Intermediate verification guides refinement and failure recovery during execution, and self-directed inquiry generates practice tasks near capability limits before downstream objectives are specified. Experiments across six benchmarks, three MLLM backbones, and three visual agent frameworks show strong performance; on ComfyBench Creative tasks it achieves a 95.0% resolve rate, exceeding the strongest baseline by 27.5 percentage points. Frozen policy snapshots improve existing visual agent systems through plug-and-play reuse.

Every MLLM performs better on reasoning than on planning, and the best-performing model remains far below observed human performance. On Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct, supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning improve reasoning more than planning, and audited generated rollouts often fail to follow environment dynamics or preserve topology across transitions.

MiST: Mid-Training LLMs for Cybersecurity

The 8B and 32B checkpoints improve mean cybersecurity accuracy by +13.1 and +8.6 absolute points over Qwen baselines (+27.0% and +15.8% relative). Ablations show gains arise in mid-training and supervised fine-tuning, and MiST provides stronger initialization for downstream fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.
