WordPress adds automated security checks to block risky plugin releases

WordPress.org now automatically security-reviews every plugin release and blocks high-risk updates before distribution to millions of sites.

The WordPress Official Plugin Repository Team launched an automated security review that scores each plugin and theme release during a six-hour cooldown, combining analysis from several AI models and Jetpack Scan, and automatically blocks releases deemed high risk. The change followed a July 28 detection of a backdoor committed to a release of a plugin with roughly 20,000 active installations; the release was withheld and the plugin closed for downloads 26 minutes after Wordfence notified the team. Blocked authors must fix findings and publish a new release scoring below the blocking threshold, or appeal to the Plugins Team.

WordPress announced automated security reviews for every plugin release during its cooldown period before distribution through the WordPress.org update API, combining AI models with Jetpack Scan into a security score. The system already caught a backdoor committed to a plugin with about 20,000 active installations on July 28, 2026, blocking it within 26 minutes of a Wordfence alert. Flagged patterns include missing capability checks, unsafe $wpdb queries, unserialize() on request data, and obfuscated code.

OpenSSL 4.1.0 Alpha1 Released With DTLS 1.3 and Faster Post-Quantum Cryptography

OpenSSL 4.1.0 Alpha1 adds DTLS 1.3 support, ML-DSA and ML-KEM post-quantum optimizations, and GREASE TLS compatibility, intended for testing only.

The alpha preview of OpenSSL 4.1.0 implements RFC 9147 DTLS 1.3 for UDP-based applications and integrates DTLS into the SSL listener API. It accelerates ML-DSA signatures and ML-KEM encapsulation with AVX-512 and VAES optimizations on x86_64, and adds GREASE (RFC 8701), IKEv2 KDF support, and Elbrus2000 (e2k) targets. The release is intended for testing and development, not production, and removes Windows-on-Itanium and Windows CE build targets.

Cloudflare introduced automatic remediation policies for its CASB product, letting security teams define event-driven logic that revokes risky file shares, dispatches custom webhooks, or forwards findings to SOAR platforms without manual intervention. Native remediation actions currently support Microsoft and Google Workspace file and folder findings, with a target of completing remediation within five minutes of detection. The engine is built on the Cloudflare developer platform, using Cloudflare Queues, Workers and Workflows for durable execution with automatic retries and rate-limit backoff.

New exploits cover Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center auth bypass (CVE-2026-20079), a SonicWall SMA1000 SSRF-to-root RCE chain (CVE-2026-83548/CVE-2026-83549), JetBrains TeamCity deserialization RCE (CVE-2026-63077), PaperCut NG/MF chain (CVE-2026-81578/CVE-2026-82078), and Langflow authenticated RCE (CVE-2026-19295). The SonicWall and PaperCut chains were reported as actively exploited zero-days, and a new ESC8 relay module exploits CVE-2026-20929 against AD CS Web Enrollment.
