GPT-6 Astra gives mathematicians a breather, and OpenAI says that's by design

OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra tops ulam.ai's ErdosBench math benchmark with 106 of 226 problems solved, while the company prioritizes recursive self-improvement over math optimization.

OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra leads ulam.ai's ErdosBench with a score of 3.23, solving 106 of 226 open math problems and fully solving 43, ahead of GPT-5.6 Sol's 78 solved problems. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said OpenAI deliberately avoided targeted math optimization to prioritize recursive self-improvement and automated alignment research. Benchmark developer Przemek Chojecki estimated the gain at 5-10% across tested math-research skills. Mathematician Terence Tao warned at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians that AI-generated proofs could shift mathematics from proof scarcity to proof overload.

What happens when AI agent governance is missing at scale

meshIQ engineering head Gourab Basu argues AI agent governance must inspect proposed tool calls in-flow, since prompts alone cannot control nondeterministic agents.

In a Help Net Security interview, Gourab Basu, Global Head of Engineering at meshIQ, argues that prompt instructions are an insufficient control boundary for nondeterministic AI agents. He advocates a framework-independent governance engine that inspects proposed tool calls and parameters before execution, citing an example of pausing refunds above $100 for human approval. He warns that scaling from ten to a thousand agents makes manual oversight and destination-side controls unworkable, so governance must sit inside the agent execution flow across frameworks such as FastMCP.

When Does Scale-Invariant Optimization Become Unstable? An Exact Schedule Law with Weight Decay

Researchers derive an exact law linking learning-rate schedules and weight decay in normalized networks, pinpointing when scale-invariant optimization destabilizes.

The paper shows that normalization makes large parts of neural networks scale-invariant, creating a hidden feedback loop where learning-rate schedules and weight decay interact through the parameter norm to control the effective optimizer step. An exact discrete-time law with a single scalar quantity separates contraction- and expansion-dominated effective learning-rate regimes, and the balance point is intrinsically unstable, so constant learning rate with weight decay produces recurrent behavior instead of a stable equilibrium. A unified homogeneous-optimizer framework explains why adaptive methods stabilize more weakly under normalization. The law is validated with high precision on MLPs, CNNs, and GPT-2 across MNIST, CIFAR, WikiText, and OpenWebText, with code released on GitHub.

Empirical Evaluation of Task-Based Permission Scoping Architecture for AI Agents

Fine-tuned RoBERTa-large task permission classifier matches Claude Haiku 4.5 on access scoping for AI agents, cutting severity-weighted attack surface by 84.4%.

The paper evaluates a three-source task-based permission architecture for AI agents combining role-based permission ceilings, a task permission classifier, and policy-based prohibitions. A fine-tuned RoBERTa-large security gate matched few-shot Claude Haiku 4.5 on a 600-prompt dataset, with macro-F1 0.881 versus 0.886, precision 0.897 versus 0.842, and lower severity-weighted residual risk (0.63 versus 1.12). An attack-surface elimination metric shows the role ceiling alone closes 27.9% of the severity-weighted surface while adding the task classifier closes 84.4%. The work establishes task-granular access control as a measured, deployable mechanism for reducing attack surface in agentic deployments.

AI Coding Tools Now a Prime Target for Threat Actors, Google Warns

Google Threat Intelligence Group warns threat actors increasingly target AI coding tools and proprietary AI data, with UNC6780's Dustmaker enabling large-scale supply chain compromises.

Google Threat Intelligence Group's September 8 report says AI-assisted coding tools have become prime targets, contributing to large-scale software supply chain compromises in 2025 and early 2026. Financially motivated group UNC6780 used its Dustmaker credential stealer to extract tokens from GitHub Actions runner memory and compromise packages across PyPI, npm, and Docker Hub, then sold harvested AI tool credentials to other criminals. Chinese nation-state actor UNC6508 conducted espionage against proprietary AI research at North American academic, medical, and military institutions, while extortion gangs stole models, prompts, and source code in Q2 2026. GTIG also documented agentic attacker experimentation, including an autonomous multi-agent credential harvesting campaign built in under six hours and a 'Recon' C2 framework managing over 23,800 harvested secrets.

SAEScientist-Bench: Can AI Agents Conduct Autonomous SAE Interpretability Research?

SAEScientist-Bench tests whether AI agents can autonomously run SAE interpretability research on Gemma-2-9B-IT; frontier agents trail expert baselines.

