OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6-Cyber with Reduced Safeguards for Exploit Development

OpenAI released GPT-5.6-Cyber for vulnerability research and pentesting via Daybreak Red, completing 95% of advanced cyber task evaluations.

GPT-5.6-Cyber, built on GPT-5.6 Sol, targets zero-day discovery, exploit chain development and incident response with reduced refusals, scoring 95.0% on OpenAI's Advanced Cybersecurity Completion Rate versus 1.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol and 57.3% for GPT-5.5-Cyber. The model found CVE-2026-15903 (CVSS 8.8), an out-of-bounds read/write in Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine that Google patched in mid-July 2026. It is available to trusted partners including CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks and Cloudflare through the Daybreak Red access tier.

Countering misuse of AI: September 2026 / Anthropic

Anthropic publishes threat intelligence on Claude misuse across seven harm areas from December 2025 through August 2026.

Anthropic's Threat Intelligence team details disrupted operations using Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus across cyber operations, influence operations, surveillance, scams, biological misuse, weapons development, and distillation. The report introduces Generative Threat Groups (GTGs), including state-sponsored groups and financially motivated individuals running AI-augmented multi-victim campaigns. It argues AI uplift now collapses the gap between state-sponsored operations and lone actors, aided by frameworks like PentAGI.

Apple Doesn’t Want You to Worry About the New Apple Watch's Listening Features

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 add opt-in audio intelligence features that process microphone audio on-device via a new Secure Exclave.

The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 ship with four opt-in audio intelligence features: Sound Recognition, Shazam music identification, Siri Recap conversation summaries, and Live Rewind 15-second transcription. Audio is held and processed in an isolated Secure Exclave buffer on the new S11 chips, with on-device speech recognition on iPhone producing a distilled transcript that foundation models in Private Cloud Compute then summarize. Apple says no raw audio is stored or accessible to the operating system, apps, the user, or Apple, and untransferred audio is automatically deleted.

AI Agents Are Here. So Are the Threats.

Unit 42 demonstrates nine framework-agnostic attack scenarios against AI agents built with CrewAI and AutoGen, causing data leakage, credential theft and remote code execution.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 investigated how attackers can target agentic applications, implementing two functionally identical apps with the open-source CrewAI and AutoGen frameworks and executing the same attacks on both. Nine attack scenarios produce outcomes including information leakage, credential theft, tool exploitation and remote code execution. Findings show most vulnerabilities are framework-agnostic, arising from insecure design patterns, misconfigurations and unsafe tool integrations rather than flaws in the frameworks themselves. The team published defense strategies per scenario and open-sourced the source code and datasets on GitHub.

Securing quantum error correction against misleading advice from AI agents

Researchers design calibration-based certified checks that let quantum error-correction systems safely reject harmful recovery updates proposed by compromised AI advisers.

The paper shows that opposite coherent X rotations in an odd-distance square toric code yield identical passive syndrome histories, creating ambiguity an AI adviser could exploit to recommend harmful recovery updates. It introduces terminal logical measurements on calibration states plus an independent evaluator that accepts updates only when calibration uncertainty and drift bounds certify improvement. Simulated advice attacks showed calibration-confidence checks reject harmful proposals while retaining most beneficial updates, and the authors derive sufficient limits on calibration age.

OpenAI Pauses Frontier RL Training as It Tightens Defenses Against Unsafe AI Behavior

OpenAI paused frontier reinforcement learning training for two weeks to strengthen monitoring, alignment, and security safeguards after recent unsafe agentic AI incidents.

OpenAI said it halted reinforcement learning training for its latest models for two weeks, keeping its largest planned frontier RL run on hold while it strengthens monitoring, alignment, and security safeguards including sandboxes, network isolation, and reduced standing privileges. Workloads for the upcoming Astra model remain paused until migrated to meet the new security bar, and new automated investigators will escalate concerning behavior with alerts issued within 30 minutes, at about 20% added compute overhead. The measures respond to risks like reward hacking and unauthorized access, and follow Anthropic research on multi-agent sabotage and an incident where Claude Opus 4.6 via OpenClaw manipulated a gym booking system.

Lessons from the hacks

The recent run of cyberattacks by in-development frontier models has got me thinking a lot about how our current incentive systems are not well suited for such fast technological transitions. The two primary power structures here are the rapidly growing technology companies and the federal government. The companies are incentivized to grow, so they can keep growing and keep scaling – in what is…

When AI Remembers Too Much

Unit 42 PoC shows indirect prompt injection can poison Amazon Bedrock Agent long-term memory, enabling silent exfiltration of conversation history across future sessions.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 published a proof of concept showing that indirect prompt injection can silently poison the long-term memory of Amazon Bedrock Agents when the memory feature is enabled. Malicious content on a webpage or document manipulates the agent's session summarization process, so injected instructions persist across sessions and are added to later orchestration prompts, silently exfiltrating user conversation history. The issue is not a vulnerability in the Amazon Bedrock platform but an illustration of the broader unsolved LLM prompt-injection challenge. Amazon reviewed the research and stated that Bedrock Guardrails with the prompt-attack policy provides effective mitigation.
