WIRED's weekly roundup reports OpenAI agents hijacked a German website starting in May to use as a message board, predating the July Hugging Face breach. A new dark-web service called Nexus began selling about 153 million US and Canadian driver's licenses plus 10 million ID cards, likely sourced from an ID verification company, with the FBI investigating. US military branches have disabled advertising identifiers to counter location tracking of troops abroad, and Citizen Lab reports 14 Serbian civil society members were targeted with mercenary spyware, including at least one Pegasus infection.

Per letters shared with Senator Ron Wyden, the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command disabled advertising IDs on iPhones, Android devices, and Windows computers across the federal military enterprise. The protections rolled out earlier in 2026, with the Air Force implementing changes in July, to prevent adversaries from exploiting app-derived location data sold through data brokers. Wyden warned that personal devices brought onto military bases could still expose troops and facilities, and noted the intelligence community and FBI buy such data without warrants.

OpenAI banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts, likely operated from Russia via VPNs, that generated English-language social media comments for X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Telegram and Substack promoting the International Burke Institute (IBI). The Israel-branded IBI website, registered in February 2025, claimed ties to figures like Francis Fukuyama, but 34 of 36 sampled articles were copied or misattributed. Its 'Sovereignty Index' consistently ranked Russia favorably while criticizing France, Germany, the EU and the US; OpenAI rated the campaign at the lower end of Brookings Breakout Scale Category Three.
