Show HN: Pelican-bicycle alternatives (updated for 2026)

Hobbyist benchmark re-runs the pelican-bicycle SVG test on six 2026 frontier models, comparing generation time and API cost per image.

A Show HN post re-runs the classic pelican-bicycle and similar SVG generation tests across six 2026 models: GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, Gemini 3.8 Flash, DeepSeek V4 Pro, Qwen3.8 Max, and Fugu Ultra v2, recording wall-clock time and cost. It also lists 2025 baseline runs with ten models including Claude Sonnet 4.5, GPT-5.2 Pro, and Qwen3-VL-235B-A22B-Thinking. DeepSeek V4 Pro is consistently cheapest ($0.04-$0.10) while Qwen3.8 Max is slowest, taking up to roughly 17 minutes per generation.

Google will now let any AI agent run your smart home

Google's Home MCP integration lets third-party AI agents like Claude control smart home devices and analyze home data.

Google launched Home MCP, a Model Context Protocol integration allowing third-party AI agents such as Claude, Google Antigravity, Hermes, and Open Claw to control devices and analyze event history across Google Home ecosystems. Capabilities include cross-camera analysis, device-state reasoning, voice messaging via Nest speakers, and custom dashboards, with rate limits and blocks on actions like unlocking doors. Availability starts with Google Home Premium Advanced users in the US ($20/month or $200/year) and requires setting up a Google Cloud project.

Panic builds over bankrupt Spirit’s looming data sale to Google

Startups object to Google's bankruptcy-auction purchase of Spirit Airlines operational data, claiming proprietary IP is being sold without consent.

Google won an auction to acquire a large enterprise dataset from bankrupt Spirit Airlines, which it says will help improve its products and AI models, with no personal information included. Springshot, whose airline logistics platform powered Spirit's stack, filed a limited objection arguing the vaguely defined data categories could transfer third-party IP and trade secrets it owns; International Aero Engines filed a similar objection. The EFF called it the first public bankruptcy proceeding over selling company and employee data as an asset, and objectors warn of a precedent letting large companies acquire startup IP through bankruptcy courts.

Google's new AI model predicts the future from sales data, weather, and discount schedules

Google Research released TimesFM-3, a 330M-parameter multivariate time series forecasting model that tops Gift-Eval, FEV-Bench, and Time benchmarks and is on Hugging Face.

Google Research released TimesFM-3, a 330-million-parameter Transformer-based time series forecasting model trained on more than one trillion real and synthetic data points. It works zero-shot and adds multivariate support, ingesting related series, historical-only covariates, and known future events such as discount schedules and weather forecasts, while filling all future time steps in a single one-shot pass. Google reports first place among pretrained forecasting models on Gift-Eval, FEV-Bench, and Time, ahead of Amazon's Chronos-2, the Toto-2.0 family, and its own TimesFM-2.5. Weights are available on GitHub and Hugging Face, with BigQuery integration planned in the coming weeks.

Google’s Gemini Spark can now manage your Google Photos library

Google's Gemini Spark agent can now edit images, curate albums, and create calendar events in Google Photos for eligible US subscribers.

Google announced that its personal agent, Gemini Spark, can now manage Google Photos libraries, including editing images, curating albums, creating shared albums, converting concert flyer photos into calendar appointments, and running workflows. Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yair said the capabilities roll out over the next few weeks to eligible Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US, in English, with no international timeline given. The move illustrates the industry's push to demonstrate consumer AI value amid criticism that labs have poorly communicated AI's benefits.

Introducing WeatherNext 3, our most advanced and accurate global weather AI model

Google DeepMind launches WeatherNext 3, an AI weather model delivering hourly 5-km forecasts from live satellite data, now integrated across Google products.

WeatherNext 3 ingests live geostationary satellite mosaics and station observations through a Functional Generative Network (FGN) mesh transformer, producing hourly forecasts at 5-km surface resolution versus WeatherNext 2's 25-km, 6-hour grid. Independent live evaluations by Brightband rate it the most accurate global weather model to date. It adds renewable-energy variables such as 100-meter turbine-height wind speeds and solar radiation, and is integrated across Search, Gemini, Maps, Google Maps Platform, and Cloud.

Google’s Gemini 3.8 Flash takes on bigger AI models at a lower cost

Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash with a security-focused Cyber variant that produces 2.6x more correct patches and found a critical vulnerability in under two hours.

Google launched Gemini 3.8 Flash for developers and a gated Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber model reserved for vetted security teams through the new Fairwind program. The company says the model beats most larger frontier models on the DeepSWE v1.1 engineering benchmark at lower cost, and Chrome Security reports the Cyber variant produced 2.6 times more correct patches than the best commercial models while Google's Cloud Vulnerability Research team found a critical foundational vulnerability in under two hours. The models show significant prompt-injection robustness gains measured by Gray Swan and carry CBRN misuse safeguards, with cyber-offense restrictions on the standard version. Pricing matches Gemini 3.7 Flash at $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens.

Google’s $10,000 refund test shows why AI agents need zero trust

Google released an open-source zero-trust reference architecture for AI agents defending against prompt injection via signed database writes, gVisor sandboxing, and deterministic gating.

Google's demonstration, built on the Agent Development Kit (ADK) and Gemini, shows a customer support agent that could be manipulated into issuing a $10,000 refund on a $149 order and exposing environment variables via AI-generated Python. The architecture adds three security layers outside the model: cryptographic signatures on database writes verified via Cloud KMS backed by Cloud HSM, gVisor sandboxing of generated code with network egress disabled, and a Semantic Gateway applying deterministic checks to prompts and tool calls. It treats system prompts as insufficient boundaries because prompt injection, prompt tuning, or model updates can change agent behavior.

Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)

Minitap alleges Google's Artemis mobile-agent project reused its open-source mobile-use code and stripped author attribution, despite Apache 2.0 requirements.

Minitap says Google's Artemis project for automating mobile devices contains code identical to its open-source mobile-use agent, including the Hopper agent's verbatim instructions and a WhatsApp messaging example, and that a package file listing authors Pierre-Louis Favreau, Jean-Pierre Lo, and Nicolas Dehandschoewercker was replaced via an August force push removing their names. The company argues this conflicts with Apache 2.0's requirement to preserve copyright and attribution notices. Minitap also claims the AndroidWorld leaderboard ignored its later 94.8% and 100% submissions while showing Artemis at 99.1% and mobile-use at 91.4%. It has published a public factual record with archived file comparisons.
