A misalignment of AI in mathematics

Fields Medalists including Terence Tao warn AI benchmark-chasing in mathematics is misaligned with scientific goals and threatens research culture.

Twenty-five Fields Medal-winning mathematicians, including Terence Tao, Peter Scholze, and Manjul Bhargava, published an essay arguing that AI companies' push to solve mathematical problems as benchmarks is severely misaligned with the goal of conceptual understanding. They warn that rushed AI solutions create attribution and plagiarism risks and bypass the human process of integrating results into the mathematical canon. The authors frame the issue as a broader alignment problem facing scientific and creative professions and call for urgent action by AI developers and society.

AI models' written reasoning steps correspond to distinct internal patterns, a new study finds

KAIST and Naver AI Lab researchers show LLM reasoning steps like extraction and computation map to distinct activation patterns, strongest in middle layers.

Researchers at KAIST and Naver AI Lab defined eight recurring reasoning operations, including extraction, decomposition, formula recall, deduction, and computation, and showed they correspond to separable activation patterns in Qwen2.5-7B, Qwen3-8B, and Gemma4-31B on math tasks, with GPT-5 labeling solution segments. The separation peaks in middle layers, holds even when a computation step produces a wrong answer, and goes beyond surface-level token choice. Findings replicated on Llama-3-8B, and classifiers trained on Qwen3-8B transferred to GPQA-Diamond and MATH-500. The authors note that using internal states for error detection or mid-generation steering remains future work.

Thought without systematicity? Evaluating reasoning models on rule induction tasks

Study finds reasoning models often fail on structurally equivalent variants of tasks they solve, suggesting their reasoning lacks systematicity.

The paper extends rule induction tasks from cognitive science using task isomorphisms such as recombination and substitution to test systematicity in reasoning models. Despite solving tasks correctly, models frequently fail on structurally equivalent variants of the same task. The authors conclude many model behaviors lack systematicity, making it difficult to establish cognitive abilities beyond the specific evaluation contexts.

Beneath the Surface of Chains-of-Thought: A Mechanistic Interpretation of Reasoning Operations in LLMs

Study shows LLM reasoning operations like planning and deduction are geometrically separable in hidden states, with separability peaking in middle layers.

Researchers investigate whether functional reasoning operations — problem formulation, goal decomposition, deduction — have corresponding geometric structure in LLM hidden representations. They find operations are separable in held-out representations with separability peaking in middle layers, ruling out lexical and positional confounds; token-wise operation alignment becomes more distributed across layers, and identical surface tokens are represented differently depending on their surrounding chunk. Attention-masking interventions show chunk-onset operation-aligned representations depend on preceding reasoning context; code is released on GitHub (naver-ai/beneath-cot).

Building Multilingual Bridges: Data Mixing as the Pillar of Generalization for In-Language Reasoning

Researchers train Tiny Aya L2-Thinker, a 3.35B model achieving over 93% in-language reasoning across 60 languages via multilingual data mixing.

The paper addresses L2 reasoning, where models reason consistently in the language of the user's prompt rather than defaulting to English. Through data-centric SFT optimization, the 3.35B Tiny Aya L2-Thinker reaches above 93% L2 reasoning rate across 60 languages on 6 benchmarks covering math, commonsense, instruction following, open-ended generation, and cultural reasoning. The authors find that generalization to held-out languages relies on broad language coverage, multilingual non-reasoning data, and a strong English reasoning backbone, without needing reasoning supervision in every target language. Model weights and multilingual reasoning data are released.

Building Multilingual Bridges: Data Mixing as the Pillar of Generalization for In-Language Reasoning

Tiny Aya L2-Thinker, a 3.35B model, achieves over 93 percent in-language reasoning across 60 languages via optimized multilingual data mixing; weights released.

The paper studies L2 reasoning, the ability to reason consistently in the language of the user's prompt, approached through SFT data composition and scheduling. Tiny Aya L2-Thinker (3.35B) achieves an in-language reasoning rate above 93 percent across 60 languages on six benchmarks spanning math, commonsense, instruction following, open-ended generation, and cultural reasoning. Findings show generalization to held-out languages comes from broader language coverage, multilingual non-reasoning data, and a strong English reasoning backbone, suggesting reasoning is language-agnostic and transferable without per-language supervision. Model weights and multilingual reasoning data are publicly released.

AI Doesn't Mean the End of Mathematics—at Least Not Yet

Schneier and Rafi argue frontier AI models produce notable mathematical results but cannot yet build genuinely new conceptual frameworks.

Bruce Schneier and Kasra Rafi, writing in The Guardian, argue current AI models are not yet as capable as experienced academic mathematicians despite striking results. They cite OpenAI's disproof of the unit distance conjecture, Anthropic's published cryptanalysis results, and Claude's attempt at the Riemann hypothesis as achievements in counterexample search and recombining known techniques. They contend AI has not yet developed substantial new conceptual frameworks, though they expect that capability sooner rather than later.

