OpenWAM: An Open, Modular Exploration Towards Systematic World-Action Model Pretraining

OpenWAM releases an open modular stack for world-action model pretraining, plus OpenWAM-alpha trained on about 6,400 hours of egocentric and robot data.

OpenWAM is an open research stack that factorizes World-Action Model pretraining into composable infrastructure, study, and model components with unified training, inference, and evaluation. Controlled experiments distill three principles on knowledge inheritance, world-action synergy, and out-of-domain generalization gains from embodied co-training. The resulting OpenWAM-alpha, pretrained on roughly 6,400 hours of egocentric human and robot data, achieves top-tier results across eight simulation benchmarks and real-robot tests spanning single-arm, bimanual, and dexterous embodiments. The full stack, including infrastructure, evaluation protocols, pretrained models, and data recipes, is released openly.

Local gradient neural operator

Researchers propose LGNO, a lightweight interpretable neural operator using learnable local stencils, matching global-operator accuracy on PDE benchmarks with fewer parameters.

LGNO builds on nonlinear gradient discretization priors and uses multilayer perceptron convolutional layers to learn translation-invariant local kernels resembling discrete stencils. A zero consistent stencil factorization separates coefficient learning from field reconstruction, and network folding shares equivalent components to cut parameter counts for symmetric problems. Evaluations on linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic, and low- and high-dimensional PDE benchmarks show maintained accuracy, parameter efficiency, and rollout stability, with applicability to diffusion, flow, and quantum problems.

Nous Research Adds One-Click Local Model Setup to Hermes Desktop

Nous Research's Hermes Desktop now offers one-click local model setup that reads hardware, picks a fitting quantization, downloads weights, and configures llama.cpp automatically.

Hermes Desktop, the MIT-licensed build of the open-source Hermes Agent, now sets up local models in one click: it reads the machine's hardware, selects a model that fits, downloads weights, and configures the inference runtime. It manages a pinned llama.cpp build with CUDA, Metal, Vulkan, HIP, and CPU backends, and shows green/amber/red memory-fit verdicts per catalog model before download. Quantization floors at 4-bit, and recommended models guarantee at least a 64K context window protected by ordered RAM offload (expert weights first, never the attention cache). It runs on macOS 12+, Windows 10/11, and Linux with no account required for local models.

Studying Image Tokenizers as Visual Languages in Unified Multimodal Models

A controlled autoregressive testbed shows validation losses must be analyzed per task, and image tokenizer choice affects joint multimodal text modeling.

Researchers built a pure-autoregressive testbed to study image tokenizers as the 'visual language' of unified multimodal models, tracking task-specific validation losses during multimodal continual pretraining across text, image, text-to-image (T2I), and image-to-text (I2T) prediction. They found that losses exhibit distinct scaling behavior per task and rank tokenizers differently, and that I2T loss over a shared text vocabulary gives a more consistent loss–performance signal than T2I loss. Better reconstruction does not necessarily yield lower task-specific losses or stronger downstream performance, and tokenizer choice can affect text modeling under joint optimization. Case studies examine the discriminator, semantic supervision, and vocabulary size design axes.

Pelican-Sim 1.0: A General World Model Simulator for Embodied Intelligence

Pelican-Sim 1.0 predicts future observations from visual context and robot actions; four-step autoregressive rollouts yield 5.67x speedup and raise policy success from 70% to 93%.

Pelican-Sim 1.0 is a general world model simulator for embodied intelligence that predicts future observations from visual context and robot actions using a 28-dimensional unified action space valid across heterogeneous embodiments. Sparse mixture-of-experts layers reduce FVD by 6.530 versus the dense backbone, and causal adaptation with few-step distillation yields a four-step autoregressive simulator achieving a 5.67-fold speedup over the 35-step model. Trained on roughly one million real-world and simulated trajectories, PSNR improves over the strongest baselines by 4.636 on AgiBotWorld Beta, 2.080 on RoboMIND, and 10.343 on RoboTwin. Downstream on RoboTwin, adding 500 generated trajectories to 50 demonstrations per task raises policy success from 70% to 93%, and policy evaluation reaches a Pearson correlation of 0.994.

How Model Growth, Recursion, and Boundary Operators Influence Scaling Exponents

Researchers show model growth via looped transformers improves scaling exponents; a 7.4B architecture matches GPT-3 13B with roughly 20x less compute.

The paper shows that architectural interventions, contrary to conventional wisdom, can modify pre-training scaling exponents and yield exponential performance gains with compute. Looped transformers with increasing loop counts provide a model growth mechanism; a 7.4B model-growth architecture matches GPT-3 13B on CORE with roughly 20x less compute, with efficiency gains that increase with scale. A boundary operator that normalizes and injects an earlier block also improves compute efficiency, and in data-constrained multi-epoch settings increasing loops with scale is compute-optimal.

Augustinian BabyLM: What Ostensive Definition Can and Cannot Teach a Small Language Model

Study shows visually grounded token embeddings in a small masked LM persist through training and improve object-property knowledge, but escape standard BabyLM benchmarks.

The paper implements ostensive definition for a small DeBERTa masked language model trained on 10M words, seeding visually grounded tokens with embeddings derived from labeled image regions before training. Visual initialization leaves a persistent, seed-replicated advantage on object-property knowledge (COMPS) and a corpus-tailored Visual-Property Swap benchmark covering color, material, size, and shape, but has no effect on most BabyLM grammar benchmarks. Synthetic grounding of previously unseeded words causally transfers the advantage to exactly those words.

