Production data in testing is still common, and Tricentis' CISO wants it gone

Tricentis CISO Erika Dean urges keeping production data out of test environments and describes red-teaming that caught a prompt injection gap.

In a Help Net Security interview, Tricentis CISO Erika Dean recommends keeping production data out of QA and testing environments, even in finance and healthcare, where weaker QA controls create risk. Her team red-teamed an agentic chatbot before launch, found a prompt injection gap, and held the release for a week until it was fixed. She says vendors who cannot explain data residency, retention, and model training use are disqualified regardless of product quality.

Fortinet expands AI security portfolio with Virtue AI acquisition

Fortinet acquired Virtue AI to add agent red-teaming, MCP scanning and runtime guardrails to its AI security portfolio.

Fortinet acquired Virtue AI to extend its Security for AI strategy beyond FortiAIGate, which protects LLMs from prompt injection, data leakage and model poisoning. Virtue AI brings automated agentic red-teaming across 50+ sandboxed environments and 14 domains, agent discovery and governance including MCP tool scanning, continuous AI validation, and real-time guardrails across text, images, video, audio and code. Financial terms were not disclosed and the consideration is immaterial to Fortinet; Gartner projects the AI security market to grow from $2.8B in 2026 to $16.4B by 2030.

A Cyber Range Evaluation of Autonomous Network Incident Response Agents

Cyber range evaluation shows reinforcement learning incident response agents defend emulated networks more efficiently than heuristic policies, depending heavily on adversary behavior.

The paper evaluates agents for automated network intrusion response in a cyber range designed for human operator training, featuring variable topology, red-team emulation, and simulated users. Alerts are generated by a SIEM platform and mapped to a data modeling language used by the agents, with reinforcement learning policies optimized to minimize combined defense and availability costs using a cyber attack simulator. Reinforcement learning agents defended the system more efficiently than heuristic policies, with performance highly dependent on the adversary policy and simulated user behavior.

Water sector passes, government sector fails attempts to spot and halt simulated CISA attack

CISA red teamers compromised both a government and a water organization; water defenders detected and contained the simulated attack, government defenders did not.

CISA's red team gained initial access, elevated domain privileges, and lateral movement into sensitive business systems and cloud resources at an unnamed government organization, whose SOC ignored low- and medium-severity EDR alerts buried under thousands of false positives. A water organization's SOC quarantined phishing-compromised workstations within 2, 10, and 20 minutes, and later detected and isolated intrusions reaching the OT DMZ bastion host. Both organizations underestimated cloud risk, lacked Microsoft Conditional Access for workload identities, and had no process to revoke compromised access and refresh tokens. This is one of CISA's rare public red-team reports since 2023.
