Liquid Hackers Return 3,400 Bitcoin Taken via Elements Bug, Still Holding $47M in BTC

Hackers exploited an Elements bug to take ~4,000 BTC from Liquid Network, returned 3,400 BTC (~$265M), and still hold ~598.5 BTC (~$47M).

Attackers exploited a bug in Elements, the software behind Blockstream's Liquid Network Bitcoin sidechain, to create L-BTC and withdraw roughly 4,000 BTC (about $320 million) via SideSwap's Peg-out Authorization Key, roughly 95% of Liquid's reported reserves. They returned 3,400 BTC (about $265 million at ~$78,000 per BTC) to the federation address on September 7, keeping about 598.5 BTC (roughly $47 million). The group called itself white hats, demanded node patches before returning funds, and negotiated via on-chain and PGP-encrypted messages; Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet characterized the arrangement as extortion. Blockstream says the peg-out key and other keys were not compromised, updated software is deployed, and the network remains paused pending a coordinated restart.

Google's new AI model predicts the future from sales data, weather, and discount schedules

Google Research released TimesFM-3, a 330M-parameter multivariate time series forecasting model that tops Gift-Eval, FEV-Bench, and Time benchmarks and is on Hugging Face.

Google Research released TimesFM-3, a 330-million-parameter Transformer-based time series forecasting model trained on more than one trillion real and synthetic data points. It works zero-shot and adds multivariate support, ingesting related series, historical-only covariates, and known future events such as discount schedules and weather forecasts, while filling all future time steps in a single one-shot pass. Google reports first place among pretrained forecasting models on Gift-Eval, FEV-Bench, and Time, ahead of Amazon's Chronos-2, the Toto-2.0 family, and its own TimesFM-2.5. Weights are available on GitHub and Hugging Face, with BigQuery integration planned in the coming weeks.

One Symptom, Three Levers: A Critical Review of On-Policy Self-Distillation

A review paper frames on-policy self-distillation collapse as governed by three levers: token weighting, privileged information, and guidance decay.

The paper critically reviews On-Policy Self-Distillation (OPSD), where a language model trains on its own generations scored token-by-token by a teacher conditioned on privileged information such as reference solutions or environment feedback. It identifies collapse, the progressive narrowing of producible reasoning paths, as the dominant failure mode and analyzes it through three levers: signal weighting, the nature of privileged information, and teacher dynamics. The review is restricted to mathematical reasoning, reports no new experiments, and offers a shared vocabulary separating settled findings from disputed ones.

‘Show How 3M Is 0% at Fault:’ Expert Witness Used ChatGPT to Write Report Defending Company in Deadly Explosion Lawsuit

An expert witness hired by 3M used ChatGPT to write portions of his report in a fatal Houston explosion lawsuit, with prompts discoverable.

An expert witness retained by 3M in litigation over the 2020 Watson Grinding explosion in Houston, which killed three people and destroyed roughly 200 homes, used ChatGPT to draft significant portions of his expert report. Discovery records revealed prompts asking ChatGPT to 'show how 3M is 0% at fault' and to defend 3M's standard of care. The case demonstrates that AI prompts used to produce expert testimony can be discoverable during litigation, with hundreds of millions of dollars in liability at stake in the ongoing lawsuits.

GLM-5.3: How Chinese labs keep stride with the frontier

Z.ai released GLM-5.3, a ~750B-parameter model with frontier agentic coding scores, with open weights on Hugging Face planned in two weeks.

Z.ai announced GLM-5.3, initially available only in its coding plan, with API access and open Hugging Face weights promised within two weeks. The roughly 750B-parameter model, one-third the size of Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, surpasses Kimi K3 on many benchmarks and beats Claude Fable 5 or GPT-5.6-Sol on some, placing it at the frontier of agentic coding benchmarks. GLM-5.3 reuses the GLM-5.2 base model with substantially extended post-training based on more RL environments, more diverse tasks and more compute. The post also analyzes how Chinese labs keep pace with the frontier, arguing release speed matters more than distillation.

Measuring Language Transfer in Robot Policies: Adding Greek to a Cosmos3 Vision-Language-Action Policy

Researchers added Greek to the Cosmos3 vision-language-action policy using only machine-rephrased instructions, finding bilingual training reaches roughly two fifths of English performance.

The paper studies localizing the open Cosmos3 vision-language-action robot policy to Greek without architectural changes, using machine-rephrased instructions only. Bilingual training yields a consistent 6.7-7.1 point margin over controls on a 90-task, three-seed evaluation suite, while Greek-only training gains at most 2.7 points. Several common evaluation instruments, including color-histogram metrics and single-goal benchmarks, produced false conclusions, and results were dominated by seed variation. The authors recommend building guaranteed-null baselines and replicating low-resource-language results across seeds.

Public examples remain early-stage: PROMPTFLUX uses Google Gemini to rewrite its VBScript dropper (Level 1), while Lamehug/PROMPTSTEAL, attributed to APT28, invokes the HuggingFace API to generate reconnaissance commands (Level 3). The authors argue most current AI malware augments existing tradecraft rather than enabling one-click autonomous attacks.

What the 3M ChatGPT case reveals about AI governance

3M litigation shows ChatGPT prompts can become discoverable evidence, forcing enterprises to govern AI conversation records.

The author argues AI interaction histories are becoming part of decision records and discovery material, a trend the American Bar Association has already examined. Enterprises are urged to manage retention, ownership, sharing, and deletion of AI conversation logs across tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and Gemini.