Groupoid-Based Internal State Representations for Reinforcement Learning with Local Symmetries

Groupoid-based RL discovers local, state-dependent symmetries during interaction, learning in a symmetry-reduced space and beating standard Q-learning efficiency.

The paper proposes a reinforcement learning framework using groupoids to capture local, state-dependent symmetries and dynamically discover equivalence structures during interaction. The agent maintains orbit representatives together with transporters that map raw states to canonical forms, enabling learning and decision-making in a symmetry-reduced space while preserving local distinctions. Empirical results show improved sample efficiency and convergence over standard Q-learning in dense and large-scale environments with strong partial symmetries.

ActionSplice: In-Flight Action Editing for Interactive World Models

ActionSplice enables in-flight action editing in chunk-autoregressive video world models via a lightweight corrector, avoiding rollback or waiting for the next chunk.

ActionSplice is an inference framework that formulates in-flight action editing for chunk-autoregressive video world models as Counterfactual State Transport (CST), where a lightweight corrector transports the interrupted backbone-native representation toward the matched state induced by the revised action. The world model and sampler remain frozen, and sampling resumes without replaying completed evaluations. Across minWM-Wan Action2V and HY-WM1.5, the retargeting variant CST-R reduces rollback-relative LPIPS by 61.5% and 75.9% versus direct condition swapping, while the temporal-splicing variant CST-T reduces suffix LPIPS by 56.1% and 77.5% with 2.73x and 1.69x pixel-ready speedups over waiting.

Does Your Agent's Memory Survive a Model Upgrade? A Controlled Study of Memory Portability

A controlled study finds agent memory portability varies sharply: fixed-schema knowledge graphs survive model swaps while compressed notes degrade.

The study compares preserving an agent's history as raw long context, RAG chunks, compressed natural-language notes, or fixed-schema knowledge graphs across model upgrades, using 48 synthetic histories and two open-weight sub-10B-parameter models. Fixed-schema KG accuracy changed by only +0.0004 ± 0.0020 after a writer swap, while compressed NOTES shifted asymmetrically by +9.91 or -13.28 percentage points depending on migration direction. Mixed 50/50 embedding migrations captured only 4.96 of an 11.90-point RAG re-embedding gain; 80% of the NOTES deficit came from information lost at construction, and 81% of the RAG deficit from retrieval failures. Store-only repair of NOTES failed to reach 90% recovery in all 48 cases, while retaining raw histories enabled recovery in 34 of 48 for one direction.

Another Blueprint In The Wall: How to Ask Frontier AI Like a Kid?

Six frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google DeepMind converge on one imagined successor architecture when asked under a school-audience framing.

Researchers ran ten independent sessions per model type across six frontier models using a three-stage prompt sequence progressing to a full ASCII backbone architecture. Under school-audience framing, responses repeatedly converged on a shared motif including persistent latent state, adaptive computation, memory, specialist routing, verification, and stopping control, while control runs without the framing produced heterogeneous responses. A GPT-5.6 Sol output closely overlapped an architecture independently sketched by GPT-6 Astra, raising questions about shared design priors or motif propagation between model families. The paper coins 'epistemic jailbreak' for the observed loss of provenance discipline as prompt specificity increases.

harshatheg/Qwen-2.5-1B-RLCD — new model trending #30 on Hugging Face

A community MLX inference engine evaluates constrained JSON schema fields in parallel on Apple Silicon, reporting 5.6-7.0x latency speedups with guaranteed schema validity.

The repository harshatheg/Qwen-2.5-1B-RLCD appeared at #30 on Hugging Face trending, but its content describes Parallel Constrained Decoding, an MLX-based inference engine for structured extraction and classification on Apple Silicon Macs. Benchmarked with mlx-community/Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct-4bit on an M4 Max, it reports 5.6x-7.0x latency reductions (e.g., 1,900 ms to 270 ms for a 28-field support triage task) with 100% syntactic validity and calibrated field-level probabilities. The engine prefills a single KV-cache, broadcasts it across all schema fields, and slices logits to valid candidate tokens for enum fields with up to 255 choices.

Can Edge-Deployable Vision-Language Models Identify Species?

Evaluation of 2-8B VLMs (Qwen3-VL, Gemma3) against BioCLIP on camera-trap species ID shows all models degrade sharply on field imagery.

The study tests whether edge-deployable 2-8B vision-language models carry genuine taxonomic knowledge, comparing Qwen3-VL 2B/4B/8B and Gemma3 4B against the 300M specialist BioCLIP on a 96-species task across clean iNaturalist photos and six LILA.science camera-trap collections. All models degrade 9.6-26.6 percentage points on field imagery, and BioCLIP outperforms every VLM by 33.2-59.2 points on an expanded 200-image sample, suggesting specialized data rather than scale drives the gap. Under open-set prompting, 5.9-9.6% of responses are syntactically valid but taxonomically nonexistent species names, with fabrication rankings replicating across evaluation sets.

Modality-Autoregressive World-Action Models

ModAR autoregressively denoises multiple future modalities (point tracks, DINO features, depth) before predicting actions, beating prior world-action models at all data scales.

ModAR is the first world-action model (WAM) to autoregressively denoise multiple future modalities before predicting actions, letting each prediction condition on previously generated modalities. Training from scratch shows WAMs benefit from predicting point tracks, DINO features, and depth maps, while future RGB adds no consistent benefit. ModAR's sequential generation outperforms existing WAM formulations with the highest average success rate at all evaluated data scales. It slightly beats video-model-initialized Flex-π (75% vs 72% success) using roughly 20x fewer training FLOPs and no pretraining, and wins on three real-world bimanual tasks.
