Building the materials foundation for AI

Syensqo's CTO says AI pushes semiconductors and data centers to physical limits, driving advanced materials demand and AI-accelerated materials discovery.

MIT Technology Review's Business Lab podcast, produced in partnership with Syensqo, features CTO Mike Finelli discussing how AI workloads push semiconductors and data centers to physical limits in performance, thermal management, and reliability. Syensqo develops high-voltage data center materials, semiconductor sealing materials, and immersion cooling fluids, while using AI agents to digitally synthesize millions of molecular combinations and predict performance before lab testing. Finelli describes a reinforcing cycle where AI improves materials that in turn enable better AI infrastructure.

Fluid Notarization: Verifiable Evolution of Concurrently Edited Structured Documents

Fluid Notarization anchors delta-CRDT change graphs on blockchain, providing verifiable provenance for concurrently edited documents, demonstrated on collaborative electronic health records.

The paper introduces Fluid Notarization, a paradigm that notarizes the evolution of collaboratively edited structured documents rather than isolated snapshots. It builds on Melda, a JSON-native delta-CRDT representing changes as compact content-addressed deltas linked by causal dependencies, with blockchain notarization reduced to recording identifiers of evolution artifacts while synchronization, reconstruction, and conflict resolution remain off-chain. The architecture combines deterministic CRDT convergence with independently auditable proof-of-existence, provenance, and publication evidence, validated through a prototype based on collaboratively edited electronic health records.

The AI data center e-waste problem is huge — and getting bigger

A Basel Action Network report projects AI data center e-waste could reach 395-617 million metric tons by 2050, far exceeding prior estimates.

The nonprofit Basel Action Network (BAN) published a report arguing AI e-waste has been vastly underestimated because it counts all data center infrastructure, not just servers and GPUs. BAN projects 8.6-13.1 million metric tons of AI-related equipment retired annually, totaling 395-617 million metric tons between 2025 and 2050, based on roughly 70,000 tons per gigawatt and a projected 219GW of capacity by 2030. Less than a quarter of the 68.3 million tons of e-waste generated yearly worldwide is formally collected and recycled, with informal disposal exposing workers and children to toxins like lead and chromium.

Ukraine moves to crack down on scam call centers after corruption scandal

Ukraine's parliament passed legislation criminalizing fraudulent call centers with 7-12 year prison terms after a bribery scandal implicating prosecutors.

Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada passed legislation making electronic-communications fraud and organizing or working for fraudulent call centers separate crimes punishable by 7-12 years, awaiting President Zelensky's signature. The bill advanced after NABU alleged prosecutors took bribes since mid-2025 to shield scam call centers; five suspects were named and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, who denies wrongdoing, was dismissed by parliament and presidential decree. Ukrainian authorities previously reported 411 searches and 94 suspected call centers shut down in one week, including a Kyiv operation that stole over $500,000 from dozens of Americans.
