Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS release patches security bugs across ten flavors

Canonical ships Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS point release bundling security fixes into fresh install media for desktop, server and nine other flavors.

Canonical released Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS, a point release for the Noble Numbat series that folds accumulated security corrections and high-severity bug fixes into new installation media. Nine flavors including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio and Edubuntu also moved to 24.04.5. Existing 22.04 LTS users receive the fixes through the automatic upgrade path at no cost. The release notes name no CVEs or bug IDs, and support timelines still count from the original 24.04 launch date (five years for Desktop/Server/Cloud/Core, three for flavors, extendable with Expanded Security Maintenance).

US Customs supervisor busted for stealing hardware from Homeland Security PCs

FBI arrested CBP supervisor Terry Liu for swapping CPUs, RAM and drives in 46 DHS computers and trading stolen parts via Newegg.

The FBI arrested and charged CBP supervisor Terry "Jiajia" Liu of Calais, Maine, with theft of government property after hidden cameras captured hardware swaps on midnight shifts. Investigators found 39 processors replaced, six memory modules swapped, and eight hard drives changed across 46 DHS computers at three Maine border facilities, with original Intel 14th-gen Raptor Lake Refresh chips downgraded to older, sometimes Pentium-class parts. Liu traded in the stolen Core i7 chips 16 times via Newegg's trade-in program over 14 months for roughly $200-210 each. Restoring the stolen hardware is estimated at $20,460, with full replacement around $105,800.

Scammers are getting smarter about where they target you

Malwarebytes data shows scammers tailor fraud by platform: 90% of toll scams arrive via email/SMS and MrBeast is now the most impersonated person.

Malwarebytes threat research analyzed global scam data from April 15 to July 14, 2026, across more than 20 scam types, finding each type favors a specific channel such as email, SMS, phone, or social media. Roughly nine in ten toll scams arrive by email or text, about half of IRS scams come by phone, and MrBeast is impersonated in about 30% of impersonation scams. The most impersonated brands are Google, Microsoft, Apple, Roblox, and Amazon, and Malwarebytes blocks around 500,000 phishing websites daily. Gaming scams on Roblox, Steam, Discord, and Minecraft increasingly carry losses of $1,000 or more, with 15-19% activity spikes in mid-2026.