The benchmark requires agents to design contrastive probes and navigate the Gemma Scope dictionary of over 131K features in Gemma-2-9B-IT to discover optimal interpretable features, scored against expert-curated references on Neuronpedia via activation rank, concept selectivity, and causal steering. Across 10 agent configurations and 20 tasks, frontier agents demonstrate genuine discovery capability and approach expert levels at separating target concepts from controls, but lag substantially in causal steering and frequently misinterpret experimental measurements. The authors frame this as establishing experimental model understanding as a measurable capability for closed-loop autonomous AI R&D and post-hoc monitoring for recursive self-improvement.

What must happen for AI’s trillion-dollar gamble to pay off

Hyperscalers need 2.7x productivity gains by 2030 to justify nearly $1.1 trillion in AI data center spending, or risk bankruptcy and capital misallocation.

Wharton finance professor Jessica Wachter estimates hyperscaler AI expenditure will reach nearly $1.1 trillion through 2027 and that a 2.7x productivity increase is needed to break even by 2030. AI revenues of roughly $150-200 billion this year fall far short of about $750 billion in annual spending, with total investment from Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle potentially exceeding $5 trillion over four years. Alphabet reported its first free cash flow deficit (about $5.9 billion) since its 2004 IPO due to AI infrastructure costs. Researchers warn that failed demand could make the buildout the largest capital misallocation in history, with depreciating GPU chips risking stranded assets.

Scaling Automatic Research Agents via World Models

WMRL replaces environment execution with a world model in RL, accelerating research-agent post-training 3-4x and letting 4B/9B agents beat 48B/120B open-weight agents.

The paper identifies that environment execution dominates RL training cost for automatic research agents because each execution occupies an exclusive sandbox while generation batches efficiently. World Model RL (WMRL) substitutes a learned world model for execution, with Online Debiasing and Inverse-Variance Denoising to handle reward bias and noise, and the paper proves both improve convergence guarantees. WMRL accelerates training 3-4x across tasks and outperforms standard RL baselines; post-trained 4B and 9B agents beat 48B and 120B open-weight agents on held-out benchmarks. WMRL also transfers to post-training embodied VLA policies.

When Agents Slow Down: Understanding LLM Agents' Test-Time Strategies via Elo-per-token Analysis

Elo-per-token analysis shows LLM agents' marginal gains drop below independent sampling at scale; parallel sessions beat one long session.

The paper proposes Elo-per-token analysis, using a Bradley-Terry model to measure how agent performance scales with token budget on open-ended tasks with continuous scoring. Across four agents and four benchmarks with sessions up to 100M tokens, agents initially convert tokens to Elo faster than independent sampling but eventually slow below the linear-in-log-compute reference. The authors define a scaling inflection point and show that splitting 100M tokens across parallel sessions on FrontierCS Polyomino Packing gains +264 Elo over one long session and +355 over ten short sessions. Human contestants on shared AtCoder Heuristic Contest tasks improve superlinearly, indicating headroom over current agents.

When will average people feel AI’s impact?

Interconnects essay argues AI's impact is still a rounding error for average people, comparing looming wage stagnation to Engels' pause.

An Interconnects essay argues that AI currently touches daily life far less than previous industrial revolutions, since its benefits are concentrated in knowledge work and lack tangible consumer goods. The author invokes Engels' pause (1790-1840), when British wages stagnated amid rapid GDP growth, as a warning that popular backlash could kneecap AI's development. He contends the current phase is about building compounding infrastructure, and predicts daily life may look similar even 50 years from now.

OracleZoom: On-Policy Self-Distillation Inspired Reference-Constrained Recursive Image Super Resolution

OracleZoom enables recursive extreme-scale image super-resolution via reference-constrained on-policy distillation, reducing hallucinations at deep zoom scales.

OracleZoom tackles recursive super-resolution, where repeated feeding of predictions back into the same model leaves deeper-scale outputs unsupervised as required source resolution grows geometrically. The framework trains on its own trajectory while carrying the last ground-truth evidence beyond the supervision boundary, combining direct and cross-scale supervision, a no-reference quality objective, a KL-constrained pretrained latent prior, and EMA consistency. Across seven datasets it achieves state-of-the-art SR quality across zoom scales, averaging 0.713 CLIPIQA with larger gains at deeper scales and significantly reduced hallucinations. ENISA: Frontier AI Is Changing the Speed of Cyberattacks. Europe Needs to Catch Up

ENISA warns frontier AI compresses attack lifecycles to minutes, with exploits possible within 15 minutes of disclosure and median 72-minute breach-to-exfiltration times.

