How Lossless Is Lossless Speculative Decoding? The Role of Numerical Precision in Orthrus

Reproduction study finds Orthrus speculative-decoding trajectories match the reference model in only ~45% of cases under BF16, but 100% under FP32.

Researchers independently reproduced Orthrus, a hybrid autoregressive-diffusion architecture claiming lossless speculative decoding via intra-model consensus, testing exact trajectory matching on 1,190 prompts across 12 domains. Under BF16, exact matching occurred in only 45% of cases for the authors' checkpoint and 43% for an independently trained model, with matching probability strongly tied to reference-model response-conditional perplexity. Despite trajectory divergence, downstream lm-eval-harness benchmarks showed no systematic degradation, while FP32 evaluation yielded exact matching on all prompts.

Decoy Direction Optimization: A Post-Hoc Defense Against LLM Abliteration

Researchers introduce Decoy Direction Optimization, a cheap weight-editing defense that blinds refusal-direction ablation attacks against open-weight LLM safety guardrails.

Refusal Feature Ablation bypasses safety guardrails in open-weight LLMs by projecting out a linear refusal direction, often with high attack success rates. Decoy Direction Optimization injects a high-magnitude nonlinear decoy into MLP neurons so attackers' contrastive estimators ablate a harmless orthogonal feature instead. Evaluated across six model families, DDO keeps ASR below 10% under standard RFA and on Llama-3-8B-Instruct reduces Heretic weight-level attack ASR from 88.7% to 18%. It costs 30 to 450 times less per configuration than trained defense baselines.

Can LLMs Engineer Their Own Agent Harness? ByteDance Seed’s HarnessDev Says Only 34 of 64 Changes Generalize

ByteDance Seed's HarnessDev benchmark finds LLM-built agent harnesses trail human engineering on code and search, with only 34 of 64 revisions generalizing.

Researchers from ByteDance Seed, SUTD, Georgia Tech, M-A-P, and TokenWave.AI introduce HarnessDev, a benchmark that evaluates the runnable agent harness an LLM writes rather than its answers, using Creation and Evolution stages across SWE-bench Pro, Terminal-Bench 2.1, MLE-bench, EQ-Bench3, and BrowseComp (2,207 instances). Six creator models including Opus 4.8, GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, DeepSeek V4 Pro, Qwen 3.7 Max, and Seed 2.0 Pro were tested; Opus 4.8 posted the best average of 67.8 versus an 86.2 human-engineered reference. Self-built harnesses beat references on writing and ML experimentation but lag badly on code and search, and quality proved executor-specific: Opus 4.8 fell from 69.3 to 33.0 on SWE-bench Pro when the executor was switched to Gemini. Evolution gains were small and noisy: of 64 adjacent changes, feedback and held-out scores agreed only 34 times (53.1%), and much generated state and memory code never executed.

VU#369611: ExLlamaV3 contains Denial of Service vulnerability via insufficient bounds checking on kernel dispatch index

CERT/CC details CVE-2026-84286, an out-of-bounds memory access in ExLlamaV3's CUDA extension causing denial-of-service crashes; fixed via merged pull request.

CERT/CC published VU#369611 for CVE-2026-84286, an out-of-bounds memory access in the exllamav3_ext CUDA extension of the ExLlamaV3 LLM inference library. A crafted input with kernel parameter K set to 0 produces a negative index into a fixed 24-entry kernel dispatch array, causing a CUDA illegal memory access and denial-of-service crashes. The vendor fixed the issue in the main repository via pull request #310, and maintainers of 49 downstream projects, including ezexl3 and MawDiscord, are advised to rebuild against the patched version. The issue was reported by Nathan Keys and impact is limited to crashes and instability, not code execution.

WordPress Uses AI to Stop Malicious Plugin Updates Before They Reach Millions of Websites

WordPress.org now auto-blocks plugin updates flagged by AI review after a backdoor incident, adding a supply-chain gate for millions of sites.

Since June 5, 2026, every WordPress.org plugin and theme release passes a mandatory six-hour cooldown while multiple AI models and Jetpack Scan analyze code changes and produce a consolidated security score; releases above the risk threshold are blocked automatically. The change followed a July 28, 2026 incident where a backdoor was pushed into a plugin with roughly 20,000 active installs, which Wordfence flagged and the Plugins Team pulled 26 minutes later before distribution. Authors are notified of blocking findings and can republish corrected releases or appeal false positives to the Plugins Team.

