TART: A Modular Tool for Technique-Aware Audio-to-Tablature Guitar Transcription

TART pipeline transcribes guitar audio to tablature with fingering and technique labels, outperforming prior baselines by up to 8.5 Tab F1 points.

TART is a modular four-stage pipeline for audio-to-tablature guitar transcription, combining an audio-to-MIDI transcription model, an expressive technique classifier, an audio-conditioned T5 encoder-decoder for string-fret assignment, and an automated tablature generator. In zero-shot evaluation on GuitarSet, EGDB, and two noisy augmented benchmarks, it averages 81.35% audio-to-MIDI F50 (+6.67 over the best baseline), 71.8% string-fret Tab F1 (+8.5), and 54.08% end-to-end Tab F1. The authors state it is the first framework to generate tablature with both fingering and expressive technique annotations directly from guitar audio.

Why don't machine learning research agents overfit?

Amazon researchers explain why ML research agents avoid benchmark overfitting, attributing generalization to compressibility of successful strategies.

Amazon Science summarizes the paper "What fits (into few tokens) doesn't overfit: Compression and generalization in ML research agents," which investigates why benchmark hill-climbing loops, whether run by human communities or LLM research agents, do not produce rampant overfitting. The explanation formalizes Occam's razor via a counting argument: successful ML strategies are highly compressible, so short descriptions lack room to memorize benchmark data and must capture real structure. LLM-based agents, being resettable and controllable, allow this hypothesis to be tested empirically.

Deepmind's AlphaGenome Atlas maps every possible DNA change in the human genome

DeepMind's AlphaGenome Atlas precomputes impact predictions for ~9 billion human DNA variants in a 1-petabyte dataset; its AVI score beats CADD in benchmarks

Google DeepMind released the AlphaGenome Atlas, precomputing functional-effect predictions for roughly 9 billion human genome variants (about 27,000 prediction values per variant) in a one-petabyte dataset more than 30 times the size of the AlphaFold database. The accompanying AlphaGenome Variant Impact Score (AVI), a small neural network combining AlphaGenome, AlphaMissense and evolutionary conservation features (18 inputs versus CADD's 150+), outperformed existing tools on clinically classified variants, ranking causal variants in the top 50 candidates for 29.5% of solved GREGoR cases versus 12.5% for CADD. A GREGoR epilepsy case illustrates the impact: AVI elevated a previously unclear DNM1 splice variant that lab experiments confirmed as likely disease-causing. The atlas is available for noncommercial use via web portal, API and a Google Antigravity skill, with a commercial version planned through Google Cloud.

Bilevel Coordinated Reflection: A Game-Theoretic Approach to Multi-Agent LLM Systems

Paper models multi-agent LLM orchestration as a bilevel game, proving transcript-only gating limits and introducing grounded-memory SRMA.

A new paper frames orchestrator-worker coordination in multi-agent LLM systems as a bilevel coordination game and analyzes free-form reflection as stochastic movement over semantic memory states, deriving finite-time bounds and an information-theoretic impossibility result: no gate observing only the generated transcript can uniformly improve over text-indistinguishable environments, while an environment-grounded gate can. The authors propose Stochastic Reflective Memory Ascent (SRMA), which accepts candidate memory only when grounded evaluation risk strictly decreases, with geometric or polynomial convergence guarantees. On 500 SWE-bench instances, a Kimi-based instantiation of the full system resolves 72.2% versus a 70.8% public mini-SWE-agent reference.

Google's AI genome system evaluates every possible one-base change

Google's AlphaGenome AI system predicts functional effects of non-coding DNA variants in humans and mice.

Google's AlphaGenome AI system evaluates genomic sequences to predict gene expression, transcription factor binding, chromatin accessibility, splice site usage, and related genomic features. The system is currently limited to human and mouse sequences and a limited set of well-studied cell types, but its predictions generally match or exceed specialized software tools. Researchers can use it to assess whether non-coding variants are likely significant and generate hypotheses about their function.

Google DeepMind Releases AlphaGenome Atlas With Precomputed Molecular Effect Predictions and AVI Scores for 9 Billion Human DNA Variants

Google DeepMind launched AlphaGenome Atlas, precomputing molecular effect predictions and AVI impact scores for ~9 billion human single-nucleotide variants in a 1-petabyte catalogue.

Google DeepMind released AlphaGenome Atlas, a 1-petabyte catalogue of precomputed molecular effect predictions for roughly 9 billion possible single-nucleotide variants in the human genome. It introduces the AlphaGenome Variant Impact (AVI) score, combining AlphaGenome regulatory predictions with AlphaMissense, plus per-variant feature attributions and over 2,500 recurrent DNA sequence motifs. DeepMind reports best-in-class AVI performance on variant pathogenicity and rare disease benchmarks. Early users at the Broad Institute, University of Exeter, and Stowers Institute demonstrated rare-disease variant reprioritization and 22% more non-coding associations across 54,000+ UK Biobank genomes.

