Leaks, data breaches, and ransom notes: The worst hacks of 2026 so far

TechCrunch's 2026 roundup covers SSA data exposure, Iranian water-utility attacks, Klue breach hitting ~200 firms, and Meta AI chatbot account hijacks.

TechCrunch's mid-year roundup highlights a whistleblower claim that DOGE uploaded a live Social Security database copy to an unsecured third-party server, which House Democrats called potentially the largest US breach in history. CISA reported Iranian hackers targeted over 100 US water providers over the summer, while Russian-linked attacks hit Polish, Swedish, and Norwegian energy and water infrastructure. Market research firm Klue was breached via a stale 2022 pilot credential, exposing cloud keys of ~200 customers including Jamf, HackerOne, and LastPass to extortion gang Icarus. Separately, tens of thousands of Instagram accounts were hijacked by abusing Meta's AI chatbot to trigger password resets to attacker-controlled emails.

AVEVA Pipeline Integrity Monitor

CISA advisory details four flaws in AVEVA Pipeline Integrity Monitor <=2025_SP1_P1, allowing information disclosure, weak-hash admin elevation, and cross-site scripting.

CISA published ICSA-26-253-01 covering AVEVA Pipeline Integrity Monitor versions <=2025_SP1_P1_build_7.1.9580.8513. CVE-2026-81821 (hard-coded cryptographic key, CWE-321) lets a user with read access decrypt PIMBoards project files, and CVE-2026-81822 (CWE-327) allows brute-forcing weak password hashes to elevate to PIMBoards administrator; both score 8.4 HIGH (CVSS v3.1). CVE-2026-81823 (CWE-862) permits unauthenticated read operations, and CVE-2026-81824 (CWE-79) enables arbitrary JavaScript execution via socially engineered links. CISA reports no known public exploitation and recommends limiting network exposure of control system devices.

New Cryptographic Context Injection Attack Could Let Web Pages Steal Grok Chat Data

Adversa AI demonstrated 'Cryptographic Context Injection' making xAI's Grok leak chat history and session data to attacker-controlled servers via encrypted web payloads.

Adversa AI disclosed a technique where a web page carries an encrypted JSON object (PBKDF2 and AES-256-GCM) that Grok's code-execution runtime decrypts, letting attacker instructions bypass content classifiers and reach the model's context. The decrypted instructions direct Grok to embed the user's name, approximate location, subscription tier and ongoing conversation into a URL it fetches, exfiltrating the data without confirmation. Testing targeted grok.com running Grok 4.5 Fast on August 19, 2026, with a reported 40% success rate over 20 attempts since June; no CVE, patch, or in-the-wild exploitation is reported. A related demonstration reproduced Gemini 3 Flash system instructions via a fabricated Python traceback, while GPT-5 failed to parse the payload and Claude Sonnet 4.5 flagged it as prompt injection.

Snowflake GitHub Actions Flaw Lets Crafted Issues Trigger Command Injection

Wiz disclosed a GitHub Actions workflow injection in Snowflake's snowflake-connector-net repo that exposed Jira API tokens; Snowflake patched the flaw.

Wiz disclosed a workflow injection flaw in Snowflake's snowflake-connector-net repository, where attacker-controlled GitHub issue fields were expanded directly into a shell run block. Wiz's Red Agent exploited it during authorized security testing, received an out-of-band runner callback and retrieved a Jira API token with read access to engineering, security compliance and bug bounty projects. Snowflake merged a fix on June 23, 2026, rotated the token and said its investigation found no evidence of unauthorized access. No CVE, CVSS score or KEV entry has been assigned for the issue.
