Week in review: Linux rootkit deployed on F5 BIG-IP APM devices, Cisco FMC bugs exploited

Weekly roundup: Cisco FMC and N-able N-central zero-days exploited in the wild, MikroTik RouterOS hijacks, Microsoft Patch Tuesday ships two exploited zero-days.

State-sponsored and financially-motivated attackers are actively exploiting CVE-2026-20079, a critical authentication bypass in Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center (FMC), alongside CVE-2026-20316. N-able issued an emergency hotfix for CVE-2026-86218, a critical pre-auth RCE in the N-central RMM platform exploited in the wild. CERT Polska disclosed six RouterOS vulnerabilities being chained to hijack internet-exposed MikroTik devices. Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday shipped a record patch count including two zero-days, while roughly 67,000 Trezor customers faced phishing after a shipping-partner breach and researchers privately disclosed a zero-click WeChat worm to Tencent.

Google Patches Pixel Modem Zero-Day Exploited in Targeted Attacksnew

Google patched Pixel modem zero-day CVE-2026-58704 (CVSS 8.0), exploited in limited targeted attacks, enabling adjacent privilege escalation without user interaction.

Google's September 2026 Pixel security update fixes CVE-2026-58704, a CVSS 8.0 permission bypass caused by a logic error in the cellular modem, allowing remote (proximal/adjacent) elevation of privilege with no user interaction or additional privileges. Google confirms indications of limited, targeted exploitation in the wild but provides no attribution, target count, or attack objectives. The modem location is significant because it operates below much of the Android application security model. The bulletin also patches multiple critical RCE flaws in IMS, libpixelimsmedia, VPU, modem, telephone and BigOcean components, with the 2026-09-05 patch level protecting devices.

CISA Warns of Critical GitLab Vulnerability Exploited in Attacks

CISA added actively exploited GitLab path traversal flaw CVE-2026-85706 to its KEV catalog, warning unauthenticated attackers can read arbitrary files including secrets.

CISA added CVE-2026-85706, an unauthenticated path traversal vulnerability (CWE-35) in the repository commits API of GitLab Community and Enterprise Editions, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on September 11, 2026, with a remediation deadline of September 14, 2026. The flaw allows arbitrary file reads via improper path confinement, potentially exposing configuration files, access tokens, private keys, and CI/CD variables that enable further intrusion and supply chain compromise. CISA requires forensic triage under Binding Operational Directive 26-04 and urges defenders to review logs for traversal requests and rotate potentially exposed credentials after patching.

Attackers Chain JFrog Artifactory Flaws to Gain Admin Control and Plant Backdoors

Attackers chained JFrog Artifactory flaws CVE-2026-42018 and CVE-2026-42016 for admin control, planting Rust backdoors; CVE-2026-82329 also mass-exploited.

Wiz observed attackers chaining CVE-2026-42018 (anonymous-token leak) and CVE-2026-42016 (token escalation) in self-hosted JFrog Artifactory between August 15 and September 8, gaining admin control, creating admin accounts, and installing malicious Groovy plugins and a custom Rust backdoor. Separately, critical authentication bypass CVE-2026-82329 (CVSS 9.8) was mass-exploited starting September 1, drawing ~406,000 exploitation attempts on September 2 per Fastly. CISA added CVE-2026-82329 to KEV on September 2 with a September 5 federal deadline. Patching does not revoke minted tokens or rotate stolen join keys; admins must review accounts and rotate credentials.

U.S. CISA adds Microsoft Windows, N-able N-central, and Adobe flaws to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog

CISA added four actively exploited flaws to its KEV catalog: Magento StyleSmuggler RCE, two Windows privilege-escalation bugs, and N-able N-central RCE.

CISA added CVE-2026-75650 (Adobe Commerce/Magento, CVSS 10.0), CVE-2026-81963 and CVE-2026-85880 (Microsoft Windows local privilege escalation, CVSS 7.8 each), and CVE-2026-86218 (N-able N-central pre-auth RCE, CVSS 10.0) to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Sansec researchers report the StyleSmuggler Magento flaw, actively exploited since September 4, lets unauthenticated attackers run code on vulnerable online stores and deploy web shells and backdoors; Microsoft confirmed active exploitation of both Windows flaws, and N-able shipped an emergency hotfix. Federal civilian agencies must patch the Windows flaws by September 22, 2026, and the remaining entries by September 11, 2026 under BOD 22-01.
