Clay Mathematics Institute says the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem has "apparently been settled"

Clay Mathematics Institute says the Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem appears settled amid accusations OpenAI misused a mathematician's leaked drafts.

The Clay Mathematics Institute stated the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of seven problems worth $1 million each, has 'apparently been settled' and the solution is under review. A dispute has erupted around the work: mathematician Tristan Buckmaster accuses OpenAI of redirecting resources to the problem after rumors of his research leaked, using his drafts in training data, and excluding co-author Levent Alpöge, who works at Anthropic. CMI also noted new technologies' increasing ability to accelerate mathematical research.

The latest AI doomsayer is China’s intelligence boss

China's State Security Minister Chen Yixin frames AI as a strategic battleground, urging technological sovereignty and new AI laws as CAC publishes safety framework 3.0.

Chen Yixin, China's minister for State Security, published an article in China Cyberspace Magazine calling AI the main battleground for global technological competition and warning it could be weaponized to exploit vulnerabilities, attack infrastructure, and steal secrets. He urged technological sovereignty, special AI laws, and Xi Jinping-aligned modernization of national security capabilities, citing risks from foreign AI products and user data leakage. The Cyberspace Administration of China followed with version 3.0 of its AI Safety Governance Framework, endorsing regulatory sandboxes and risk-controllable mechanisms. The stance implies continued exclusion of Nvidia and AMD GPUs from the Chinese market.

A brief history of AI executives calling for regulation

The Verge chronicles the history of AI executives, from Samuel Butler and Turing-era warnings to Altman and Musk, publicly calling for AI regulation.

The article traces recurring calls for AI regulation, from Samuel Butler's 1863 warnings and Alan Turing's 1951 lecture to Bill Joy's 2000 essay and Microsoft's 2018 facial recognition stance. Modern examples include Elon Musk's 2017 remarks to US governors, the 2023 Future of Life Institute pause letter, and Sam Altman's 2023 Senate testimony. It argues such appeals from industry leaders who profit from AI warrant skepticism.

Treasury’s Scott Bessent says no liability exemptions for AI labs

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged Congress to reject AI labs' requested liability exemptions, arguing creator liability is the best safety guarantee.

Testifying before the House Financial Services Committee, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the government should not grant frontier labs liability waivers, responding to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's slowdown essay. He cited Treasury's AI safety work since the release of Anthropic's Mythos model, whose cybersecurity risks prompted an April meeting, and coordination with banks and labs after the July Hugging Face cyberattack. Bessent also highlighted the Gold Eagle clearinghouse run with CISA and called for more US-built open-source models to counter China.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.
