Threat Assessment: Ryuk Ransomware

Unit 42 assesses Ryuk ransomware amid a CISA/FBI/HHS alert on threats to U.S. healthcare, including the UHS attack that disrupted hospital operations.

A joint CISA, FBI, and HHS alert on October 28, 2020 warned of an imminent threat to U.S. healthcare from operators deploying Trickbot and Ryuk ransomware. Universal Health Services reported a Ryuk attack that disrupted all U.S. UHS sites for weeks, with similar incidents at hospitals in Oregon and New York. Ryuk typically arrives after Trickbot or BazaLoader infections delivered via malicious email, and operators enumerate networks with PowerShell and WMI before encryption. The Trickbot Anchor_DNS module performs DNS tunneling for C2, using connectivity checks to benign domains like ipinfo.io and checkip.amazonaws.com.

DPRK APTs: Ted backdoor and curlRAT target South Korean media and automotive sectors

Rapid7 uncovered a DPRK-linked Linux toolkit using a HAProxy-embedded ted backdoor, SSH keylogger, and curlRAT against South Korean media and automotive firms.

Rapid7 Labs identified a previously undocumented framework attributed with medium confidence to DPRK actors, targeting South Korean automotive and media organizations likely since early 2025. The toolkit embeds a backdoor compiled into HAProxy 2.8.12 using its filter API, plus trojanized crond, agetty, atd, sshd, and polkitd, an SSH keylogger storing credentials under /var/lib/sshd/, and a curl-based RAT with a watchdog thread. It enables remote command execution, malicious script injection into served webpages (a watering-hole loop), credential harvesting, and long-term surveillance. Hardcoded C2s are associated with APT37 via ThreatFox, and exposed groupware portals and mail servers align with Kimsuky tradecraft; the initial access vector and any CVE remain unconfirmed.

It sure looks like hackers breached a major ID card verification service

Suspected breach of ID verification firm IDScan exposed over 150 million US and Canadian driver's licenses and passports, sold via dark web site Nexus.

Independent journalist Brian Krebs reported that a dark web site called Nexus is selling searchable access to more than 150 million driver's licenses and passports belonging to people in the United States and Canada, adding roughly 500,000 documents daily from a 'major identity verification company.' Krebs and researcher Zach Edwards identified Louisiana-based identity verification service IDScan as the likely source; Krebs' own license and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's records appeared in the database. The FBI confirmed it is looking into the incident and IDScan says it is investigating; Nexus went offline shortly after the report went live.

Microsoft patches critical Entra ID vulnerability (CVE-2026-69836)

Microsoft patched critical Entra ID RCE CVE-2026-69836 (CVSS 10.0), fully mitigated server-side with no customer action; no in-the-wild exploitation confirmed.

Microsoft patched CVE-2026-69836, a critical (maximum CVSS 10.0) unauthenticated remote code execution flaw in Entra ID caused by deserialization of untrusted data over a network. Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory, is Microsoft's cloud identity service verifying logins and controlling access to Microsoft 365, Azure, and connected third-party apps. The flaw was discovered by Microsoft Principal Security Engineer Robert Fitzpatrick and fully mitigated server-side, requiring no customer action. Microsoft initially reported the bug as exploited, but later changed the status to 'no' and confirmed the vulnerability was not exploited in the wild.

Revolut gave customer IDs and financial data to a government impostor

Revolut handed customer IDs, selfies, and financial records to criminals using a legitimate government agency email domain.

Revolut acknowledged disclosing sensitive customer records after accepting fraudulent information requests sent from an email address on a legitimate government agency domain, describing it as an external impersonation scam rather than a system intrusion. The London-based fintech, which serves more than 80 million customers globally, says customer funds were not affected and only a 'very limited' number of customers were impacted. Disclosed data includes identity and contact information, copies of passports and driver's licenses, verification selfies, account statements, and transaction histories. Revolut blocked the sending address and notified the relevant agency, law enforcement, data protection authorities, and financial regulators.

Microsoft Patches Severe Entra ID Flaw (CVSS 10.0) Allowing Remote Code Execution

Microsoft patched CVE-2026-69836 (CVSS 10.0), a deserialization RCE in Entra ID; the flaw was fully mitigated service-side and was not exploited in the wild.

Microsoft disclosed CVE-2026-69836, a CVSS 10.0 remote code execution flaw in Entra ID caused by deserialization of untrusted data, and said the issue was fully mitigated on the service side with no customer action required. The security bulletin initially marked the flaw as exploited, but Microsoft corrected the status to not exploited in the wild on August 21, 2026. Microsoft credited principal security engineer Robert Fitzpatrick with the discovery. The article also recalls the Lazarus Group's exploitation of Windows WinSock AFD zero-day CVE-2026-68820 (CVSS 7.0) in the Operation Dream Job campaign.

CVE-2026-86206, CVE-2026-86207: N-able N-central Authentication Bypass (FIXED)

Rapid7 disclosed two chained N-able N-central flaws, CVE-2026-86206 and CVE-2026-86207, enabling unauthenticated admin account creation; patched in 2026.3 Hotfix 3.

Rapid7 researchers found CVE-2026-86206 (semicolon/Forwarded access-control bypass, CWE-791, CVSSv4 6.9) and CVE-2026-86207 (UserTwoFactorLogin authentication bypass, CWE-305, CVSSv4 7.7) in the latest N-able N-central. Chained, they let a remote unauthenticated attacker create an attacker-controlled System administrator account. The bugs stem from Envoy and Jetty disagreeing on the requested path and whether the client is local. N-able patched both in N-central 2026.3 Hotfix 3, following the earlier CVE-2026-18577 authentication bypass.

New Passkey Attacks Can Recover Synced Private Keys or Bypass Phishing

Three research teams showed passkey bypasses: WebAuthn assertion replay in Microsoft Entra ID, synced-passkey key recovery in Google Password Manager, and Windows Hello key reuse.

SpecterOps' Pass-the-Passkey research showed Windows stored past YubiKey signatures in cleartext and chained this with Microsoft Entra ID passkey validation weaknesses to impersonate privileged users despite phishing-resistant MFA; the Windows Event Logging Service issue is tracked as CVE-2026-34348 (CVSS 6.5) and fixed in July 2026 updates. Unit 42's Golden Pass-ta-key attack recovered the 32-byte Security Domain Secret protecting Google Password Manager synced passkeys from Chrome on Windows via pre-existing malware. Dirk-jan Mollema showed in-session malware can use a hardware-bound Windows Hello for Business key without a fresh PIN or biometric check. Microsoft applied Entra-side mitigations for the relay assertion issue; no real-world exploitation has been reported.
