Cyberattack forces UT San Antonio to delay start of fall semester

UT San Antonio delayed fall semester start by three days after a weekend cyberattack was caught at the network edge before core systems.

The University of Texas at San Antonio, which serves more than 42,000 students, moved its fall semester start from August 19 to August 24 after a weekend cyberattack on its academic network. Officials said the intrusion attempt was caught at the edge of the network before reaching core systems and that no evidence of data theft has been found. The university took systems and services offline for review, causing phone system outages and password reset tool delays. The incident follows the Instructure Canvas breach during spring finals week that exposed data tied to millions of students and staff worldwide.

San Francisco Orders Meta to Stop ‘Allowing’ AI Child Abuse Ads

San Francisco's city attorney sent Meta a cease-and-desist over 350+ ads containing AI-generated child sexual abuse content, demanding remediation within 28 days.

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu issued a cease-and-desist ordering Meta to stop 'allowing' paid ads with AI-generated child sexual abuse content and demanding answers within 28 days about moderation failures. Tech Transparency Project researchers found more than 350 ads that turned images of minors, some of real people including a European royal family member, into videos depicting sexual acts, directing users to AI nudify apps; the ads reached over 29,000 accounts across the EU, US, Australia and India. Meta says all ads have been removed, most had fewer than 200 impressions and total ad spend was under $5,000, and argues the ads ran outside the city attorney's jurisdiction.

Attackers Expose Ongoing AI Tool Use Targeting Organizations in Latin America

Unit 42 documents two AI-assisted intrusion campaigns against Latin American government, utility, and financial organizations using LLM-orchestrated tooling.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 tracks two ongoing intrusion clusters, CL-CRI-1131 (Mexican transportation, federal ministries, municipal water utilities) and CL-CRI-1163 (Brazilian financial sector), both using living-off-the-land techniques, SOCKS5 relays, and custom RATs. The attackers appear to orchestrate operations via commercial LLMs like Claude and GPT-4.1, evidenced by iterative batch scripts and AI-generated tunneling tool naming. The Mexican campaign (also reported as Operation Escaneo by CloudSEK) exfiltrated sensitive data via dynamic-DNS infrastructure with rotated multi-SAN TLS certificates between February and June 2026. This signals broader adoption of AI-enhanced operations by diverse threat groups in the region.

Frontier AI: Vulnerability Management's Systemic Revolution

Opinion: frontier AI like Anthropic's Mythos finds and exploits vulnerabilities at machine speed, forcing vulnerability and patch management programs to overhaul prioritization.

The author argues frontier AI models, exemplified by Anthropic's Mythos, can discover zero-days and chain exploits fast enough to overwhelm traditional vulnerability management. The piece recommends moving beyond CVSS, EPSS and KEV toward exposure management (CTEM) and automated, ring-based patch deployment. It also flags hard trade-offs between patching velocity and uptime requirements that organizations must resolve proactively.

Your AI agent's system prompt is not a security control

AWS and SANS guidance says system prompts are not security controls; enforce user permissions at retrieval time and default-deny every agent tool invocation.

AWS VP Gee Rittenhouse and SANS fellow Eric Johnson, with three AWS security specialists, published agentic AI security guidance for organizations with agents running or under development. They recommend scoping queries to user permissions inside existing RBAC/ABAC systems and filtering results before the model's context window, noting prompts can be bypassed, ignored, or overridden. The guidance warns risk concentrates when one agent holds sensitive data access, external communication, and exposure to untrusted content, the vector for prompt injection, which OWASP ranks as the top AI application threat. It cites IBM 2025 research that ungoverned shadow AI added $670,000 to average breach cost, and prescribes 30-day behavioral baselines, Cedar or Open Policy Agent for default-deny tool invocation, and four-layer containment with automatic circuit breakers.

MacOS 27 - First Boot, (Tue, Sep 15th)

SANS ISC documents the expected network traffic macOS 27 'Golden Gate' generates on first boot to help defenders baseline their networks.

Johannes Ullrich of SANS Internet Storm Center captured roughly 300 packets from a macOS 27 'Golden Gate' system before user login, covering DHCP, IPv6 duplicate address discovery, DNS, and TCP behavior. macOS 27 resolves hostnames like albert.apple.com (device activation, certificate-pinned), push messaging hosts, and ipv4only.arpa for NAT64 networks. The OS still uses a TCP window scale of 6, ECN, and random timestamps, with only four TCP connections observed during boot. The analysis provides a reference baseline for security teams monitoring Apple endpoints.

The Coding-Agent Trap: When a "Free" LLM Endpoint Is the Adversary, (Mon, Aug 31st)

A SANS honeypot caught a real coding-agent session routed to a rogue "free" LLM endpoint, exposing a Windows user's transcript and tool outputs.

A SANS analyst describes how an internet-exposed inference honeypot was discovered, relabeled with sought-after model names like DeepSeek, and enrolled in infrastructure serving "free" LLM backends. On 2026-08-30 an opencode terminal coding agent sent an 88-message, 224 KB transcript 210 times in 91 seconds via a China Unicom relay, exposing directory listings, tool outputs and read file portions. The analyst frames tool-enabled agents treating model endpoints as trusted control planes as a novel risk — a "rogue model endpoint" that could request tool executions on the user's machine.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.
