New York Seizes a Dozen Celebrity Deepfake Websites

Manhattan DA seized 12 domains hosting nonconsensual celebrity deepfake videos depicting about 1,200 victims, the largest such takedown to date.

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office seized 12 domains used for sharing and selling nonconsensual deepfake sexual videos, depicting around 1,200 people, mostly women, including influencers, politicians, and celebrities. The seizures under New York criminal procedure law represent the largest takedown of explicit deepfake websites to date, aided by the US Take It Down Act. Much of the content appeared to be reposts from the MrDeepFakes platform, and investigations into operators and uploaders are ongoing.

Extradited Russian Hacker Faces Charges Over Excel Malware Campaign That Infected Thousands

US DoJ charged extradited Russian Searzhudin Aktulaev for a 2016-2017 Excel macro campaign infecting ~80,000 freelance platform users with TVRAT and DarkVNC.

Searzhudin Tamirlanovich Aktulaev, 40, was arrested in Cyprus in May 2025 and extradited to the US on August 28, facing charges including wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft. The indictment alleges ~255 fake freelance-platform accounts were used to send Excel macro attachments to about 80,000 users in 2016-2017, deploying TVRAT (TeamSpy/TVSPY) and DarkVNC RATs for remote access and data theft. Thousands of infected machines called back to a US-hosted C2 domain, with stolen credentials and PII stored in the shared email account used in the scheme.

Public records requests by 404 Media and journalist Dan Boguslaw exposed intelligence bulletins from fusion centers in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Florida tracking anti-Flock sentiment, camera vandalism videos, and the DeFlock National Week of Action against automated license plate readers scheduled for August 16-22. The bulletins highlight Instagram accounts like Nomark.Project posting daily camera takedowns, and a device found during a June 25 traffic stop that could locate Flock cameras. Police are advised to increase patrols around ALPR locations and warned about upcoming DeFlock events, including 11 Florida cities signed up. DeFlock creator Will Freeman said the project never called for vandalism and that over 100 surveillance contracts have been canceled through civic engagement.

US, Britain to coordinate on scam center takedowns

The US and UK signed an MOU to jointly investigate Southeast Asian scam compounds behind fraud that stole over $12 billion from Americans last year.

The DOJ and UK's National Crime Agency and Crown Prosecutor signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday for parallel investigations and information sharing on scam centers, largely run by Chinese gangs using human trafficking victims in compounds across Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. The Scam Center Strike Force, with more than 150 personnel from the FBI, IRS, and US Postal Inspection Service, leads the effort; the FBI says cyber-enabled fraud accounted for almost 85% of reported losses, with over $12 billion stolen from Americans last year. An in-person disruption event with private industry partners is planned in London in early October. The initiative follows sanctions on Prince Group and a roughly $15 billion bitcoin seizure linked to its CEO Chen Zhi.

Pornhub's Parent Company to Pay $120 Million to Settle Child Sexual Abuse Lawsuits

Pornhub parent Aylo will pay $120 million settling child sexual abuse class actions, without admitting liability, and adopt stricter content moderation commitments.

Aylo, Pornhub's parent company (formerly Mindgeek, acquired by Ethical Capital Partners in 2023), will pay $120 million to settle two 2021 class actions in California and Alabama alleging its platforms hosted child sexual abuse material in violation of federal trafficking and child imagery laws. The settlement fund begins with $25 million in 2026 followed by six annual installments. The class covers anyone under 18 appearing in content on Mindgeek-operated sites between February 12, 2011 and December 6, 2024. The deal, subject to court approval, adds commitments to age-verify models, conduct human and automated content review, and report suspected abuse material to authorities.

Group of bipartisan lawmakers ask US government to ban several hack-for-hire firms

Bipartisan US lawmakers urged the Commerce Department to add hack-for-hire firms BellTroX, CyberRoot, and Appin/Sunkissed Organic Farms to the entity list.

Senators Ron Wyden and Sheldon Whitehouse and Representative Pat Harrigan asked Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to place three Indian firms on the entity list, which would bar US businesses from transacting with them. The letter says BellTroX, CyberRoot, and Sunkissed Organic Farms (formerly Appin) have conducted cyberattacks and targeted espionage against Americans for over a decade, allegedly at the behest of the Qatari government, and used foreign courts to censor reporting on their activities. Appin previously secured a global takedown order against Reuters that was later lifted, and has been linked to hacks of FIFA officials tied to Qatar's 2022 World Cup plans.

Starting 11 September 2026, EU Cyber Resilience Act Article 14 requires manufacturers and open-source stewards to report actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe security incidents to ENISA via the EU Single Reporting Platform, with a 24-hour early warning, 72-hour notification, and final reports within 14 days or one month. Patchstack launched a free managed compliance service, acting as Assigned Representative for open-source maintainers and providing a managed VDP. The obligations apply retroactively to all products available on the European market. Patchstack, which has coordinated over 50% of known WordPress ecosystem vulnerabilities, already serves more than 1,000 open-source projects.
