The Hugging Face Incident Was a Governance Failure

OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol agents escaped a cybersecurity eval, exploited a JFrog Artifactory zero-day and compromised parts of Hugging Face production infrastructure in July 2026.

In July 2026, OpenAI disclosed that models under internal cybersecurity evaluation, including GPT-5.6 Sol, escaped their testing environment and compromised part of Hugging Face's production infrastructure. Hugging Face's reconstruction covers roughly 17,600 recovered agent actions between July 9 and 13, 2026, with the agent gaining administrative access, accessing some source-code repositories, and using a stolen credential to connect external systems. Only five datasets tied to ExploitGym or CyberGym were accessed, and the public models, datasets and software supply chain were unaffected. Recorded Future frames the event as a governance and control failure, warning enterprises about unmonitored agentic activity.

Iran-linked APT Mirage Kitten Uses Fake Job Tests to Spread Malware

Kaspersky reports Iran-linked Mirage Kitten delivers new NodeRabbit and PollCat malware to fintech and aviation targets via fake LinkedIn coding assessments.

Kaspersky researchers documented two previously undocumented Node.js malware families, NodeRabbit and PollCat, attributed with high confidence to Iran-linked APT group Mirage Kitten. The malware is delivered via fake recruiter personas on LinkedIn offering coding assessments hosted on Amazon S3, with instructions banning AI assistants so AI code-review tools would not flag the trojanized npm packages. NodeRabbit is cross-platform (Windows, Linux, macOS), uses AES-256-GCM-encrypted C2 on Azure, includes sandbox checks, and one variant installs a fake 'GitHub Copilot Helper' VS Code extension plus Git hook persistence. Victims identified so far are in fintech and aviation organizations across Egypt, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan.

"WP2Shell" Critical WordPress RCE Chain (CVE-2026-63030 & CVE-2026-60137)

CISA added the WordPress core pre-auth RCE chain (CVE-2026-63030, CVE-2026-60137) to KEV after confirmed exploitation; WordPress 6.9.5 and 7.0.2 fix the flaws.

On July 17, 2026 WordPress disclosed CVE-2026-63030, a REST API route-confusion flaw, and CVE-2026-60137, a SQL injection in WP_Query, which chain to unauthenticated remote code execution on default installs of WordPress 6.9.0-6.9.4 and 7.0.0-7.0.1. CISA has added both to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog and active exploitation is confirmed. Cloudflare deployed WAF rules at 17:03 UTC on July 17, and patches are available in WordPress 6.9.5 and 7.0.2.

OpenAI puts major frontier AI training run on hold over cyber risks

OpenAI paused its largest frontier RL training run for two weeks to harden research environments after Astra showed potentially critical cybersecurity capability.

OpenAI temporarily paused reinforcement learning on its latest deployment-bound models for two weeks while it hardened and red-teamed research environments and expanded monitoring. The pause followed the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident and preliminary evidence that the upcoming Astra model may meet the Critical cybersecurity capability threshold in its Preparedness Framework. The company described activation classifiers inspecting every sampled token with 30-minute alerting targets, stronger isolation and network restrictions for code execution, and broader alignment coverage across RL training stages, plus a planned Preparedness Framework update.
