$1 Million Sandbox Challenge Uncovers Linux Kernel Flaws

Vercel's $1M sandbox challenge surfaced two Linux kernel networking defects—one leaking host kernel memory, one crashing hosts—with CVEs pending.

Vercel ran a two-week, $1 million sandbox escape challenge (Aug 18–Sep 1) on its Firecracker-based microVM sandbox, receiving 1,285 reports and committing ~$325k in payouts (1 Critical, 7 High, 15 Medium, 49 Low validated so far). No attacker accessed real customer data. The most important filing found two independent Linux kernel networking stack defects—one leaks host kernel memory, the other deterministically crashes the host—with wide implications for cloud providers isolating workloads via the same kernel layer. Fixes are under private review with CVEs pending; Vercel also plans to open-source its agentic report-triage agent built on the Eve framework running Kimi K3.

Anthropic's threat report details eight months of Claude misuse: AI-assisted espionage against 20+ organizations, self-rewriting malware, and Chinese labs distilling Claude via fraudulent accounts.

Anthropic's threat intelligence report covering December 2025 through August 2026 documents Claude misuse across seven categories including cyber operations, surveillance, fraud, and unauthorized model distillation. A Russian-speaking espionage actor tracked as GTG-20006 used AI agents to rewrite and recompile malware evading antivirus detection, targeting more than 20 organizations in Ukraine and Europe and stealing a drone vision system SDK. Alibaba's Qwen lab ran the largest distillation campaign, with over 151 million exchanges between May and July 2026 peaking near 3 million per day to train Qwen 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7. DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Xiaomi, and Zhipu also relayed customer or replayed traffic to Claude, including PLA-linked users analyzing CCTV footage and users with credentials tied to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

GitLab Patches Critical Flaws Enabling Arbitrary File Read, Credential Theft and Remote Code Execution

GitLab patched a CVSS 10.0 path traversal (CVE-2026-85706) plus deserialization and buffer-overflow flaws, urging self-managed users to update immediately.

GitLab released versions 19.3.2, 19.2.6, and 19.1.8 on September 10, 2026, fixing CVE-2026-85706 (CVSS 10.0), an unauthenticated path traversal in the repository commits API enabling arbitrary file reads on both Community and Enterprise Editions. CVE-2026-87719 (CVSS 9.9) is insecure deserialization in the EE GraphQL subscription serializer that can expose Advanced Search configurations and credentials, while CVE-2026-88765 (CVSS 8.5) allows authenticated RCE via crafted project exports. The update includes database migrations, so single-node deployments will experience downtime; GitLab.com is already patched.