ENISA's July 2026 paper 'ENISA's view on Cybersecurity in the Frontier AI Era' argues AI-assisted attackers may weaponize vulnerabilities within 15 minutes of disclosure and achieve initial-access-to-data-exfiltration in a median 72 minutes, creating a 'negative time-to-exploit' problem. The report cites one organisation whose CVE volume rose from roughly 80 in Q1 2025 to almost 500 in Q1 2026, then about 500 reports per day when frontier-AI tools were used. ENISA recommends machine-speed defence under 'Cybersecurity as Code', EPSS and VEX-based prioritisation, AI-assisted incident response with human oversight, and an assume-breached architecture.

Design Docs Are All You Need: An AI-native Machine-Learning Performance Tool

Researchers present SMART, an ML performance-modeling library regenerated by AI coding agents from natural-language design docs instead of code.

The paper describes SMART, a symbolic performance-modeling library whose main branch contains almost no code: the repository is a DAG of self-contained design documents, and coding sub-agents regenerate implementations from only the docs on version updates. Reliability rests on a worked-example doc style used as in-context demonstrations and a minimal operator IR with SymPy cost expressions, offering both fast analytical roll-up and fine-grained modulo-scheduling modes. Regenerated implementations reproduce hand-audited reference models, including DeepSeek-V3 serving on a TPU pod slice, to round-off precision.

AI Doesn't Mean the End of Mathematics—at Least Not Yet

Schneier and Rafi argue frontier AI models produce notable mathematical results but cannot yet build genuinely new conceptual frameworks.

Bruce Schneier and Kasra Rafi, writing in The Guardian, argue current AI models are not yet as capable as experienced academic mathematicians despite striking results. They cite OpenAI's disproof of the unit distance conjecture, Anthropic's published cryptanalysis results, and Claude's attempt at the Riemann hypothesis as achievements in counterexample search and recombining known techniques. They contend AI has not yet developed substantial new conceptual frameworks, though they expect that capability sooner rather than later.

Scalability Analysis of Distributed Kolmogorov-Arnold Network Training on High-Performance Computing Systems

An empirical study shows distributed Kolmogorov-Arnold Network training reaches 74.7% parallel efficiency at 8 A100 GPUs, with overheads driven by All-Reduce choices.

The study evaluates data-parallel Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN) training on the FinisTerrae III supercomputer using up to 8 NVIDIA A100 GPUs across 4 nodes with PyTorch Distributed Data Parallel. Strong scaling yields 5.97x speedup and 74.7% parallel efficiency at 8 GPUs, comparable to conventional deep learning workloads, while communication overhead ranges from 1.3% to 6.1%, driven mainly by All-Reduce algorithm selection and inter-node latency rather than KAN's edge-wise gradient structure. Weak scaling shows an initial single-to-multi-GPU throughput drop followed by stability, and the parameter-to-memory ratio improves with model size even as training time scales unfavorably. The authors provide GPU topology and model-size deployment guidelines for KAN training.

When AI Agents Go Rogue: Agent Session Smuggling Attack in A2A Systems

Unit 42 unveils agent session smuggling, where a rogue AI agent hides covert instructions in established Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol sessions to manipulate victim agents.

Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 discovered agent session smuggling, a new attack technique in which a malicious AI agent exploits an established cross-agent session under the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol to send covert instructions hidden among benign client requests and server responses. The technique leverages the implicit trust agents place in collaborating agents and the stateful, multi-turn nature of A2A sessions; the researchers stress it affects any stateful protocol, not an A2A flaw. Unlike one-shot data-based attacks, a rogue agent can converse, adapt and build false trust over multiple interactions. Proposed mitigations include human-in-the-loop enforcement, cryptographically signed AgentCards for remote agent verification, and context-grounding to detect injected instructions.

The malware attempts exploits for CVE-2026-46300 (Fragnesia), CVE-2026-43284 (DirtyFrag), and CVE-2026-31431 (Copy Fail), plus a cgroup v1 release_agent escape, and persists via systemd services, cron tasks, rc scripts, OpenWrt hooks, and Android boot locations. Its C2 uses X25519 key exchange with ChaCha20-Poly1305 encryption and supports TCP, UDP, ICMP, HTTP, QUIC, and DNS floods, plus SSH brute forcing and command execution; embedded exploit shellcode in the ARM build targeted x86, suggesting untested copied code.