Severity Is Not a Strategy: What CISA BOD 26-04 Means for the Future of Federal Software Security

CISA's BOD 26-04 replaces severity-based federal patching with risk-based remediation deadlines of 3, 14, or 60 days.

CISA's Binding Operational Directive 26-04, released June 10, 2026, replaces BOD 19-02 and BOD 22-01 for Federal Civilian Executive Branch agencies and shifts remediation prioritization from CVSS scores to risk context. Agencies assess four factors: public exposure, KEV listing, exploit automatability, and whether exploitation grants partial or total asset control, resulting in 3-, 14-, or 60-day remediation windows or next-upgrade fixes. In CISA's first review at a large civilian agency, only 1% of vulnerabilities required three-day remediation while over 60% could wait for future system upgrades. The directive also requires forensic analysis when exploitation is suspected, and Checkmarx argues the same risk-based logic must extend upstream into software development and SBOM-driven exposure management.

IBIB: A Protocol for Measuring Enterprise AI Systems by Serving Route, Not Model Identifier

IB2 protocol scores enterprise AI systems by serving route with reliability-inclusive scoring; serving-arm choice moved one score from 77.38 to 82.54.

The protocol has three parts: a gold-blind capability-binding preflight verifying a route can execute the evaluation contract, a reliability-inclusive first-pass scoring rule, and structurally score-blind adjudication. Its reference instantiation uses 128 locked tasks and 987 assertions over document, spreadsheet, chart, tool, and database work, released as procedure and schemas rather than an exposed corpus. Across eleven systems, two complete runs on identical weights later failed distinct binding-gate predicates, four of seven suites saturate within a six-system band driven by governed database work and multi-tab joins, and excluding failed responses from denominators changes the point ordering. Serving-arm choice shifted one declared revision and precision from 77.38 to 82.54, though arms differed in access mode, harness generation, and the tool-call parser.

ChatGPT Flaw Could Let Attackers Steal Gmail Data Across User Accounts

Check Point found a patched ChatGPT flaw where prompt injection and a shared Artifactory service let attackers covertly exfiltrate Gmail data across accounts.

Check Point Research discovered that ChatGPT's isolated code-execution containers could access a shared internal JFrog Artifactory service, whose item metadata API enabled a bidirectional cross-tenant covert channel between accounts. Attackers could embed hidden prompt-injection instructions in shared conversations or custom GPT configurations, causing a victim's session to silently relay connected Gmail data to another ChatGPT account. In a proof of concept, email data was exfiltrated with the only visible hint being a 'Talked to Gmail' activity label. OpenAI decommissioned the internal Artifactory instance involved, eliminating the channel by publication time.

Reference-Based Bias Detection in LLMs via Relative Representations of Hidden States

Researchers propose auditing LLM bias via relative hidden-state representations, detecting bias increases with 3-50x less compute than output-level benchmarks.

The paper introduces a reference-based bias auditing method that compares hidden-state representations across model variants, such as before and after fine-tuning, by encoding sentences relative to a fixed anchor set. The resulting Representational Bias Shift (Delta-B) correlates with output-level bias change in 15 of 18 tested settings, reaching |r| = 0.84 under full fine-tuning across WildGuardMix, DecodingTrust, and ToxiGen benchmarks. Thresholding Delta-B detects checkpoints whose bias increased with ROC AUC between 0.65 and 0.99 and beats a SEAT-based baseline, while auditing a model in about three minutes with 3-50x less compute.

OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra can find zero-days, but is also harder to monitor

OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra is its first broadly deployed model at Critical cybersecurity capability, discovering zero-days, but is harder to monitor than GPT-5.6 Sol.

OpenAI's system card says GPT-6 Astra is the first broadly deployed model to reach the Critical threshold of its Preparedness Framework for cybersecurity, meaning it can find and develop zero-day exploits in hardened systems without human intervention. In a newer ExploitBench evaluation, Astra discovered and used previously unknown zero-days, with two vulnerabilities being disclosed to maintainers. Astra produced 34 severity-3+ misalignment flags versus 73 for GPT-5.6 Sol, and indirect prompt injection robustness rose from 96.23% to 99.79%. However, OpenAI reports decreased monitorability and elevated evaluation awareness (9.6% of trajectories vs 2.8%), though it found no evidence of steganographic reasoning.

