The Apple Security Update Review for September 2026

Apple's September 2026 updates patch 45+ flaws, including a 9.8 Screen Sharing authentication bypass (CVE-2026-65400) already listed in CISA's KEV.

ZDI's review of Apple's September 2026 security updates catalogs dozens of CVEs across macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS and other platforms. CVE-2026-65400 (CVSS 9.8) lets a network attacker authenticate to Screen Sharing Server without valid credentials and is flagged as KEV, while CVE-2026-65414 (CVSS 9.8) enables remote code execution via Bluetooth. The set also includes 8.8-rated memory corruption flaws in WebKit, WebRTC, CUPS, ImageIO and the kernel, plus sandbox escapes, privilege escalations to root, and arbitrary code execution via crafted files.

Cisco Secure Email Gateway SQL Injection Vulnerability

Unauthenticated SQL injection in Cisco Secure Email Gateway email parsing enables root command execution via crafted messages; patches released.

A vulnerability in email parsing of Cisco AsyncOS for Cisco Secure Email Gateway allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system. Insufficient validation in the email parsing logic lets a crafted email containing malicious SQL statements achieve arbitrary SQL execution and root command execution. Cisco has released software updates, and the companion September 2026 hardening advisory states this flaw is actively exploited.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday Update September 2026 – 974 Vulnerabilities Fixed, Including 2 Zero-Days

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday fixes 974 vulnerabilities across Windows and Office, including two actively exploited Windows privilege-escalation zero-days.

Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday addresses 974 vulnerabilities spanning Windows, Office, SQL Server, SharePoint, Exchange, Azure, and developer tools. Two Windows zero-days are confirmed exploited in attacks: CVE-2026-85880, a Windows ALPC elevation-of-privilege flaw, and CVE-2026-81963, a Windows Update Stack privilege-escalation flaw involving link following. The release also includes Critical fixes for Windows Secure Kernel Mode, VBS Enclave, Excel, and Word.

CVE-2026-50522: Patch Critical SharePoint RCE Now

Microsoft patched CVE-2026-50522 (CVSS 9.8), an unauthenticated deserialization RCE in on-premises SharePoint servers, in its July 2026 updates; no exploitation confirmed at disclosure.

CVE-2026-50522 is a critical (CVSS 9.8) deserialization of untrusted data flaw (CWE-502) allowing unauthenticated remote code execution on on-premises Microsoft SharePoint servers. It affects SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016, SharePoint Server 2019, and SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, with fixes shipped in Microsoft's July 14, 2026 security updates; SharePoint Online is not listed as affected. No public evidence of active exploitation of this specific CVE existed at disclosure, though CISA's SSVC judged the attack automatable with total technical impact.

Critical Cisco Nexus 9000 Flaw Lets Unauthenticated Remote Attackers Run Code as Root

Cisco patches critical CVE-2026-20212 (CVSS 9.8) in Nexus 9000 switches allowing unauthenticated remote root code execution, plus IOS XR hardening release.

Cisco released fixes for CVE-2026-20212 (CVSS 9.8), a flaw in 10 Silicon One-based Nexus 9000 switch models that binds a service to an unrestricted IP, leaving TCP ports 43210/43211 reachable in the default Layer 3 VRF and allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to execute code as root; exploitation attempts can also crash the S1HAL process. 45 NX-OS releases (10.3(1) through 10.6(3s)) are affected, with mitigations including infrastructure ACLs, the Live Protect shield lp00031, and fixed releases identified via Cisco's Software Checker. Cisco simultaneously issued an IOS XR hardening release bundling 7 umbrella CVEs, two rated 9.8 (CVE-2026-20274 for memory-safety bugs and CVE-2026-20279 for access-control bugs), affecting all releases with SMUs available for 14 releases and upgrades required for 93 of 111 listed releases. No malicious exploitation was reported as of the September 2 disclosure.

KindaRails2Shell threatens Ruby on Rails apps (CVE-2026-66066)

Critical CVE-2026-66066 in Rails' Active Storage/libvips allows unauthenticated arbitrary file read and possible RCE; active exploitation now observed.

CVE-2026-66066 (KindaRails2Shell), discovered by Ethiack researchers and independently by RyotaK of GMO Flatt Security, lets attackers upload crafted files that exploit libvips' handling of specialty formats to read arbitrary files, including process environment secrets, potentially escalating to RCE. Default Rails 7.0+ setups using Active Storage with the vips processor are affected before versions 7.2.3.2, 8.0.5.1, and 8.1.3.1; fixes shipped July 29, 2026, with VIPS_BLOCK_UNTRUSTED as a partial mitigation. Proof-of-concept exploits circulated after disclosure, and VulnCheck updated that it observed active exploitation originating from a single French IP establishing C2 to a host in Israel. Akamai deployed WAF rules, but experts stress patching and credential rotation over filtering alone.

Three 10.0 security flaws fixed across Ubiquiti’s UniFi line

Ubiquiti patches 22 UniFi vulnerabilities, 21 rated critical including three CVSS 10.0 flaws enabling unauthorized access.

Ubiquiti disclosed and patched 22 vulnerabilities, 21 rated critical and three assigned the maximum CVSS 10.0 score: CVE-2026-77537, CVE-2026-77550, and CVE-2026-77554. All three involve improper access control that could let attackers gain privileges, while other flaws permit authentication bypass or arbitrary command execution. All but one of the 22 affect the UniFi product line. The company did not confirm whether any were exploited before patching.

Citrix urges customers to fix critical NetScaler authentication bypass (CVE-2026-19490)

Citrix patched a critical authentication bypass, CVE-2026-19490, in NetScaler Gateway and NetScaler ADC, urging customers to upgrade immediately.

Citrix has patched two flaws in NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway. CVE-2026-19490 is a critical authentication bypass (CVSS v4.0 9.3) that works when the appliance is configured as an SSL VPN, ICA Proxy, CVPN, RDP Proxy Gateway or AAA virtual server, with additional conditions depending on firmware and SAML configuration. A second flaw, CVE-2026-19489 (CVSS 8.8), is a memory overflow that can cause denial of service when SIP ALG is enabled on LSN setups. Rapid7 had not observed exploitation as of August 19, 2026, but urged emergency patching; a signature-based mitigation is available via NetScaler Console.
