Fwd: XZ Utils 5.8.4 and a security fix
XZ Utils 5.8.4 fixes an invalid memory write that occurs when a decoder is reinitialized after allocation failure in 5.8.3 and older.
XZ Utils 5.8.4 has been released with a security fix for versions 5.8.3 and older. The flaw is an invalid memory write that can occur when a decoder is reinitialized after an allocation failure. The announcement was posted on the oss-security mailing list by Sam James pointing to the upstream stable release. Users and distributions running affected versions should upgrade to 5.8.4.
Vulnerability fixes in util-linux-2.42.3
util-linux 2.42.3 patches mount(8) flaws CVE-2026-76642 and CVE-2026-78410, which allow privileged operations after mount helper failure.
util-linux 2.42.3 ships security fixes for two mount(8) vulnerabilities. CVE-2026-76642 causes post-mount hooks (X-mount.idmap, X-mount.owner/group/mode) to run even when an external mount helper exits nonzero, permitting privileged operations on the pre-existing target filesystem. CVE-2026-78410 is a time-of-check-to-time-of-use (TOCTOU) issue in mount(8). No exploitation or PoC is mentioned in the release notes.
Multiple Vulnerabilities Discovered in a SCADA System
Unit 42 details five vulnerabilities (CVSS 7.0-7.8) in ICONICS Suite SCADA software enabling privilege escalation and DoS.
Unit 42 discovered five vulnerabilities (CVE-2024-1182, CVE-2024-7587, CVE-2024-8299, CVE-2024-8300, CVE-2024-9852) in ICONICS Suite versions 10.97.2 and earlier for Windows during a 2024 security assessment. The flaws, rated CVSS 7.0-7.8, allow DLL hijacking, privilege escalation, information disclosure, denial-of-service and potentially full system compromise. ICONICS Suite is a SCADA solution with hundreds of thousands of installations in over 100 countries, widely used in critical infrastructure, and several dozen servers are internet-exposed per Unit 42 telemetry. ICONICS released patches and advisories with workarounds in 2024.
Apple Updates Everything, (Mon, Sep 14th)
Apple patched a record 261 vulnerabilities across iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, watchOS 27, and other platforms, with none flagged as exploited.
Apple's annual OS update shipped iOS/iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, tvOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 plus bug-fix releases for the 26 and 15 branches, fixing a record 261 vulnerabilities. Notable issues include multiple kernel flaws allowing root privilege escalation (CVE-2026-43689, CVE-2026-43691, CVE-2026-43698, CVE-2026-43786), remote code execution in CUPS (CVE-2026-43692), kernel memory corruption via malicious NFS servers (CVE-2026-43686, CVE-2026-43687), and WebKit memory corruption from crafted web content (CVE-2026-43715). No vulnerabilities are labeled as actively exploited, and Apple does not assign per-CVE severities. Users report iOS 26.7 being downloaded when iOS 27 is intended, and tools like Little Snitch and BlockBlock need updates before upgrading to macOS 27.
Privileged File System Vulnerability Present in a SCADA System
Unit 42 details CVE-2025-0921 (CVSS 6.5), a privileged file operations flaw in Iconics Suite enabling DoS and privilege escalation.
Unit 42 disclosed CVE-2025-0921 (CVSS 6.5), an execution-with-unnecessary-privileges flaw in the Pager Agent of the AlarmWorX64 MMX feature of Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions GENESIS64. Attackers could misuse privileged file system operations to corrupt critical binaries, causing denial-of-service or integrity loss on vulnerable SCADA systems. The analysis demonstrates a chain with CVE-2024-7587, which grants excessive permissions to the C:\ProgramData\ICONICS directory via the GenBroker32 installer. Iconics released an advisory with a workaround that addresses the reported issues.
