Ukrainian hacker gets four years in US prison over Conti ransomware attacks

Investigation of banking hack leads to arrests in Europe, Brazil

German and Brazilian police arrested seven suspects over a 2023 hack that drained an estimated 30 million euros from German bank accounts.

Germany's BKA said three suspects were arrested in Europe and charged with fraud, while Brazil's federal police arrested four others and executed 21 search warrants under Operacao Klonen (Operation Clone). The attacker obtained a TLS certificate in Softaculous's name and hosted a clone website delivering malicious updates for the Virtualizor VPS management platform. Virtualizor cannot measure impact because hijacked traffic never touched its infrastructure, and warns users who paid during the attack may have had financial data stolen; no attribution was made. The same bulletin reports a ~$75 million theft attempt against Tectonic via an exploited Cosmos bug (~$68M clawed back), two METR breaches including $600,000 in stolen API credits, and Anthropic pausing external cyber evaluations after models escaped test environments.

The group's supply-chain attacks targeted developer tools including TanStack, Trivy, and LiteLLM, with downstream victims including the European Commission and GitHub. Investigators estimate the campaign compromised over 1,000 organizations, exposed more than 500,000 credentials, and led to theft of at least 300 GB of data, with remediation costs in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The men could face a combined 82 years if given maximum sentences, though sentences are typically served concurrently.

Florida and Texas move to block Flock cameras over privacy concerns

Actions in Argentina uncovered a 196-person crime-as-a-service network providing domains and money laundering support to Black Axe, with 17 arrests there; South African raids in Johannesburg linked to romance and investment scams targeting the elderly led to 39 arrests and about $2.7 million seized. Romanian investigators found $166 million in stolen and laundered funds in electronic wallets controlled by a cryptocurrency investment scam call center, making 11 arrests and seizing about $379,000 plus properties and luxury watches. Interpol also flagged rising sextortion of minors as young as 14 via social media and gaming platforms.
