Zimperium's zLabs documented ToxicPanda 2.0, an Android banking trojan expanding from 16 targeted apps to 349 financial institutions across 16 countries, with 167 remote commands. It poses as a dropper, abuses VPN permissions to block Google Play Protect while installing a hidden payload, then uses the Accessibility Service for screen monitoring and overlay-based credential theft. It automates enabling Android Wireless Debugging and completes the pairing handshake to gain ADB shell access for privilege escalation, and overlays fake lock screens to steal device PINs. Previously unfinished commands are now operational and samples are served from AWS-hosted storage buckets.

Manic Android Malware Exfiltrates Data From Offline Phones via Nearby Infected Devices

ThreatFabric identified Manic, an Android banking malware and spyware targeting Ukrainian and European financial apps with novel offline Wi-Fi mesh data exfiltration via nearby infected devices.

ThreatFabric reported a new Android malware family called Manic combining banking fraud and surveillance capabilities, targeting 169 package IDs across Ukrainian banks, government and identity services, messaging apps, and Russian and European financial institutions. The malware uses phishing sites and dropper apps impersonating utilities for distribution and relies on accessibility services and notification permissions for keylogging, overlays, and remote control. It introduces a store-and-forward relay mechanism that stages encrypted data locally and relays it through nearby infected devices via Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth RFCOMM, or BLE GATT, supporting up to four hops when the primary device lacks internet access. Activity dates back to February 2026, with active development through late July.

The report also details Russia-nexus malware families CANFAIL and LONGSTREAM using AI-generated decoy code, the PROMPTSPY Android backdoor driving the UI through the Gemini API, APT27 using Gemini to build relay tooling, and the TeamPCP (UNC6780) supply chain compromise of LiteLLM and Trivy repositories that planted the SANDCLOCK credential stealer.

Google's Android Security Bulletin for September 2026 (patch levels 2026-09-01 and 2026-09-05) fixes numerous critical System remote code execution flaws, including CVE-2026-28604, CVE-2026-28618, CVE-2026-28639, CVE-2026-28662, CVE-2026-49882, CVE-2026-49884, CVE-2026-49919 and CVE-2026-49921, none requiring user interaction or additional privileges. It also addresses critical kernel issues including a TIPC RCE (CVE-2026-52993) and elevation-of-privilege flaws in NFC and protected KVM, plus a critical Qualcomm closed-source component flaw (CVE-2026-25289). Affected versions span Android 14 through 17; the 2026-09-05 patch level extends coverage to Android TV and chipset components, with high-severity fixes for Arm Mali, PowerVR, MediaTek, Unisoc and Qualcomm components.

FamousSparrow Exploits Public-Facing Exchange Servers to Deploy SparroWocky Backdoornew

ESET attributes a new SparroWocky backdoor to espionage group FamousSparrow, deployed via exploited internet-facing Exchange servers across Latin American governments.

ESET's Welivesecurity team reports FamousSparrow gained initial access by exploiting publicly reachable Microsoft Exchange servers, with roughly 90 percent of targets since mid-2025 in Latin America, including governments in Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela. The group's new modular C-language backdoor SparroWocky replaces SparrowDoor and uses a three-part loader: a legitimate executable, a malicious DLL side-loaded in memory, and an encrypted payload. It persists via Windows services or Registry Run keys, supports screenshots, file operations, TCP proxying, Beacon Object Files, TLS/RC4-encrypted C2, and anti-forensics such as call-stack spoofing. IOCs including loader SHA-1 hashes and C2 IP addresses were published.

Zimperium and zLabs analyzed RatHat, an Android banking malware linked to China-based actors that chains Accessibility abuse and Wireless Debugging to obtain a local ADB shell without a host computer. Masqueraded Go binaries in /data/local/tmp provide persistence and an FRP reverse tunnel, while a getevent-based collector maps touch coordinates to PIN pads and pattern locks using locateValues.json layouts. It targets banking, crypto, WeChat and Alipay apps through smishing, malicious ads, and HTML overlays, and serializes the accessibility tree for a generative AI assistant to automate on-screen actions. Layered anti-analysis includes malformed DEX, a padded manifest, and debugger, Frida, and emulator checks.

A Russian-speaking espionage actor tracked as GTG-20006 used AI agents to rewrite and recompile malware evading antivirus detection, targeting more than 20 organizations in Ukraine and Europe and stealing a drone vision system SDK. Alibaba's Qwen lab ran the largest distillation campaign, with over 151 million exchanges between May and July 2026 peaking near 3 million per day to train Qwen 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7. DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Xiaomi, and Zhipu also relayed customer or replayed traffic to Claude, including PLA-linked users analyzing CCTV footage and users with credentials tied to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