AlphaGenome Atlas: A predictive map of every possible DNA letter change in the human genome

Google DeepMind released AlphaGenome Atlas, a free 1-petabyte platform predicting the molecular effects of all ~9 billion possible single-letter DNA variants.

Google DeepMind introduced AlphaGenome Atlas, containing precomputed predictions for the effects of roughly 9 billion single-nucleotide variants across the human genome, spanning hundreds of human and mouse cell types. The 1-petabyte dataset is more than 30 times larger than the AlphaFold Database and includes an AlphaGenome Variant Impact (AVI) score combining AlphaGenome and AlphaMissense predictions for both coding and non-coding regions. External collaborators have already used it to identify and experimentally verify variants in unsolved rare disease research. It is available via a free web portal, the AlphaGenome API, and as a skill in Google Antigravity.

ECHO: A Matched-Contrast Benchmark for Context-Sensitive Turn-Taking in Full-Duplex Dialogue

ECHO benchmark pairs identical-overlap Chinese dialogue examples with contrasting contexts, revealing most full-duplex systems bias toward yielding the floor.

ECHO is a paired diagnostic benchmark for Chinese full-duplex turn-taking that matches examples with identical overlap transcripts but contrasting preceding multi-turn contexts, one requiring Yield and the other Keep. It also includes off-talk examples for diagnosing unnecessary yielding and introduces pair accuracy, which grants no credit to constant-action policies. Experiments across multiple full-duplex systems show most exhibit a pronounced Yield bias, performing substantially better on interruptions than backchannels. The benchmark and metadata will be publicly released.

Claude Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher

Claude Fable 5.1 solved Sir Thomas Urquhart's 370-year-old Cyphral Distich cipher, recovering a hidden royalist prayer for Charles II.

Vals AI reports that Claude Fable 5.1 solved the Cyphral Distich, a 64-number cryptogram from Sir Thomas Urquhart's Logopandecteision unsolved since 1653, in 44 minutes using 176k tokens with no human hints. The key insight was that the cipher's key was the book itself: each number indexes a word in the corresponding Proquiritation, taking the first letter, yielding 'O GOD UPHOLD KING CHARLS THE SECOND AND MAKE HIM THE SUPREME RULER OF THIS LAND'. The model also deciphered the larger Cyphral Octastich (285 numbers) from The Jewel (1652) using page-based word indexing, recovering all but nine letters of a royalist prayer. The puzzle had been listed among Klaus Schmeh's Top 50 unsolved encrypted messages.

Context Engineering Inside the Harness: 4 Mechanisms That Beat Context Overflow and Goal Loss on Long-Horizon Tasks

Survey of four harness mechanisms—context budgeting, compaction, todo-state, and memory—that keep long-horizon LLM agents on task across 200+ tool calls.

The article details how agent harnesses, not larger context windows, solve context overflow and goal loss on long-horizon tasks, citing Chroma's Context Rot report showing 18 LLMs (GPT-4.1, Claude 4, Gemini 2.5, Qwen3) degrade on long inputs. Concrete implementations include LangChain Deep Agents offloading tool responses over 20,000 tokens to the filesystem and truncating old tool calls at 85% window usage, and Claude Code capping auto memory at 25KB while re-reading the 5 most recently modified files after compaction. OpenAI's Responses API now offers server-side compaction via context_management with a standalone /responses/compact endpoint, which Codex uses for long-running coding tasks. Manus reports a roughly 100:1 input-to-output token ratio per ~50-tool-call task, motivating todo.md state recitation to prevent goal drift.

X-AuT: Progressive Audio-Encoder Compression for Speech LLMs with Cross-Scale Distillation

XPeng AI's X-AuT prunes speech LLM audio encoders, cutting Qwen3-ASR-0.6B error from 5.61% to 5.27% with fewer parameters.

X-AuT is a progressive compression framework for speech LLM audio encoders that selects layer combinations via short behavioral probes and restores pruned models using cross-scale distillation and LoRA finetuning while keeping the language-model backbone frozen. Compressing Qwen3-ASR-0.6B from 18 to 16 audio-encoder layers lowered macro-average error from 5.61% to 5.27% on ten Chinese-English benchmarks. A 14-layer model reached 5.75% error with 20.7% fewer audio-tower parameters, and progressive pruning outperformed direct pruning (5.75% vs 6.73%).

The Pelican comparison grid for Astra is pretty interesting

Simon Willison's pelican SVG comparison shows GPT-6 Astra producing markedly better images than GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna across reasoning levels.

Willison generated pelicans-riding-bicycles SVGs with newly accessed GPT-6 Astra at low through max reasoning levels and rendered them in a comparison grid against GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna. Astra's outputs were markedly more coherent, while even the best GPT-5.6-Sol images remained largely abstract shapes. Astra does not support a reasoning=none setting, so all comparisons involved reasoning-enabled runs.
