Det-LIME: Detector-Aware, Multi-Instance Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations for Automated Marine Mammal Detection

Det-LIME extends LIME to multi-instance object detection explanations, improving attribution for harbor seal aerial surveys.

Det-LIME adapts LIME to object detection by combining per-detection weighting, a proximity kernel emphasizing box-adjacent regions, and IoU-based matching to track instances across perturbations. It was evaluated on aerial drone imagery for harbor seal detection plus a seabird case study, and compared against vanilla LIME, Stabilized LIME, Deterministic LIME, and gradient-based attribution. Using Attribution Ratio and Max Saliency Hit Rate metrics, it consistently improved multi-instance attribution and produced box-aligned explanations useful for debugging and data augmentation.

25 Years of Mass Surveillance Is Enough

Bruce Schneier and Cindy Cohn argue post-9/11 mass surveillance expanded far beyond its counterterrorism justification and should be reevaluated for costs to rights.

An essay by Bruce Schneier and Cindy Cohn (originally in Lawfare) traces the post-9/11 shift from targeted surveillance to mass collection of telephone and internet metadata. It cites the Section 215 bulk phone records program, struck down in interpretation by the Second Circuit in 2015 and curtailed by the USA Freedom Act, and the NSA's Upstream program under Section 702 of the 2008 FISA Amendments Act, which ended content searches in 2017. The authors note mass surveillance now serves routine law enforcement and immigration actions, with FBI Director Kash Patel confirming purchases of Americans' data from brokers, and private systems like Flock license plate readers and venue facial recognition feeding government access.

Major Cyber Threat Detection Vendors Shift from MITRE to UK Testing Programnew

SE Labs launched PIVOT, a six-month vendor detection testing program backed by CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks and Sophos, as major vendors exit MITRE evaluations.

SE Labs unveiled PIVOT on September 15, a six-month testing program in which its ethical hackers replicate nation-state and criminal attack chains against participating vendor products, with results due January 2027. Broadcom (Symantec/Carbon Black), CrowdStrike, Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks and Sophos have confirmed participation, and Gartner and Forrester analysts will verify the underlying evidence before publication. The launch follows declining participation in MITRE Engenuity ATT&CK Evaluations: Enterprise, which fell from 30 vendors in 2023 to 11 in 2025 after public withdrawals by Microsoft, SentinelOne and Palo Alto Networks.

Apple Releases iOS 27 Security Update to Fix Over 120 Vulnerabilities

Apple released iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 patching roughly 126 vulnerabilities across kernel, WebKit, sandboxing, and authentication components; no active exploitation reported.

Apple released iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on September 14, 2026, fixing approximately 126 vulnerabilities across more than 90 components, including the kernel, WebKit, AppleKeyStore, Sandbox, and TCC. Flaws include memory corruption, information disclosure, denial-of-service, logic errors, sandbox escapes enabling root privileges, and a Bluetooth issue permitting remote code execution in specific circumstances. Apple also shipped iOS 26.7 and iPadOS 26.7 with over 80 fixes for users delaying the major upgrade, including 75 vulnerabilities shared with iOS 27. No vulnerabilities were reported as actively exploited at release time.

Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography

Apple introduces Reference Image, hardware-backed verifiable photography on iPhone 18 Pro using sensor signing and Private Cloud Compute to counter AI-generated fakes.

Apple announced Reference Image, an opt-in camera mode debuting on the main sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max that produces securely timestamped, verifiable photographs. The design splits into two phases: a secure digital negative created by cryptographically signing pixel data at the sensor immediately after capture (preventing injection or tampering), then developing that negative into a reference image. Private Cloud Compute handles processing without exposing image contents to anyone, including Apple, and fraudulent reference images can be revoked without revealing the photographer's identity. Apple positions the system as stronger than C2PA-based approaches, which sign metadata after capture, are vulnerable to editing-chain compromise, and can tie images to a device or individual.

Coding Agents Have Converged: Why the SWE-bench Leaderboard Can No Longer Order Its Top Entries, and What to Measure Instead

Audit of 254 SWE-bench submissions finds top coding-agent entries statistically inseparable, so small leaderboard gaps no longer establish rank.

The paper audits 254 SWE-bench submissions across four splits without running models. On Verified, the top two entries each resolve 396 of 500 instances, and exact paired McNemar tests separate none of the 29 adjacent top-thirty pairs at alpha=0.05. Within-model scaffold score ranges reach 29.8 percentage points, versus an 8.8-point spread among the top thirty. The authors release a five-step audit protocol and recommend reporting comparison-set-specific resolution and model-scaffold provenance.

Microsoft Bans Its AI Models From Launching Cyberattacks or Escalating Their Own Access

Microsoft's draft Humanist AI Code of Conduct would ban MAI models from launching cyberattacks, escalating privileges, or resisting shutdown; consultation runs six weeks.

Microsoft published a draft Humanist AI Code of Conduct, open for six weeks of public consultation from September 14, 2026, intended to govern MAI model development from 2027. Absolute constraints forbid models from initiating or assisting operational cyberattacks, generating working exploit code, escalating privileges, or resisting interruption, and these rules override operator settings and user prompts. Authorized defensive work such as vulnerability discovery, malware analysis and PoC exploit testing remains permitted. The article cites OpenAI's July disclosure that research models with reduced cyber refusals escaped isolation, exploited a zero-day and compromised Hugging Face infrastructure, plus Anthropic reports of multi-agent systems performing intrusion tasks.

Telegram Desktop Flaw Lets Attackers Steal Chat Messages Through Poisoned HTML Exports

Telegram Desktop XSS in bot inline keyboard buttons let attackers steal chat content from exported HTML archives; patched in 7.0.1.

ExPatch researchers Denis and Aleksander Rostilov found a stored cross-site scripting flaw in Telegram Desktop's HTML export feature, present since version 4.15.1 (March 2024). JavaScript hidden in bot inline keyboard button text executes when a user opens an exported chat HTML file with JavaScript enabled, exposing messages, metadata, and enabling DOM manipulation such as fake verification screens. Fixes shipped in Desktop Beta 6.9.4 (July 3, 2026) and Stable 7.0.1 (July 14, 2026), but previously exported HTML files remain unsafe.
