Researchers at Hunters.io exposed a cryptomining operation that compromised 3,562 distinct Redis servers after scanning 12,966 targets. The attackers used unauthenticated Redis instances and master-replica replication to plant a cron task that downloaded and ran XMRig every five minutes. The miner connects to a mining pool over encrypted port 443 and hides among temporary files. Impact includes high CPU usage, elevated cloud bills, and data-loss risk from altered Redis persistence settings.

ANY.RUN researchers analyzed a multi-stage phishing campaign delivering a custom HVNC backdoor to banking and financial organizations in Latin America. The chain starts with fake DocuSign and NFe tax-document pages that serve per-visitor ZIP archives, followed by an LNK dropper, an NSIS loader, and a 64-bit backdoor masquerading as Windows Update Assistant. The implant provides hidden remote desktop control, keystroke monitoring, Firefox data theft, Startup-folder persistence, and EDR-aware behavior, communicating over TCP/27015.
Fake Claude Opus 5 app delivers malware and wipes its own tracks
A fake 'Claude Opus 5' GitHub repository impersonating Anthropic distributes RevStealer, a Windows infostealer stealing passwords, crypto wallets and VPN credentials.
Morphisec identified a malicious GitHub repository, Claude-Opus-5-Free-Desktop, impersonating Anthropic to distribute a roughly 101 MB download that launches RevStealer, a Windows information-stealing malware. The malware targets browser credentials, Windows Credential Manager, a dozen password managers, more than fifty cryptocurrency wallets, VPN, messaging, game launcher and streaming accounts, streaming stolen data to its server before deleting itself. It evades analysis with ten sandbox and VM checks, indirect system calls, Windows Defender exclusions, a fake verification window, and a Polygon blockchain smart contract fallback for C2. Only 1 of 66 antivirus engines flagged the sample at check time.
Bisonal Malware Used in Attacks Against Russia and South Korea
Unit 42 details a Bisonal malware variant, active since 2014, targeting Russian and South Korean defense organizations via PDF-disguised spearphishing emails.
In early May, Unit 42 discovered a campaign delivering a Bisonal malware variant against at least one Russian communications security and cryptography company and one unidentified organization in South Korea. The variant, in the wild since at least 2014, introduces a new C2 cipher and rewritten networking and persistence code, with only 14 samples collected to date. Attackers spoofed Russian state corporation Rostec in spearphishing emails carrying an executable disguised with a PDF icon; the dropper decrypts an RC4-encrypted DLL and establishes persistence via a registry Run key. Bisonal has been used since 2013 against government, military, and defense targets in South Korea, Russia, Japan, and India, alongside successors Bioazih and Dexbia.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 identified Kimwolf v7 on February 3, 2026, an upgrade to an Android TV botnet active since August 2025 and linked to the AISURU botnet, which has infected over 1.8 million devices. The new version adds an HTTP/2-based DDoS flood that mimics full Chrome browser fingerprints, consolidates 43 attack commands into 15 methods covering layers 3-7, and resolves C2 addresses via Ethereum Name Service using five hard-coded public blockchain RPC endpoints, backed by a Tor hidden service and a local proxy on 127.0.0.1:23075. It spreads through residential proxies to Android TV boxes with ADB enabled on port 5555 and masquerades as netd_service. The botnet is associated with the record 31.4 Tbps DDoS attack in November 2025.
