APT36 Targets Indian Government and Defense Organizations With New Rust Malware Arsenalnew

Pakistan-linked APT36 deployed a Rust malware suite, including RUSTYSHADE and USB-spreading RUSTYMOVE, against Indian and Afghan government and defense targets.

Zscaler ThreatLabz tracks the August 2026 activity as Operation RapidRust, introducing the Rust-based RUSTYSHADE backdoor, the RUSTYMOVE removable-media propagation utility, and PSNATCH and BASHNATCH file stealers for Windows and Linux. RUSTYSHADE uses private GitHub repositories as C2 with AES-256-GCM-encrypted traffic, supporting shell commands, screenshots, webcam capture, and encrypted exfiltration, while PSNATCH collects Office documents, archives, images, and databases from user folders and drives D: through H:. Typosquat domains spoofing ThePrint and India Today staged payloads with Backblaze storage, and persistence used scheduled tasks impersonating OneDrive and Microsoft Edge updates.

Hackers publish thousands of drivers’ data after breaching Florida motor vehicle database

ShinyHunters published hundreds of thousands of records from Florida's DAVID vehicle database, including SSNs and passports, after an unpaid ransom demand.

The ShinyHunters group published hundreds of thousands of files from Florida's DAVID motor vehicle database on its leak site, saying the victim did not pay a ransom. Stolen records include vehicle ownership certificates with names, addresses, and VINs, plus a smaller number of Social Security numbers, non-US passports, and immigration documents. FLHSMV confirmed the breach, which followed theft of a police officer's credentials stored on a personal device. It comes the same month as the IDScan hack exposing over 150 million driver's license images.

GhostCode Phishing Kit Bypasses Microsoft 365 MFA to Hijack Accounts in 78 Seconds

eSentire identified GhostCode, a phishing kit abusing Microsoft 365 OAuth device-code sign-in to steal tokens and take over accounts in seconds.

eSentire analysts identified GhostCode in late August, a phishing kit that uses business contact-form messages and an NDA pretext to deliver a password-protected HTML attachment leading victims to a Microsoft device-code sign-in. Victims authenticate on legitimate Microsoft pages, letting the kit obtain a Primary Refresh Token in 32 seconds and register three devices in 78 seconds, with residential proxies matching the victim's location. The kit hides its redirect with encrypted addresses, junk data, and scanner-filtering challenges, and uses GHOSTnet-linked infrastructure during device enrolment. eSentire recommends blocking device-code authentication via Conditional Access, invalidating tokens, and reviewing newly enrolled devices.

Zero-Day Flaw in TP-Link Cameras Enables Eavesdropping

OPSWAT disclosed two zero-days in TP-Link Tapo C200 cameras: CVE-2026-15315 authentication replay bypass enabling surveillance and CVE-2026-15316 denial-of-service, both patched in firmware.

OPSWAT found two zero-days in the TP-Link Tapo C200 camera, widely used for baby/pet monitoring and SOHO security: CVE-2026-15315, an authentication bypass via replay granting administrative access without the password, and CVE-2026-15316, an unauthenticated denial-of-service that crashes the camera's HTTPS service via oversized encrypted credentials. Both were fixed in firmware version V5_1.4.6 released August 18. A third, still-unpatched zero-day rated critical could allow full camera compromise for use as a network foothold; details await an available fix.

Low-quality casino sites conceal highly dangerous threat actors

Infoblox reveals China-aligned APT groups hiding PeckBirdy malware C2 domains inside roughly 1.7 million Chinese-language illegal casino websites.

An Infoblox report says it tracks about 1.7 million Chinese-language casino sites enabling illegal gambling, some of which double as command-and-control infrastructure. China-aligned APT groups have hidden PeckBirdy framework C2 domains inside these low-quality casino sites since 2023, injecting scripts that display fake software update pages to deliver malware. Over 3 percent of Infoblox enterprise customers resolved at least one PeckBirdy C2 domain, and some sites rely on US cloud providers via 'infrastructure laundering.' Infoblox urges defenders not to dismiss casino-domain alerts as mere employee browsing violations.

240,000 Hit by Data Breach at Japan’s Digital Agency

Japan's Digital Agency says hackers exploited a VPN flaw and a maintenance account to steal ~246,000 records on 240,000 people.

Japan's Digital Agency disclosed a breach of its Government Solution Service (GSS) affecting roughly 240,000 individuals, discovered in late June. Attackers exploited a publicly disclosed vulnerability in a VPN product and used a maintenance and operations employee's account to access over 246,000 records, including names (~236,000), email addresses (~231,000), phone numbers (~94,000), and addresses (~1,000). The agency blocked external access to the affected server, suspended the account, and said no ID numbers or financial account data were compromised.
