Unmasking Cloud Identities: From Behavioral Clustering to Automated Detection

Unit 42 clusters behavior of 40,000+ AWS identities from 125 cloud environments to map functional roles and enable lightweight SQL-based detection.

Palo Alto Unit 42 built an unsupervised behavioral clustering model using UMAP and HDBSCAN on AWS CloudTrail logs to map cloud identities to functional roles such as administrators, backup services, security tooling and DevOps. The study analyzed over 40,000 identities across 125 cloud environments over two months. The researchers show that heuristics extracted from the clustering map can be implemented in standard SQL, enabling role classification at scale without running a continuous ML pipeline. The methodology extends to audit logs from other cloud providers, SaaS and Kubernetes.

Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography

Apple introduces Reference Image, hardware-backed verifiable photography on iPhone 18 Pro using sensor signing and Private Cloud Compute to counter AI-generated fakes.

Apple announced Reference Image, an opt-in camera mode debuting on the main sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that produces securely timestamped, verifiable photographs. The design splits into two phases: a secure digital negative created by cryptographically signing pixel data at the sensor immediately after capture (preventing injection or tampering), then developing that negative into a reference image. Private Cloud Compute handles processing without exposing image contents to anyone, including Apple, and fraudulent reference images can be revoked without revealing the photographer's identity. Apple positions the system as stronger than C2PA-based approaches, which sign metadata after capture, are vulnerable to editing-chain compromise, and can tie images to a device or individual.

Hamming Ideals and Grobner Bases for ISD-like Syndrome Decodingnew

Researchers combine Grobner bases with Information Set Decoding for syndrome decoding, testing feasibility against Classic McEliece NIST Category 1 parameters.

The paper proposes GBDecode, an ISD-like decoding algorithm that fixes only a subset of an information set and solves the resulting multivariate nonlinear systems via MultiSolve, which replaces one Grobner basis computation with many computations on simpler systems. Hamming weight constraints are reformulated using elementary symmetric functions and Lucas' identity factorizations to bound equation degree. Experiments on random binary linear codes use parameters matching the NIST Security Category 1 set of the Classic McEliece cryptosystem, assessing practical feasibility rather than breaking the scheme.

Illusion of Depth: Revealing Hidden Stereo Vision Vulnerabilities in Depth Estimation

Simple repeating patterns let attackers shift stereo-camera depth estimates by up to 20 meters, triggering emergency braking in autonomous driving frameworks at 40 km/h.

The paper reveals an intrinsic vulnerability in stereo cameras stemming from pixel sampling and calibration processes, letting attackers finely control estimated depth of real obstacles using simple repeating patterns without adversarial ML techniques. The attack was evaluated against BM and SGBM stereo matching algorithms, deep learning models PSMNet, MoCha-Stereo, and UniMatch, the stereo-LiDAR fusion model SGM-DDC, and commercial cameras ZED2 and Intel RealSense D435; on ZED2, obstacles can be displaced up to 20 meters farther or 12 meters closer. A 0.5-second attack triggered emergency braking in a popular autonomous driving framework, with feasibility confirmed at driving speeds up to 40 km/h using CARLA. State-of-the-art defenses proved ineffective, and the authors propose a similarity-score strategy to dynamically detect and suppress depth discrepancies.

Scaling Verification of Cryptographic Software with Aeneas, Rust, and Lean

Microsoft SymCrypt implementations of SHA-3 and ML-KEM verified in Lean via Aeneas-extracted Rust models, with AI agents writing proofs.

The paper develops a methodology for verifying production Rust cryptographic code by using Aeneas to extract pure models into Lean, avoiding low-level pointer and aliasing reasoning. Applied to Microsoft's SymCrypt, it verifies SHA-3 and ML-KEM implementations ported from C to Rust and extends SymCrypt with FrodoKEM, ML-DSA, and HPKE. A 237 KLOC Lean development establishes safety, panic-freedom, and functional correctness of 16.7 KLOC of Rust supporting post-quantum cipher suites on x86-64 and ARM. AI agents autonomously write formal proofs verified by the Lean kernel, and evaluation shows verified Rust meets SymCrypt's performance and portability requirements.

A Global Readiness and Sovereignty Capability Model for Post-Quantum Cryptography Migrationnew

Researchers propose a Readiness-Sovereignty Capability Model scoring 57 countries on post-quantum cryptography readiness and sovereignty.

The RSCM model decomposes cryptographic sovereignty into indigenous capacity, indigenous post-quantum control, and external dependency, with a gate requiring demonstrated creation in at least one core layer. Applied to 57 documented cryptographic actors, 20 countries clear the maker gate (15 full-stack, 5 research makers), 11 hold strong general capacity without post-quantum control, and 25 are dependent. Readiness correlates with independent cyber indices up to rank correlation 0.70, while post-quantum creation shows no significant correlation with commitment (0.22).

Witness Encryption via Prime-Order Generic Groupsnew

Unconditional witness encryption construction for NP in the generic-group model, plus first superconstant NP-hardness result for homogeneous MinRank.

A cryptography paper unconditionally constructs witness encryption for NP in the classical generic-group model using an ordinary cyclic group of prime order. For SAT instances of size n, encryption and decryption run in poly(n) time with correctness error 2^-n^Ω(1), while generic adversaries making n^Θ(log n) queries achieve at most n^-Θ(log n) distinguishing advantage. It also proves the first superconstant-factor NP-hardness of approximation for homogeneous MinRank under randomized reductions.

1Password's AI patching benchmark is misleading

Trail of Bits reanalysis says 1Password's 26% AI clean-fix rate is misleading; 86% of eligible patches blocked exploits.

Trail of Bits critiques 1Password's FLAWED AI patching benchmark, arguing its 26% clean-fix headline mixes trials where agents were instructed to apply wrong fixes (22% of data) with trials that prohibited compiling or testing (36%). Restricting to reasonable conditions, 2,634 of 3,067 patches (86%) blocked the supplied exploit. Trail of Bits also reports 12.5% of 2,265 developer first fixes failed in its own 2024-2026 assessments, and released post-patch-validation and review-walkthrough agent skills.

Implementing a White-Box Undetectable Backdoor for Random Fourier Features

Researchers implement Goldwasser's CLWE-based undetectable backdoor for Random Fourier Features models in numpy/scipy, confirming practical realizability with no detectable differences from clean models.

The paper provides an end-to-end implementation of the Goldwasser et al. white-box undetectable backdoor for models trained with the Random Fourier Features algorithm, using only numpy and scipy. It derives two samplers for the core GP_d(b_k) distribution: a rejection-sampling proxy and an exact closed-form sampler verified against its analytic form. Statistical indistinguishability tests covering weight-space and functional black-box comparisons found no detectable difference between backdoored and clean models across sparsity ratios. The underlying lattice hardness reduction was not reproduced, and the work demonstrates the threat is realizable with commodity scientific-computing tools rather than specialized cryptographic infrastructure.
