GitLab’s critical flaw is already drawing internet-wide probes

GitLab patches two critical flaws (CVE-2026-85706 CVSS 10.0, CVE-2026-87719) as WatchTowr observes internet-wide probing of the unauthenticated file-read bug.

GitLab released emergency patches for two high-severity flaws in Community and Enterprise Editions, urging self-managed operators to upgrade immediately while saying its hosted and Dedicated offerings are fixed or unaffected. CVE-2026-85706 (CVSS 10.0) is a path traversal in the repository commits interface that lets unauthenticated attackers read any file on the server and affects releases 18.7 through 19.1.8 plus the 19.2 and 19.3 lines before patching. CVE-2026-87719 (CVSS 9.9, Enterprise Edition only) lets a logged-in Duo Chat user hide a command in a request that triggers Advanced Search settings and password disclosure. WatchTowr Labs reported it is already watching probes that can trigger the path traversal flaw in a single HTTP request, though CISA had not added either issue to the KEV list as of Friday afternoon.

New Windows Defender ShieldCrash 0-Day Bypasses Microsoft Patch to Read Files as SYSTEM

Researcher's ShieldCrash PoC claims Microsoft Defender still allows arbitrary file reads as SYSTEM on patched Windows, bypassing the CVE-2026-69414 fix.

Researcher MSNightmare released the ShieldCrash proof of concept showing Microsoft Defender can allegedly be made to read arbitrary files with SYSTEM privileges on fully patched Windows systems, bypassing the September 2026 fix for ShieldBreak (CVE-2026-69414). Microsoft has not confirmed the bypass, and the new flaw has no CVE assignment yet. The PoC repository contains C++ project files, a Warden.dll library, and an EICAR test archive, suggesting interaction with Defender's malware-detection and file-handling workflow. Reading files as SYSTEM could expose configuration files, credentials, private keys, and other users' data, though it does not enable code execution.

Flextype v1.0.0-alpha.3 Stored Filesystem Shortcode Allows Arbitrary File Read

Flextype CMS v1.0.0-alpha.3's stored filesystem shortcode allows arbitrary file reads because paths are not restricted to an approved directory.

Flextype CMS v1.0.0-alpha.3 automatically processes stored entry fields through its shortcode parser when global shortcode processing is enabled. The built-in filesystem shortcode accepts a file path and returns the contents of the specified file without restricting the path to an approved application directory. This allows arbitrary file reads from the server. Ron E disclosed the issue on the Full Disclosure mailing list on September 3, 2026.
