Weak IAM prevalence rose with organization size, from 87% at SMEs to 98% at large enterprises, and midmarket organizations took the longest to remediate at 35 days on average.

AI models' written reasoning steps correspond to distinct internal patterns, a new study finds

KAIST and Naver AI Lab researchers show LLM reasoning steps like extraction and computation map to distinct activation patterns, strongest in middle layers.

Researchers at KAIST and Naver AI Lab defined eight recurring reasoning operations, including extraction, decomposition, formula recall, deduction, and computation, and showed they correspond to separable activation patterns in Qwen2.5-7B, Qwen3-8B, and Gemma4-31B on math tasks, with GPT-5 labeling solution segments. The separation peaks in middle layers, holds even when a computation step produces a wrong answer, and goes beyond surface-level token choice. Findings replicated on Llama-3-8B, and classifiers trained on Qwen3-8B transferred to GPQA-Diamond and MATH-500. The authors note that using internal states for error detection or mid-generation steering remains future work.

China-Linked Fire Ant Hijacks Cisco Routers to Steal Credentials and Blind Security Logs

China-nexus espionage group Fire Ant compromised Cisco IOS XR routers and TACACS servers to harvest credentials, capture traffic and suppress logs.

Sygnia investigated an intrusion in which Fire Ant expanded beyond VMware hypervisors to Cisco IOS XR routers, TACACS servers and Linux management hosts. The actor deployed purpose-built router implants that hid a GRE tunnel, filtered log messages, captured PCAPs uploaded to external FTP servers, and used TacTap to inject a library into tac_plus and steal TACACS credentials obfuscated with a single-byte XOR key of 0xEF. A Linux backdoor named BridgeAgent masqueraded as a Zabbix agent, persisted via a root systemd unit, disguised itself as /usr/bin/gnome-shell and received commands over TLS on port 443. The group also used Medusa and REPTILE rootkits, SSH backdoors and renamed binaries impersonating SentinelOne and Cybereason agents, while suppressing logs, disabling SELinux and rewriting login history. Sygnia assesses strong overlap with UNC3886 and published IoCs.

Inoculation Midtraining with Learned Neologisms

Inoculation Midtraining confines unsafe LLM behavior to a neologism-marked context, reducing misalignment after unsafe post-training but leaking under nearby contextual cues.

The paper introduces Inoculation Midtraining, which teaches a base model during midtraining that unsafe behavior belongs to a context marked by a learned neologism token, then post-trains on unsafe data within that context. Across supervised fine-tuning and RL post-training regimes, the technique reduces misalignment while preserving transfer of benign properties like German or Shakespearean prose. However, it does not outperform standard Inoculation Prompting, is sensitive to training configuration, and produces a leaky boundary that nearby contextual cues can reactivate. The authors conclude it is not yet a load-bearing component of a developer safety framework.

Fortinet Patches Critical Vulnerabilities in FortiMonitorOnSight, Chrome Extension

Fortinet patched 10 vulnerabilities including two critical authentication flaws, CVE-2026-84390 (CVSS 9.6) and CVE-2026-84388 (CVSS 9.1), in FortiMonitorOnSight and the FortiPAM Chrome extension.

Fortinet's September patch release fixes CVE-2026-84390, a sensitive-information issue in the FortiMonitorOnSight web portal that lets unauthenticated attackers bypass authentication with forged or reused JWTs. CVE-2026-84388 is an improper authentication flaw in the Fortinet Privileged Access Agent Chrome extension that can allow attackers to proxy a user's browser traffic via a malicious website, requiring upgrades to both FortiPAM 1.9.1/1.8.4 and extension 8.0.1.123+. High-severity information disclosure in FortiSandbox (CVE-2026-26084) and man-in-the-middle risk in the FortiOS/FortiProxy Agentless ZTNA portal (CVE-2026-84393) were also fixed, alongside medium/low issues across FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, FortiSOAR, FortiClient, FortiSIEM and others. Fortinet did not indicate any of the flaws are being exploited in the wild.

Sandworm-Linked UAC-0145 Uses Fake Job Interviews to Push VPN That Can Run Commands

CERT-UA says Sandworm-linked UAC-0145 poses as recruiters in fake job interviews to deliver a trojanized WireGuard VPN that runs attacker commands on victims' hosts.

CERT-UA attributes the campaign, ongoing since May 2026, to UAC-0145, a subgroup within GRU-affiliated Sandworm (APT44). Posing as HR staff of firms like ATLAS Business Group and Sopra Steria Bulgaria, attackers lure Ukrainian IT specialists into Zoom interviews, then share failing WireGuard configs and push a custom SopraVPN client from SourceForge. The modified WireGuard build supports a non-standard SymmetricKey option holding AES-256-GCM-encrypted PowerShell, decrypted with the decoded PrivateKey and executed via runScriptCommand. A scheduled task then downloads a second-stage payload on Windows, while the Linux variant fetches it via cURL.
