Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing

Mistral and Mozilla partnered to power Firefox's Smart Window AI browsing assistant in France and North America, with zero data retention.

Mozilla's Firefox Smart Window (beta) AI browsing assistant is now powered by Mistral models for users in France and North America, with the UK and Germany expected later this year. Conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default, and Mistral agreed to zero data retention. Both companies frame the partnership as advancing open-source, privacy-first, and regionally fine-tuned AI, with models trained on regional languages, dialects, and cultural context.

Objective vs. Search: Decomposing What Makes a Good Tokenisernew

New tokeniser study shows search procedure, not optimisation objective, drives bits-per-byte performance across model sizes, vocabulary sizes, and multilingual settings.

The paper disentangles BPE and UnigramLM along two axes: optimisation objective (compression vs log-likelihood) and search procedure (bottom-up merging vs top-down pruning). Two new algorithms, BottomUpLL and TopDownComp, complete the 2x2 design space, and trained language models are evaluated on bits-per-byte and BLiMP across model sizes, vocabulary sizes, and English-only vs multilingual domains. Bottom-up tokenisers consistently achieve lower bits-per-byte in most settings, while BLiMP shows no consistent relationship with design choice.

Tables Decoded: DELTA for Structure, TARQA for Understanding

DELTA extracts tables into compact OTSL text and TARQA fine-tunes LLMs on it, beating VLM baselines on table QA.

DELTA separates physical structure recognition, logical structure recognition, and OCR to output tables in Optimised Table Structure Language (OTSL), a compact unified format encoding cell arrangements and content. It achieves TEDS-Structure scores comparable to state-of-the-art methods across FinTabNet, PubTabNet, and PubTables-1M, with robustness tested on a curated Hindi benchmark, TORQUE. TARQA, an LLM fine-tuned on OTSL sequences, gains 9.3 percentage points on WTQ TabQA and 9.2 points on FinTabNetQA TabVQA; code, models, and the benchmark are released on GitHub.

AI for everyone in every language

Google says its AI now spans 300+ languages reaching 7 billion people, unveiling Gemini 3.5 Transcribe, Live Translate, and TranslateGemma models.

Google announced its technologies now support more than 300 languages spoken by 7 billion people, 86% of the global population. Gemini 3.5 Live Translate powers real-time spoken translation across 70 languages and 2,000+ language pairs, while Gemini 3.5 Transcribe is its most precise speech-to-text model. Its Universal Speech Model was trained on 12 million hours of audio using cross-lingual transfer learning, and TranslateGemma is a family of lightweight open translation models covering 55 languages that run on-device. Open-data partnerships include WAXAL covering 27 Sub-Saharan African languages and Project Vaani with 30,000+ hours of speech across 109 languages.

How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?

A FOSS maintainer manually graded 102 F-Droid apps from the September 12, 2026 update batch, finding many show signs of LLM-generated code.

A student and FOSS app maintainer reviewed 102 apps pushed to F-Droid on September 12, 2026, assigning each a three-tier rating for likelihood of LLM-authored code (mostly AI >50%, hard to say/mostly human, no signs of AI). The heuristic relies on commit aesthetics, README and branding style, and the presence of agentic infrastructure like Claude Code or Codex, which automatically places an app in the 'mostly AI' tier. Example ratings include Amber (Nostr event signer) as mostly AI, and Aria for Misskey as showing no AI signs. The author stresses reliable detection of LLM-generated code from text alone is impossible, so ratings are approximate.

Training Specialist Models without Reasoning Trajectories for Domain Expert Distillation

Study shows specialists trained on question-answer pairs implicitly select latent reasoning trajectories, and tuning choices control the precision-generalization trade-off in distillation.

The work demonstrates that specialist optimization implicitly selects from a latent trajectory space when specialists are trained only on question-answer pairs without explicit reasoning supervision. Using student distillation as an agnostic probe across 27 specialist-student pairings, specialization-generalization profiles correlate exceptionally strongly. Explicitly controlling the specialist's distributional drift systematically shifts both teacher and distilled student along a controllable trade-off between domain precision and general-capability retention across chemistry, physics, and multilingual settings, even across divergent model families.

Drift-Constrained Optimization: Only Direction Matters in Fine-Tuning Instruct Models

Drift-Constrained Optimization reformulates fine-tuning as update-direction selection, letting Qwen3 models improve target tasks within a behavioral drift budget.

The paper specifies a behavioral drift budget before optimization and shows that update direction is the remaining degree of freedom, reformulating fine-tuning as a direction-selection problem. In a stringent QA-only setting where instruct models must still generate multi-step reasoning at inference, a coarse layer-selective probe reverses the failure of QA-only fine-tuning. Across Qwen3-8B and Qwen3-14B, these directions substantially improve scientific reasoning and multilingual translation, matching or outperforming dedicated translation systems over 100+ languages and giving stronger initialization for reinforcement learning.

Kraken: LLM-based Speech-to-Speech Translation via Low-bitrate VQ and Dual-path Source Conditioning

Kraken speech-to-speech translation model builds on Qwen3-8B with low-bitrate vector quantization and source-conditioned vocoding.

Kraken augments a pre-trained Qwen3-8B LLM with speech feature inputs and low-bitrate single-layer vector-quantized tokens trained to reconstruct SSL features. A separate token-to-waveform decoder, Autowave-X, is conditioned on source speech to improve non-linguistic transfer. Training used 150k hours of multilingual and multitask speech data. The model reportedly beats SeamlessM4T-Large v2 and Qwen2.5-Omni in translation quality and speaker/prosody transfer.

Cohere Releases North Small Translate: A 218B MoE Translation Model That Scores 83.6 on WMT26 Across 50 Languages

Cohere released North Small Translate, an open-weight 218B MoE (25B active) translation model scoring 83.6 on WMT26 across 50 languages.

Cohere and Cohere Labs released North Small Translate, a decoder-only sparse Mixture-of-Experts translation model with 218B total and 25B active parameters, 128 experts with 8 activated per token plus shared experts, and 16K-token input and output context. In Cohere's vendor-reported WMT26 evaluation, judged by GPT-5.6-Sol, it scores 83.6 averaged across 50 languages (84.36 in an agentic multi-pass mode), ahead of DeepL NextGen (81.37), Qwen 3.5 397B A17B (81.56), GLM 5.2 (76.50), and Google Translate (68.20). The model was built with RWS's Language Weaver team, post-trained specifically for translation, and reports 112 output tokens per second versus 81 for Gemma 4 31B, with long-document xCOMET-XL scores of 48.9 versus 21.3 for Google Translate. It is available free on Cohere's Chat V2 API until rate limits, with three self-hosting checkpoints including a 4-bit NVFP4 variant running on 1x B200 or 2x H100.

Researchers release IndicTriMix benchmarks and fine-tuned MuRIL and XLM-RoBERTa models for token-level language identification in tri-language code-mixed text.

The paper formulates token-level language identification in code-mixed text as a sequence labeling task and fine-tunes MuRIL and XLM-RoBERTa transformer models for Indian languages. It evaluates on Hindi, Gujarati, and Bengali configurations with manually annotated test sets and proposes two code-mixed generation approaches using parallel trilingual sentences. A public benchmark, annotated test sets, and fine-tuned models are released for reproducibility.
