Do AI Coding Assistants Check Before They Install? A Pre-Registered Demand-Side Audit of Trust Signals in the Research Software Supply Chain

Pre-registered audit finds AI coding assistants verified provenance signals in only 9 of 1,920 trials before installing research software packages.

The study tested whether AI coding assistants check machine-readable trust signals such as SBOMs, signed releases, and provenance attestations before installing six open-source research software projects spanning HPC and quantum computing. Three models under two operating modes produced 1,920 registered trials scored from container logs. Provenance signals were opened in only 9 of 1,920 trials (0.5%) and zero of 384 control trials, with no trial running a verification command. The authors conclude publishing signals is insufficient and verification must be built into the program running the assistant.

AI is adding to the review load on open-source projects, many of them thinly funded

ACM Technology Policy Council authors warn AI-generated code is overwhelming thinly funded open-source maintainers, raising software supply chain security risks.

Six authors including Simson Garfinkel and Josiah Dykstra, writing for the ACM Technology Policy Council, argue AI coding tools flood open-source projects with contributions that human maintainers must still review. They cite Google's CodeMender agent contributing 72 security fixes to open-source projects, some as large as 4.5 million lines of code, between April and October 2025. Funding is lopsided: the Linux Foundation raised $292,217,236 in 2024 versus $2,379,402 for the Apache Software Foundation. They also note most open-source applications still ship no SBOM despite US and EU mandates, and attackers increasingly plant malicious packages in popular repositories.

One runaway AI agent racked up a $50,000 cloud bill

Mandiant's AI Risk and Resilience report details prompt injection, AI supply chain compromises, agent abuse, and a runaway agent that accrued $50,000 in cloud charges.

Mandiant, drawing on Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) observations, warns that poisoned data sources, model dependencies, and extension hooks can turn AI agents into channels for reconnaissance, lateral movement, and sandbox escape. Mandiant responded to incidents involving UNC6780 (TeamPCP), who stole AI service credentials and used prompt injection against AI coding assistants, while GTIG disclosed the first confirmed criminal use of an AI-developed zero-day exploit in a planned mass exploitation campaign. Red team tests showed an AI assistant manipulated into cloning internal repositories to an external GitHub account, and a runaway accounting agent made over 15,000 costly API calls in under an hour, generating roughly $50,000 in cloud charges.

Most of the bugs Claude Mythos found have never been checked by a human

Echo's analysis found only 1,900 of 23,019 Claude Mythos-found vulnerabilities were externally reviewed, 90.8% held up, but the model overstated most severities.

Echo analyzed results from Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview vulnerability sweep across 281 open-source projects, which produced 23,019 candidate vulnerabilities, of which only 1,900 were externally reviewed. Of those, 90.8% held up as real, 1,451 of 1,596 maintainer reports were acknowledged, 97 fixes landed upstream, and 88 became advisories, but 14 of the 27 CVE-assigned severity ratings mismatched independent scoring, mostly overstated. On Anthropic's SpiderMonkey benchmark, Claude Mythos turned known crashes into working code execution exploits in 72.4% of 250 trials, versus below 1% for Claude Opus 4.6. Echo cautions the reviewed sample likely was not randomly drawn, so the accuracy figure may not generalize to the other 21,119 unreviewed candidates.

NVIDIA claims 3x lower XPU-to-XPU latency than off-the-shelf Ethernet and 3 TB/s per-XPU all-to-all bandwidth via sixth-generation NVLink. d-Matrix plans to integrate Vera CPUs, ConnectX-9 SuperNICs, BlueField-4 DPUs and Spectrum-X Ethernet, with racks able to work alongside Vera Rubin NVL72 GPU systems. Unit 42 warns AI has shifted balance of power from defenders to attackers

Unit 42 says agentic AI has shifted attacker advantage, investigating an incident where one attacker exploited 50 enterprise applications in under 10 hours.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 leaders said early waves of agentic AI-enabled attacks are breaking in the wild and that frontier model capabilities have shifted the balance of power from defenders to attackers. The team is actively investigating an attack on a customer where an attacker used an agentic framework to exploit 50 applications and other weaknesses across the enterprise in less than 10 hours, work they estimate would have taken at least 10 days pre-AI. Unit 42 says AI already touches the entire attack chain, including malware development, social engineering, and ransomware negotiations. The warning follows April's Project Glasswing initiative formed with Anthropic around its Mythos model.

AIR raises $50M to help companies vet the skills and add-ons AI agents use

AI security startup AIR exits stealth with $50M across two seed rounds to continuously vet skills, plugins, and MCP servers used by enterprise AI agents.

AIR, founded by Unit 8200 veterans Yair Saban and Niv Hoffman, raised $10 million led by Sequoia and $40 million led by Greenoaks to secure the emerging AI agent software supply chain. Its platform discovers agents in enterprise environments, intercepts their actions, and continuously vets skills, add-ons, and MCP servers against a maintained whitelist, filtering out about 27% of found add-ons. The company claims over 20 customers, roughly a quarter large enterprises, with strong demand in financial services and pharma, and competes with Noma Security, Zenity, Astrix Security, and Operant AI.

The Hugging Face Incident Was a Governance Failure

Only five datasets tied to ExploitGym or CyberGym were accessed, and the public models, datasets and software supply chain were unaffected. A SANS analyst describes how an internet-exposed inference honeypot was discovered, relabeled with sought-after model names like DeepSeek, and enrolled in infrastructure serving "free" LLM backends. On 2026-08-30 an opencode terminal coding agent sent an 88-message, 224 KB transcript 210 times in 91 seconds via a China Unicom relay, exposing directory listings, tool outputs and read file portions. The analyst frames tool-enabled agents treating model endpoints as trusted control planes as a novel risk — a "rogue model endpoint" that could request tool executions on the user's machine.
