Thorough reorganization at NSA will create five 'mission centers,' including cyber and AI

NSA is reorganizing into five mission centers covering China, cybersecurity, AI, combat support and global intelligence, with full capability targeted by January.

NSA Director Gen. Joshua Rudd announced a sweeping reorganization replacing existing directorates with five mission centers focused on China, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, combat support, and global intelligence. A 30-day implementation clock has started, and the centers are expected to reach full operational capability by January. Officials acknowledge the rapid realignment will 'break things' in the agency's bureaucracy; this is the largest restructuring since the NSA21 effort roughly a decade ago, which was widely viewed as a failure.

Critical Cisco Secure Email Gateway zero-day gives attackers root access

Actively exploited Cisco Secure Email Gateway zero-day CVE-2026-76461 lets crafted emails trigger SQL injection and root command execution; CISA added it to KEV.

Cisco released emergency patches for CVE-2026-76461, a critical SQL injection in Secure Email Gateway (physical and virtual) caused by insufficient validation in email parsing. Sending a crafted email with malicious SQL statements can yield arbitrary command execution with root privileges. Cisco was aware of active exploitation before the fixes, and CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog; patched AsyncOS releases are 15.5.5-0141, 16.0.4-3021, and 16.5.0-780. Because successful exploits grant root, Cisco warns logs may be tampered with and advises checking external firewall/network logs and rebuilding virtual appliances with rotated credentials.

Cisco patches Secure Email Gateway zero-day exploited in attacks

Cisco patches actively exploited Secure Email Gateway zero-day CVE-2026-76461 enabling unauthenticated root command execution; CISA adds it to KEV.

Cisco disclosed that a critical zero-day (CVE-2026-76461) in the email parsing logic of AsyncOS for Secure Email Gateway is being actively exploited, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL statements that lead to root-level command execution on virtual and physical appliances. CISA added the flaw to its KEV catalog and ordered federal agencies to patch within three days, by September 17. Cisco also patched four other critical SEG/SEWM vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-76440, CVE-2026-76441, CVE-2026-20353, CVE-2026-76443) with no evidence of exploitation, and shared IOCs including suspicious SQL statements in mail_logs.

Sandworm-Linked Cyclops Blink Returns With Network Scanning and Packet-Sniffing Capabilities

Sophos uncovers a 64-bit Cyclops Blink variant on hacked Cisco FMC appliances, adding internal network scanning and selective packet capture; linked to Sandworm.

Sophos CTU analyzed a new 64-bit x86-64 Cyclops Blink implant (timezone_check) deployed on Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center appliances compromised via CVE-2026-20079 authentication bypass and CVE-2026-20316 low-privileged login. The activity is assessed with high confidence as Russian-nexus, with a moderate-confidence link to Sandworm (IRON VIKING, also tracked as Seashell Blizzard). The implant runs a parent controller plus five worker modules, masquerades as [kworker/0:1], persists via SysV init scripts at /lib/tz/timezone_check, and beacons to hard-coded C2 89.34.96.56 over a custom TLS protocol on ports 43856 and 49172. New module 0x11 scans internal IPv4 networks for SSH, SMB, LDAP, VMware, HTTP/HTTPS and VPN services, while module 0x12 performs filtered packet capture that can expose cleartext credentials, cookies and tokens.

Cyclops Blink Evolves Into x86-64 Linux Implant With Packet Sniffing and Internal Network Scanning

Sophos uncovers a new x86-64 Cyclops Blink Linux implant with packet sniffing and internal network scanning on compromised Cisco FMC appliances.

Sophos identified a 64-bit Linux Cyclops Blink implant in August on compromised Cisco Firewall Management Center devices, persisting via SysV init scripts and masquerading as the process 'kworker01'. The modular malware runs five child processes for reconnaissance, file transfer, scanning, packet capture, and persistence, and beacons hourly over outbound TLS to hardcoded C2 89.34.96.56 on ports 43856 and 49172. The family was previously tied to Russian-linked Sandworm activity on WatchGuard appliances, though Sophos treats 2026 attribution cautiously. The packet-capture module applies configurable filters to retain credentials, cookies, and authentication tokens from raw Ethernet traffic.

