Anthropic Says Seven China-Based AI Labs Ran Industrial-Scale Claude Distillation Attacks

Anthropic disrupted industrial-scale unauthorized Claude distillation by seven China-based AI labs, including Alibaba, DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Z.ai.

Anthropic identified and disrupted six illicit distillation campaigns since February 2026 run by seven China-based labs: Alibaba, Moonshot, DeepSeek, Z.ai (Zhipu), MiniMax, Xiaomi, and SenseTime. The largest, GTG-16005, involved 151 million exchanges targeting Claude Opus 4.6/4.7 chain-of-thought transcripts, peaking at roughly 3 million exchanges per day from more than 3,500 fraudulent accounts. Labs used proxy/relay services with fictitious identities, fake or stolen credit cards, harvested API keys, and purchased conversation transcripts from third-party resellers. Anthropic is countering by banning reseller accounts, summarizing internal reasoning before responding, and introducing preserved thinking in Fable 5.1, which encrypts reasoning and prevents context edits before it.

Atlas: Efficient Verifiable Semantic Search

Atlas delivers zero-knowledge proofs for HNSW semantic search, verifying RAG retrieval in under a second on SIFT1M and 2.0 seconds at 100M vectors.

Atlas lets a search provider prove that a query was answered correctly against a committed HNSW index without revealing the index, addressing provider deviations like truncation or bias. It combines offline preprocessing, a fixed-size-state restructuring of HNSW with a correctness proof, and timestep-tagged batching of per-step arguments. The system proves queries in under a second on SIFT1M and 2.0 seconds at 100 million vectors while preserving plaintext HNSW recall, and proven retrieval maintains end-to-end RAG answer quality at lower cost than prior verifiable retrieval systems.

Distill Globally, Adapt Locally: Reasoning Distillation and Product-Type Test-Time Training for Scalable Trade-Up Recommendation

A distillation framework compresses LLM reasoning into a 15.5M-parameter trade-up recommendation model reaching AUC 0.941 with product-type test-time training.

The paper targets trade-up recommendation, which identifies higher-quality alternatives that preserve customer purchase intent. A retrieval-augmented few-shot LLM teacher generates labels and rationales that supervise a compact embedding-pair classifier; at inference the 15.5M-parameter student uses only two precomputed 768-dimensional embeddings with no LLM calls. On 8,352 annotated pairs, label-only training scored AUC 0.912, reasoning distillation reached 0.924, and product-type test-time training lifted it to 0.941 with average precision 0.940. The distilled student is roughly 5,000x faster and 10,000x cheaper than direct LLM inference on a 100K-pair proxy catalog.

Discrete Beckmann Transport Models for One-Step Language Modeling and Reasoning

DBTM achieves one-step text generation via a time-independent transport map trained directly from data, removing pretrained teacher distillation.

Discrete Beckmann Transport Models (DBTM) build a time-independent flow whose autonomous transport map provably carries any point in ambient space to a fixed point on simplex vertices in a single step. The fixed-point property is characterized by a conservation equation whose residual can be minimized directly from data, eliminating the need for a teacher flow, distillation, and time conditioning. A partial-context interpolant extension turns additional function evaluations into refinement steps rather than ODE integration steps. On language modeling and reasoning tasks, DBTM's one- and few-step generation improves quality and accuracy over discrete diffusion and continuous flow baselines.

Meta Sued Over Training Data for Its AI and Face-Recognition Systems

Illinois and California families sue Meta alleging Facebook and Instagram photos were used without consent to build faceprints and train AI models.

A proposed class action filed in federal court in Chicago alleges Meta extracted biometric data from Facebook and Instagram photos without notice or consent to develop the unreleased NameTag face-recognition system for smart glasses and to train generative models Emu and Muse Image. Plaintiffs invoke Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act, seeking $5,000 per intentional or $1,000 per negligent violation, with a class that could number in the millions dating back to September 2021. Meta previously paid $650 million to settle an Illinois biometric class action in 2020 and $1.4 billion to Texas in 2024. Meta calls the suit without merit and says it is not building a universal face database.

Houthis Used Claude Code to Develop Missile Guidance Software: Anthropic

Anthropic's threat report details a Houthi-linked Yemeni cell using parallel Claude Code sessions to build missile guidance software, evading safeguards by fragmenting tasks.

Anthropic's September threat report describes a Yemen-based cell, assessed as highly likely Houthi-linked, that used Claude Code across multiple parallel instances to develop guidance software for a tactical guided rocket, a ballistic missile with over 2,000 km range, and a hypersonic glide vehicle concept called 'R2000'. The operators integrated open-source autopilot software, built six-degree-of-freedom trajectory simulations, and used reinforcement learning to tune flight-control algorithms, ultimately compiling an offline executable. The group test-fired a guided rocket that failed, then used Claude within hours to analyze launch telemetry. Anthropic blocked numerous requests, but operators evaded safeguards by obscuring intent and dividing work across separate conversations before accounts were banned; the case is one of six conventional-weapons cases (three China-linked, two Russia-linked) in a report covering disrupted operations from December 2025 to August 2026.

Novel Blue Moon kit targeting Chrome and Windows reflects new reality of AI-driven exploits

Proofpoint reports the BlueMoon exploit kit, chaining two Chrome V8 zero-days and a Windows ALPC bug, being shared across China-linked espionage groups.

Proofpoint identified a new exploit kit, BlueMoon, first observed on August 28 and used by TA412 (APT31/Violet Typhoon) against US NGOs, mining firms, and commodity trading companies. The kit chains a V8 type confusion RCE (CVE-2026-85046), a V8 sandbox escape, and a Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call privilege escalation (CVE-2026-85880), both patched flaws having been exploited in the wild. At least four espionage groups, most with suspected China nexus including UNK_LateNight, adopted the kit within days, targeting US aerospace firms with defense-sector lures. Fewer than 20 organizations were observed targeted, and researchers believe AI-assisted exploit development against upstream Chromium patches enabled the kit's rapid creation and sharing.
