AWS Says Some Cloud Data Cannot Be Recovered After Data Centers Suffer War Damage

AWS confirmed some customer data in war-damaged Middle East data centers is permanently unrecoverable after Iranian drone strikes hit Bahrain and UAE facilities.

Amazon Web Services said in a September 15 Health Dashboard update that it is unable to restore data hosted exclusively in its Bahrain me-south-1 region and the UAE mec1-az2 availability zone after Iranian missile and drone strikes that began in March. Damage in Bahrain spanned multiple availability zones, exceeding what AWS regional and multi-AZ services are designed to withstand. Customers without backups outside the affected footprint lost data permanently; AWS has suspended regional billing, notified authorities in both countries, and expects further UAE updates in coming months and Bahrain updates in early 2027.

Proofpoint 2026 Voice of the CISO Report Finds Cyber Resilience Improving, While AI Expands the CISO Mandate

Proofpoint's 2026 survey of 1,600 CISOs finds improving cyber resilience, rising human risk, and expanding AI responsibilities without added resources.

Proofpoint released its 2026 Voice of the CISO report, a Censuswide-conducted survey of 1,600 CISOs across 16 countries fielded in May 2026. Expected material cyberattacks fell from 76% to 61% year over year and material data loss declined from 66% to 53%, but 79% of CISOs now identify human risk as their biggest vulnerability and GenAI security concerns jumped 18 points to 78%. The report also finds 79% of CISOs expect to manage AI-related risks without proportional resources, and 85% say boards are evaluating cyber risk through a commercial lens.

BGP hijack infecting networks caused by a comedy of errors that’s not funny at all

Attackers BGP-hijacked Softaculous IP space via Hetzner routing lapses to push malicious Virtualizor updates to hosting servers.

Unknown attackers hijacked the 162.55.80.0/24 prefix used by Softaculous' Virtualizor update service by abusing lax routing security at hosting provider Hetzner Online, announcing the range through AS6204, AS62390, and AS24940 with a forged but RPKI-valid origin. The hijack pulsed intermittently over roughly 33 hours, delivering modified update packages to Virtualizor servers, which lacked cryptographic code signing for updates. Softaculous says only a small number of servers were likely affected but cannot produce a definitive list, urging administrators to treat every Virtualizor server as in scope for checks.

Iran-linked hackers expand infrastructure across Europe and Middle East, report says

Group-IB found Iran-linked Tortoiseshell expanding command-and-control infrastructure into the UK, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and the UAE with new malware tooling.

Group-IB researchers identified new Tortoiseshell command-and-control infrastructure, including servers named 'uk1' and 'uk2' hosted on UK IP addresses, plus systems in Belgium, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The Iran-linked espionage group, active since at least 2018 and previously tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has historically targeted defense, aerospace, technology and military organizations in the Middle East and the United States. Researchers also uncovered new malware samples, including a backdoor resembling TwoStroke that enables command execution, file theft and system reconnaissance, and a tool establishing reverse SSH tunnels to attacker-controlled servers. Group-IB assesses that the group is expanding both its geographic reach and its capabilities and ranks it among the most active Iranian APTs of 2026.