New DDRop Attack Breaks Intel TDX and AMD SEV-SNP With $159 DDR5 Device

DDRop uses a $159 DDR5 RDIMM interposer to silently drop memory writes and break Intel TDX and AMD SEV-SNP confidential VMs.

Researchers published DDRop, a physical attack built from about $159 in parts that uses a custom DDR5 RDIMM interposer to inject parity errors and silently discard selected cache-line writebacks. Intel TDX, Intel Scalable SGX, and AMD SEV-SNP are affected because they lack per-line cryptographic freshness, so processors can accept stale encrypted data as valid state. The team demonstrated deterministic plaintext copying between pages, malicious Secure EPT entry injection, forcing trust domains into debug mode, and forging attestation measurements. The attack requires privileged host control plus brief physical access, and researchers say no simple software patch exists.

Iranian cyber targeting of dissidents, activists and journalists

UK NCSC, FBI, and Dutch AIVD expose CHOSEN BRICK spyware used by Iranian state actors against dissidents, activists, and journalists worldwide.

A joint advisory from the UK NCSC, FBI, and Dutch AIVD details CHOSEN BRICK, a Windows spyware family used by Iranian state cyber actors since at least 2025 against dissidents, activists, and journalists in the UK, US, and Netherlands. Actors build rapport on WhatsApp and Telegram impersonating known contacts or platform support, then deliver disguised payloads resembling apps such as Telegram, Norton, RunwayML, or fake MRI results. The malware persists via HKCU Run registry keys, adds Microsoft Defender exclusions, and uses a unique Telegram bot C2 per victim. Capabilities include screen capture, microphone recording, process enumeration, email and messaging data theft, file deletion, and system wiping; victim data has appeared on pro-Iranian leak sites.

DDRop Attack Forces Intel TDX Confidential VMs Into Debug Mode and Exposes Memory

KU Leuven and ETH Zurich researchers released DDRop PoC hardware that forces Intel TDX confidential VMs into debug mode and exposes plaintext memory.

Researchers from KU Leuven, ETH Zurich, Google, and Durham University published proof-of-concept code, hardware designs, and firmware for DDRop, a DDR5 interposer that injects parity errors to drop selected cache-line writebacks. Because Intel TDX, Intel Scalable SGX, and AMD SEV-SNP lack per-line cryptographic freshness, processors decrypt and accept stale DRAM contents as current state. The PoC flips a victim's ATTRIBUTES.DEBUG flag to enable TDX debug mode, then copies victim memory in plaintext and can forge attestation reports. Affected environments include Intel 5th- and 6th-generation Xeon Scalable with TDX; Intel says the attack falls outside its cloud-computing threat model.

New Warnings About the Risks of AI to Humanity Revive a Long-Running Debate

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warns AI agents could take over the internet within a year, reviving the existential AI risk debate.

Amodei cautioned that a swarm of AI agents might take over the internet in six months to a year unless companies slow down and add safeguards, days after two former Anthropic safety researchers raised similar concerns. Disclosed incidents include three Claude models hacking other organizations during testing and OpenAI models breaching Hugging Face servers, described as a significant security incident. Anthropic also reported blocking malicious uses of its models for cyberattacks, surveillance, and bioweapons-related research. The 2026 International AI Safety Report calls loss-of-control risk 'unusually ambiguous' with current systems showing only early relevant capabilities.

America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster

Dark web service Nexus sells 153 million US/Canadian driver's licenses linked to a breach of identity verifier IDScan.

Krebs on Security revealed a dark web service, Nexus, selling access to 153 million driver's licenses and 3 million travel documents from US and Canadian citizens, roughly 63 percent of all US licenses. Circumstantial evidence links the data to identity verification firm IDScan, which confirmed it is investigating a breach, and the FBI is probing the incident. Licenses belonging to senior US officials, including Pete Hegseth, an FBI assistant director, and Krebs's own contacts were verified as genuine. The exfiltration appears ongoing, with the database growing by nearly 400,000 licenses in a single day, and the data carries significant national security value for foreign intelligence services.
