PAPERMILL Hackers Abuse Signed Notepad++ to Deploy VenomRAT in Tax Audit Attacks

PAPERMILL phishing campaign abuses a signed Notepad++ copy and tax-audit lures to deploy VenomRAT against targets in India.

JUMPSEC tracks PAPERMILL as an emerging cluster whose emails pass SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and deliver tax-audit themed disk images. The mounted image pairs a legitimately signed, renamed executable with a rogue libcurl.dll for DLL sideloading, then uses a Donut shellcode loader to run VenomRAT 6.0.3 in memory with hidden VNC, data-stealing, and file-grabbing capabilities. The loader includes anti-analysis checks and RunOnce persistence, and lures plus China-connected infrastructure overlap with the Silver Fox ecosystem, though attribution remains unconfirmed.

The VMs Powering Mobile Agents (Instinct, Claude Code)

A teardown reveals Claude Code runs in Firecracker microVMs with a Rust PID 1 and MITM'd egress, while Instinct rents E2B sandboxes with git-based memory.

The author inspects the virtual machines hosting cloud agents: Claude Code runs in a Firecracker microVM with a custom Rust init (process_api) as PID 1, a 324 MB Bun harness on a read-only disk, and 443-only MITM'd SSE egress to api.anthropic.com with host-rotated OAuth tokens and no inbound access. Instinct rents E2B sandbox-as-a-service Firecracker microVMs (Ubuntu 22.04, 2 vCPU, 1.9 GB RAM) where agent memory is a git repo of Markdown committed by the agent and pushed to S3 as a single bundle, using short-lived STS credentials. Both platforms rely on Firecracker, differing mainly in fleet operator and guest boot configuration.

CVE-2026-82441: Apache Storm Nimbus: Cross-Tenant Blob Deletion and Cluster Denial of Service via Unvalidated Topology Dependency Keys

Unvalidated topology dependency keys in Apache Storm Nimbus 3.0.0 enable cross-tenant blob deletion and cluster denial of service.

CVE-2026-82441 (severity: moderate) affects Apache Storm Nimbus (storm-server) versions 3.0.0 before 3.1.0. Topology submissions carry dependency_jars and dependency_artifacts blobstore key lists that Nimbus never validated on the submission path, yet acted on during cleanup of finished topologies. A malicious submitter could reference arbitrary blobstore keys, causing cross-tenant blob deletion and cluster-wide denial of service.

CVE-2026-79993: Apache ZooKeeper: Missing ACL check on deleteContainer opcode allows unauthorized deletion of any empty persistent/container znode

Critical ZooKeeper flaw lets any authenticated client delete arbitrary empty persistent or container znodes by bypassing ACL checks.

CVE-2026-79993 (critical severity) affects Apache ZooKeeper 3.9.0-3.9.5 and 3.8.0-3.8.6. The deleteContainer opcode (0x14/20) is processed without verifying the caller's ACL permissions, allowing any authenticated client to delete specific empty znodes in the data tree regardless of ACL restrictions on the znode or its parent. This can corrupt coordination state for dependent distributed systems like Kafka, HBase, or Solr clusters relying on ZooKeeper.

ToxicPanda 2.0 Gets a Major Upgrade, Expanding Attacks Across 16 Countries

Zimperium documents ToxicPanda 2.0, an Android banking trojan now targeting 349 financial institutions in 16 countries via ADB privilege escalation and overlay credential theft.

Zimperium's zLabs documented ToxicPanda 2.0, an Android banking trojan expanding from 16 targeted apps to 349 financial institutions across 16 countries, with 167 remote commands. It poses as a dropper, abuses VPN permissions to block Google Play Protect while installing a hidden payload, then uses the Accessibility Service for screen monitoring and overlay-based credential theft. It automates enabling Android Wireless Debugging and completes the pairing handshake to gain ADB shell access for privilege escalation, and overlays fake lock screens to steal device PINs. Previously unfinished commands are now operational and samples are served from AWS-hosted storage buckets.

GoldFactory Weaponizes Open-Source Vwork App Cloner in Gigabud Banking Malware Attacks

Group-IB says GoldFactory's Gigabud Android trojan uses Vwork, a weaponized Shelter fork, to clone banking apps into isolated Work Profiles and evade bank-side detection.

Group-IB's 'Hook for Gold' investigation found GoldFactory ships Vwork, a modified fork of the open-source Shelter app, alongside its Gigabud Android banking trojan, active since 2022. Vwork abuses Android Work Profile provisioning to clone banking apps into an isolated environment, weakening the link between detected malware signals and fraudulent transactions. Gigabud has targeted victims in Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond via fake airline, tax, and government apps requesting Accessibility and overlay permissions. In Indonesia, telemetry recorded about 1,469 compromised devices and roughly $960,939 in estimated losses between February and July 2026.

PaperCut NG/MF vulnerabilities exploited in zero-day attacks

PaperCut warns of active zero-day exploitation chaining CVE-2026-81578 and CVE-2026-82078 for pre-auth remote code execution in NG/MF print management.

PaperCut Software confirmed attackers are chaining two vulnerabilities in PaperCut NG and MF: CVE-2026-81578, an improper access control flaw in the web management interface allowing unauthenticated configuration changes, and CVE-2026-82078, unsafe dynamic class loading in database connection utilities enabling arbitrary Java bytecode execution. Huntress reproduced a pre-authentication remote configuration takeover and full RCE chain against PaperCut NG 25.0.11.75758 and observed limited exploitation at two customers, including post-exploitation whoami and ver commands. The vendor released Emergency Patch Release 2 with additional hardening and urged restricting Application Server web access to trusted IPs. In 2023, Clop and LockBit affiliates abused CVE-2023-27350 and CVE-2023-27351 in the same software.
