Due to concerns about malicious applications, GPT2 will not be released (2019)

OpenAI's landmark 2019 GPT-2 post withheld the full 1.5B-parameter model over misuse concerns, releasing only a smaller variant and paper.

OpenAI announced GPT-2, a 1.5-billion-parameter transformer language model trained on 8 million web pages (40GB of text), achieving state-of-the-art zero-shot results including 70.70% on Winograd Schema and 63.24% on LAMBADA. Citing concerns about malicious applications such as scalable synthetic disinformation, OpenAI declined to release the trained model and instead published a smaller model and a technical paper as a 'responsible disclosure' experiment. The post, resurfaced on Hacker News in 2026, also documents failure modes like repetition and world-modeling errors, and discusses policy implications of controllable text generation.

Reward AI Releases OM-1: A Robot Policy Trained on Human Demonstrations Only, With No Teleoperation or On-Robot Data

Reward AI released OM-1, a general-purpose manipulation policy trained solely on human demonstrations from a sensorized glove, with no teleoperation or robot data.

Reward AI announced OM-1 (Omnibody Model 1), a general-purpose robot manipulation policy trained only on human demonstrations captured via Omnibody Hand, a 7-DoF wearable glove with tactile, proximity, and in-hand camera sensing. The system uses electromagnetic hand-pose tracking, cutting mean overshoot error to 9.5 mm versus 24.9 mm for visual-inertial at 67 cm/s (a 60% reduction), and reportedly learns brand-new tasks from under 30 minutes of human data. A separate RL-trained control layer runs on its own clock so policy inference latency never stalls motion, and the policy spans industrial arms, legged humanoids, and wheeled mobile manipulators. No weights, code, dataset, API, paper, or benchmark comparisons have been released, so claims are demonstration-backed only.

Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows

Code analysis of iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate frameworks shows Apple engineered Siri to deeply interoperate with third-party AI models like Claude and GPT-5.6.

Code sleuth 'pdfu' uncovered private frameworks in iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate revealing a 'Model Delegation' mechanism that lets Claude act as a Siri extension like the built-in ChatGPT extension. A second 'Inference Providing' protocol in Model Manager Services can fully replace Siri's server-side model with models such as GPT-5.6, which then receives Apple's Siri planner prompt and tool definitions to perform system actions and process personal data. The EU Digital Markets Act, which requires Apple to give third parties effective access to iOS features, may have shaped this approach. The entitlement is not yet open to third parties and Claude is not yet available in the macOS 27 Golden Gate RC.

CISA and NIST Release Technical Checklist for Safeguarding Identity Tokens From Theft and Misuse

CISA and NIST published NIST IR 8587, final guidance for protecting identity tokens from forgery, theft, replay, and signing-key compromise.

NIST Interagency Report 8587 (September 15, 2026) expands the IA-13 'Identity Providers and Authorization Servers' control from NIST SP 800-53 R5.1.1, guiding federal agencies and cloud providers on SSO, identity federation, and machine-to-machine authentication. It requires hardware-backed signing-key storage for moderate-impact systems, 90-day key rotation for high-impact systems, token lifetimes under one hour, and sender-constrained mechanisms such as mutual TLS and DPoP. The report cites incidents including forged SAML assertions that exposed over 60,000 emails from a federal agency. It also extends guidance to agentic AI systems using signed tokens and urges post-quantum cryptography migration planning.

OPEN-1B: A Fully Auditable Training Run

Open-1B releases a 1B-parameter model with bitwise-reproducible training, letting independent auditors verify every step of the run on commodity hardware.

The paper introduces a 'fully auditable' tier of model transparency: every training operation is reproducible with bitwise certainty on heterogeneous commodity hardware by imposing definite ordering on GPU kernel reductions, data batch ordering, and collective communication. Because replaying a full run on one machine is infeasible, a collective verification scheme lets many independent auditors certify individual steps covering the whole run. The authors release Open-1B with its full pretraining dataset, every intermediate checkpoint, the training codebase, and an audit harness. This rules out undisclosed data, injected biases, or backdoors that proof-of-learning or proof-of-training-data techniques cannot exclude.

Homebrew 7.0.0 closes eight security advisories, including a High sudo execution bug fixed in 6.0.12, and ships brew vulns vulnerability scanning.

Homebrew 7.0.0 closes eight security advisories rated one High, two Moderate, and five Low. The High flaw let unsigned cask removal metadata execute commands with sudo (fixed in 6.0.12), while the 7.0.0 Moderate closes a LaunchServices escape that let a malicious cask execute code outside the macOS install sandbox. The release ships brew vulns, which checks installed formulae against OSV.dev, extends build attestation verification to third-party tap bottles, and replaces Bubblewrap with Landlock sandboxing on Linux.

ScienceBuddy: Recursive-in-Recursive Self-Improvement for Interactive Scientific Agents

ScienceBuddy released: interactive scientific agent workspace coupling harness evolution with model reinforcement learning for continual self-improvement across four scientific task families.

ScienceBuddy is an interactive scientific research workspace that turns researcher requests, feedback, and execution evidence into tasks and evaluation rubrics for continual learning. Its recursive-in-recursive self-improvement paradigm couples harness evolution with the model fixed (inner recursion) and model reinforcement learning under the improved harness (outer recursion). Case studies span four scientific task families covering researcher interaction, harness refinement, and model learning. The system is released as a research product at science-buddy.io.

Privacy-Aligned Personalized Federated Learning with Compact Adaptation and Variable-Length Gaussian Communication

Paper releases a private client context once and confines adaptation to coefficients, matching full-model differential privacy with 2.67x less uplink on CIFAR-10.

The paper addresses the dimensionality misalignment between record-level differential privacy and low-dimensional client variation in personalized federated learning by releasing a private client context once and restricting repeated adaptation to a fixed coefficient space. A variable-length quantized Gaussian mechanism lets quantization error itself serve as the required privacy perturbation. On MNIST and CIFAR-10, the design matches or outperforms full-model private adaptation across privacy budgets and client heterogeneity while cutting protected uplink 2.67x at epsilon=16 on CIFAR-10.
