Hackers Weaponize AI Safety Guardrails to Hide Malware From LLM-Powered Security Scanners

ESET says Russia-aligned actor UAC-0099 hid guardrail-triggering comments in VBScript to derail LLM-based malware scanners in Ukraine.

ESET researchers linked a technique named GuardBreaker to Russia-aligned threat actor UAC-0099 during an attack against an organization in Ukraine. The group embedded a safety-sensitive, weapon-related request in a VBScript comment so an LLM-powered analysis tool might interpret it as an instruction and refuse or truncate analysis before reaching the malicious code. The VBScript downloaded MATCHBOIL, a C#-based loader used by the group alongside MATCHWOK and DRAGSTARE. OWASP guidance recommends treating code comments and metadata as untrusted input, sanitizing it, and never treating an LLM refusal as a clean verdict.

Re: AI slops from Eve

Jeroen Roovers links a header-less LLM-generated advisory to a similar fake llama.cpp GGUF parser advisory from May 2026.

In the 'AI slops from Eve' oss-security thread, Jeroen Roovers asks whether a current LLM-generated message without a Date header comes from the same source as a May 15, 2026 posting titled 'Security Advisory: Multiple Vulnerabilities in llama.cpp GGUF Format Parsers'. Both fake advisories share the missing Date header trait. The exchange highlights growing LLM-generated noise on security mailing lists.

KlueセキュリティインシデントとRecorded Futureへの影響

Recorded Future disclosed a Klue incident that exposed some Salesforce business data, including contacts and emails, via a compromised OAuth token.

Recorded Future disclosed that unauthorized activity in marketing vendor Klue's integration layer, starting June 12, 2026 and contained the same day, affected some of its Salesforce data through a compromised OAuth token in the Salesforce-Klue integration. Impacted fields are limited to business data such as customer contact names, email addresses, and possibly business contract information. No evidence indicates Recorded Future's core platform, Intelligence Graph, internal databases, or customer platform data were accessed. The company revoked all relevant OAuth tokens, coordinated with Salesforce and law enforcement, and began reviewing all third-party Salesforce integrations.

The EU CRA's Real Question: What Shipped, and When Did You Know?

ActiveState argues the EU CRA's 24-hour ENISA exploit-notification duty, effective September 11, 2026, makes current SBOMs and provenance visibility a legal necessity.

An ActiveState essay warns that the EU Cyber Resilience Act's reporting obligations take effect on September 11, 2026, requiring manufacturers of products with digital elements sold into the EU to notify ENISA within 24 hours of learning a vulnerability is actively exploited, with a fuller report within 72 hours. The law's engineering requirements only apply from December 11, 2027, leaving a visibility-first runway, and Article 13 requires the SBOM to stay current unlike one-time artifacts generated under US Executive Order 14028. The author contrasts the 24-hour notification clock with an industry-average 55 days to remediate high or critical vulnerabilities and recommends automated SBOM regeneration or consuming pre-vetted, attested open source components.

Ransomware attackers are zeroing in on mid-market companies

Black Kite found mid-market firms were 73% of disclosed ransomware victims in North America and Europe from January 2023 to June 2026.

Black Kite analyzed 13,336 publicly disclosed ransomware and data-extortion incidents with known revenue between January 2023 and June 2026, finding mid-market companies (annual revenue $10M-$1B) accounted for 73% of victims in North America and Europe, consistently between 72% and 75%. Manufacturing was the most affected sector, followed by professional, scientific, and technical services and construction. Of more than 120,000 assessed mid-market organizations, 54.7% had at least one significant patch-management issue on a public-facing system, over a quarter had a known-exploited vulnerability, and nearly one-third had stealer-log credential findings.

Norway announces investigations into telecom Telenor’s work with Myanmar junta

Norwegian police opened crimes-against-humanity and sanctions investigations into Telenor's data handovers to Myanmar's junta, raiding its Oslo headquarters.

Norway's National Criminal Investigation Service is investigating Telenor for complicity in crimes against humanity for repeatedly handing over historical customer traffic data to Myanmar's military regime between the February 2021 coup and the March 2022 subsidiary sale. The Police Security Service is separately probing sanctions violations because the sale to M1 Group included sanctioned surveillance equipment transferred without foreign ministry permission. The subsequent resale passed historical call data of over 18 million people to junta-linked owners, and a class action on behalf of 1,200 people alleges the data enabled arrests, torture, and at least one execution.

Threat Brief: Ongoing Russia and Ukraine Cyber Activity

Ukrainian government sites were defaced via OctoberCMS CVE-2021-32648 while Microsoft-attributed actor DEV-0586 deployed destructive WhisperGate malware.

Unit 42 tracks January 2022 attacks against Ukrainian government websites that were defaced or made inaccessible, which Ukraine attributed to Russia. Attackers exploited CVE-2021-32648, an account takeover flaw in OctoberCMS prior to 1.0.472, by submitting a boolean true as the password reset code to bypass validation. Separately, WhisperGate malware, attributed by Microsoft to DEV-0586, disabled Windows Defender and corrupted files across multiple Ukrainian organizations, using a ransomware-appearing first stage and an HTTPS-beaconing second stage with LOLBINs and anti-analysis techniques.

LLM-Based Social Engineering Scams

OpenAI disrupted a Cambodia-based ChatGPT-powered scam network running romance, crypto-investment, gambling, and fake law-enforcement fraud campaigns.

OpenAI disrupted a social engineering network operating from Cambodia that used ChatGPT to run multiple scam types simultaneously. Operators built trust with fake dating personas before pitching fraudulent cryptocurrency and spot gold investments, posed as gambling platforms offering fake bonuses, or impersonated law enforcement agencies demanding fine payments. The network also generated images of forged documents including passports, legal notices, stock-purchase confirmations, and gambling platform interfaces.