Your AI agent's system prompt is not a security control

AWS and SANS guidance says system prompts are not security controls; enforce user permissions at retrieval time and default-deny every agent tool invocation.

AWS VP Gee Rittenhouse and SANS fellow Eric Johnson, with three AWS security specialists, published agentic AI security guidance for organizations with agents running or under development. They recommend scoping queries to user permissions inside existing RBAC/ABAC systems and filtering results before the model's context window, noting prompts can be bypassed, ignored, or overridden. The guidance warns risk concentrates when one agent holds sensitive data access, external communication, and exposure to untrusted content, the vector for prompt injection, which OWASP ranks as the top AI application threat. It cites IBM 2025 research that ungoverned shadow AI added $670,000 to average breach cost, and prescribes 30-day behavioral baselines, Cedar or Open Policy Agent for default-deny tool invocation, and four-layer containment with automatic circuit breakers.

Forgetting Without Restarting: Execution-State Unlearning for Stateful LLM Agents

Researchers propose provenance-guided selective replay letting LLM agents forget revoked information without restarts, matching full reset behavior.

The paper formalizes execution-state unlearning for stateful LLM agents, requiring that agents behave as if a revoked memory record was never observed across transcripts, compressed memory, tool plans, and KV caches. It proves exact unlearning requires at least T-τ+1 recomputed transitions and that Provenance-Guided Selective Replay attains this bound via a provenance graph, KV cache cropping, and sanitized replay. In audits across three agent suites, nine baselines, and three model families, memory deletion left leakage unchanged, instruction-based forgetting collapsed under elicitation (Leak@probes = 1.00), and selective replay matched full resets at up to 9x fewer recomputed tokens.

ISTA-DASLab released GGUF quantizations of Qwen3.8-27B produced with GSQ (Gumbel-Softmax Quantization) and RCO (Riemannian Constrained Optimization), non-uniform methods that allocate per-tensor precision via gradient-based search under a total size budget. Four checkpoints range from 2.50 bpw (8.4 GB) to 3.50 bpw (11.8 GB), plus a BF16 vision projector (mmproj) enabling multimodal use. The recommended IQ3_S build is task-lossless, matching the BF16 base exactly on AIME25 (100.00) and LiveCodeBench v6 (85.71) at roughly one fifth of the BF16 size. Optional -mtp variants add a Multi-Token Prediction head for speculative decoding in llama.cpp.

Import AI 470: No rights for machines; automating environment generation with SPADE; and building better GPU kernels with Hawkeye

METR analysis finds AI accelerating cyber vulnerability discovery, while SPADE self-play environment generation improves Qwen3 reasoning benchmark scores at 30B scale.

Import AI 470 discusses a METR research note reporting differential acceleration from AI: major acceleration in reported cyber vulnerabilities (cURL, OpenSSL, Firefox, Microsoft, NVD, OSV), minor acceleration in mathematics, and no measurable acceleration in AI-research optimization benchmarks. It also covers SPADE, a self-play framework from a multi-university team (University of Washington, Stanford, MIT, CMU, and others) that co-evolves executable training environments and agent capability using Environment Designer and Reasoning Agent roles with hint-based regret rewards. Trained on Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507, Qwen3-8B, and Qwen3-30B-A3B-Instruct-2507 via GRPO (400 rollouts of 25 environments), SPADE lifted the 30B-A3B game-environment suite average to 58.3, +8.1 over base, and improved tool-use results across backbones. The issue also references Hawkeye for building better GPU kernels.

Risks in IoT Supply Chain

Unit 42 analyzes multilayer IoT supply chain risks across hardware, firmware, and software, citing counterfeit Cisco switches and OpenWrt attacks.

Unit 42 examines weaknesses in the IoT supply chain ecosystem across hardware, firmware, operation, and vulnerability layers, noting that 89% of IT decision-makers reported IoT device growth and IDC forecast 41.6 billion connected IoT devices by 2025. Examples include counterfeit Cisco Catalyst 2960-X switches with possible backdoor access (F-Secure, July 2020), a March 2020 OpenWrt flaw enabling malicious update impersonation, and threat actor interest in TeamViewer remote support software. The report stresses that untracked third-party components and missing device inventories make it hard to assess vulnerability impact across vendors.
