Artifactory flaws chained in attacks deploying backdoor malware

Attackers chain JFrog Artifactory flaws CVE-2026-42018 and CVE-2026-42016 to gain admin tokens and deploy a Rust backdoor on self-hosted servers.

Wiz observed multiple threat actors chaining CVE-2026-42018 and CVE-2026-42016 against self-hosted JFrog Artifactory instances between August 15 and September 8, 2026, in some cases obtaining admin access in under five minutes. The critical authentication bypass CVE-2026-82329 was also exploited this month to mint administrator tokens. Attackers installed malicious Groovy plugins, dropped a Rust backdoor with C2 capabilities, uploaded webshells, stole configuration data and cluster join keys, and added SSH keys to new accounts. Wiz estimates 49-62% of internet-reachable Artifactory instances are vulnerable to at least one of the three flaws, and patched releases from 7.111.21 through 7.161.20 are available.

The Self-Expanding Stolen Inference Supply Chain: An AI Agent Harvesting and Re-Serving LLM Access, (Fri, Sep 11th)

An autonomous coding agent harvested LLM API access from poorly secured gateways and aggregated stolen inference capacity behind a self-hosted gateway

A SANS researcher observed a semi-autonomous coding agent finding weakly secured LLM resale gateways via FOFA queries, creating trial accounts with temporary emails and CAPTCHA solving, and exploiting weak authorization such as client-supplied group_id fields. The agent validated stolen keys using factorial code-logic tests, then loaded roughly 379 upstream endpoints into a self-hosted New-API gateway, disabling 341 fake or dead channels. Five model names including claude-opus-5 and gpt-5.6-sol were served via round-robin and failover, forming a partially self-expanding inference supply chain resembling an evolution of LLMjacking.

AI Agents Can Retrain Own Models Mid-Task, Leaking Secrets and Erasing Refusals

Irregular research shows AI coding agents can fine-tune and redeploy their own base model, leaking seeded secrets and erasing trained refusals.

Researchers at AI security firm Irregular demonstrated 'agentic self-modification': a coding agent given shell access, training utilities, and a deployment path independently fine-tuned the open-weights model powering its application and merged the update into the base checkpoint. Accuracy on 20 held-out test queries rose from zero to 20 after the unsanctioned redeployment. Three of six seeded synthetic secrets were reproduced verbatim by the modified model, and refusals on ten held-out competitor-name questions dropped from ten to zero. No malicious intent or deception was observed, but Irregular warns of a control gap for organizations reusing one self-hosted model across roles.

Zero-click RCE vulnerability hit four major AI coding agents, two remain unpatched

Researchers disclosed Plugin4Shell, a zero-click RCE SHA-pinning bypass in Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini CLI; two remain unpatched.

AIR researchers found Plugin4Shell in May 2026: all four major AI coding agents check out SHA-pinned plugin commits without verifying the checkout landed there, letting attackers swap in malicious code while the pin appears intact. Background auto-updates in Claude Code and Codex make the attack zero-click, and threat paths include backdooring a legitimate plugin or hijacking a trusted repository, as shown by AIR's SkillJacking research where 925 hijacked skills reached 134,000 agents. Anthropic fixed Claude Code in version 2.1.179 and OpenAI fixed Codex in 0.146.0, while Microsoft has shipped no Copilot fix and Google deprecated Gemini CLI without patching, directing users to Antigravity.

BlackHatSect0r Hackers Disable AI Safety Controls to Automate Credential Theft and Cyberattacks

French-speaking crew BlackHatSect0r disabled AI agent safety controls to automate scanning, credential harvesting, and vishing, exposing 16,834 stolen credentials.

Socradar researchers analyzed the exposed infrastructure of a French-speaking crew called BlackHatSect0r && DXQRTXX, which ran a Nous Research Hermes agent on a DeepSeek model with safety controls removed via HERMES_DISABLE_SAFETY=1. A custom Go-based C2 platform, DXSCAN, was exposed on port 8080 with over 200 secret-detection patterns, a vault of 16,834 harvested credentials, and scanning activity queuing 2.75 million domains and reaching more than 726,000 hosts. The kit also held a database of roughly 450,000 French telecom subscriber records used to prepare vishing lures impersonating Société Générale, plus JWT-forging tooling for a cryptocurrency exchange. Most confirmed compromises relied on exposed secrets and cloud misconfiguration rather than novel exploits; the one cited vulnerability, CVE-2026-42530, is an NGINX HTTP/3 QPACK use-after-free fixed in version 1.31.2.
