabilities from US frontier models since at least late 2024. The companies allegedly spent billions of tokens across millions of requests against Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok, routing traffic through multiple accounts, platforms, proxies, and third-party aggregators to evade detection. Moonshot AI allegedly distilled 18 US models, including Anthropic's most advanced model, to train its Kimi-K2 and Kimi K3 models.

Microsoft says virtually nobody was grabbing NYT articles through its chatbot

Microsoft files summary judgement briefs in NYT copyright lawsuit, arguing only 59,545 of 8.2M Copilot logs show substantial overlap with news content.

Microsoft filed new legal filings in the consolidated copyright lawsuit brought by The New York Times, authors, and publishers against Microsoft and OpenAI, arguing for summary judgement. Analysis of 8.2 million Copilot chat logs found only 59,545 contained at least 16 words in common with news content, with just 24 responses showing at least 30 matching words in the authors' case. Microsoft argues the numbers support fair use, claiming Copilot rarely reproduces substantive chunks; the Times says discovery shows Microsoft and OpenAI stole from it, and the Trump administration filed a statement of interest supporting OpenAI.

Trump blacklisting of "woke" Anthropic deemed illegal by federal judge

A federal judge ruled the Trump administration's blacklisting of Anthropic, tied to its stance on autonomous warfare, illegal.

A US federal judge found the Trump administration's blacklisting of Anthropic to be unlawful. The action had targeted the AI lab after it refused to support lethal autonomous warfare and mass surveillance. The ruling is a notable check on the administration's ability to penalize AI companies over policy disagreements.