One Symptom, Three Levers: A Critical Review of On-Policy Self-Distillation

A review paper frames on-policy self-distillation collapse as governed by three levers: token weighting, privileged information, and guidance decay.

The paper critically reviews On-Policy Self-Distillation (OPSD), where a language model trains on its own generations scored token-by-token by a teacher conditioned on privileged information such as reference solutions or environment feedback. It identifies collapse, the progressive narrowing of producible reasoning paths, as the dominant failure mode and analyzes it through three levers: signal weighting, the nature of privileged information, and teacher dynamics. The review is restricted to mathematical reasoning, reports no new experiments, and offers a shared vocabulary separating settled findings from disputed ones.

Revisiting Complete Reasoning Traces for Post-Training

Researchers show full reasoning traces provide limited benefit in LLM post-training, with heavily truncated or endpoint-only trajectories performing comparably.

A pilot study plus attention-based analyses and controlled token-removal studies show intermediate tokens in reasoning trajectories contribute minimally to final reasoning quality. Partial trajectories remain effective even under heavy truncation, and training on endpoints alone leads to consistent changes in reasoning behavior. The finding also benefits reinforcement-learning and on-policy distillation post-training; code is released at github.com/naver-ai/revisiting-trace.

A*-Thought-V2: Efficient Latent Reasoning via Geometric Dynamics of LLM

A*-Thought-V2 compresses chain-of-thought into latent tokens using geometric hidden-state dynamics, cutting computation while improving accuracy on Qwen models.

A*-Thought-V2 models chain-of-thought as a hidden-state trajectory and interleaves explicit text with continuous latent tokens, compressing steps whose transitions deviate from the question-to-solution direction. Trained via stepwise embedding forcing and label forcing with soft multi-modal supervision, it was evaluated on Qwen3.5-9B and Qwen3.6-27B across six benchmarks. Reported results include up to 2.6% average accuracy gain, up to 50% shorter responses, 2.29x higher Accuracy per Computation Unit, 94.6% faster preprocessing, and up to 80.3% faster training.

ZGCM-1: A Fully Open and Extremely Efficient Foundation Model for Math and Agentic Search

ZGCM-1 is a fully open 7B foundation model with 256K context that stays competitive with frontier models on math reasoning and agentic search.

ZGCM-1 is a fully open 7B dense foundation model trained from scratch using an efficiency-focused recipe: interleaved gated sliding-window and full attention, a stable FP8 Muon optimizer, and MDP-based mid-training with context scaling across 16K, 64K, and 256K. On mathematical reasoning and agentic search suites it remains competitive with much larger frontier models such as Qwen3-235B-A22B and GLM-5.1. The recipe yields a ~4.2x improvement in 16K pre-training time-to-loss, and all weights, checkpoints, training code, data recipes, and W&B logs are open-sourced.

MindTopo: Can Foundation Models Reason in Topological Space?

MindTopo benchmark with 11,030 topological tasks shows 14 multimodal LLMs reason better than they plan and remain far below human performance.

MindTopo is a benchmark of topological intuition across five properties grounded in cognitive science and formal topology: continuity, separation, order, enclosure, and knots, evaluated at reasoning and closed-loop planning levels. It contains 11,030 instances across 13 procedurally generated task types with controllable difficulty, benchmarking 14 multimodal LLMs plus agent configurations using image and video generation, including three video generative models. Every MLLM performs better on reasoning than on planning, and the best-performing model remains far below observed human performance. On Qwen3-VL-2B-Instruct, supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning improve reasoning more than planning, and audited generated rollouts often fail to follow environment dynamics or preserve topology across transitions.

Negative Self-Distillation: Learning to Reason by Avoiding Flaws

Researchers propose Negative Self-Distillation (NSD), a label-free LLM self-improvement method that diverges from self-generated flawed reasoning rather than imitating privileged solutions.

The authors show On-Policy Self-Distillation can degrade complex reasoning by forcing imitation of artificially confident traces built on privileged information, suppressing uncertainty and self-correction. NSD instead generates a question-specific negative condition — such as acting as a 'careless reasoner' — and pushes the model's distribution away from it without ground-truth labels. A dynamic gating mechanism isolates reasoning-critical tokens so gradient updates fix behavioral flaws without damaging foundational linguistic capabilities. NSD consistently outperforms OPSD and other label-free, self-bootstrapping reinforcement learning baselines.

Unsolved Problem by Fields Medalist Breached by Two High School Students

Two high school students used Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol to help solve an open Lorentzian polynomials problem, posting a 75-page arXiv proof.

Aayush Bathija and Prince Rohatgi of Oak Park High School, mentored by UCLA postdoc Daniel Soskin, published the 75-page paper 'Bounded Ratios for Lorentzian Polynomials' (arXiv 2609.05341), solving an open problem in Fields Medalist June Huh's Lorentzian polynomial theory. The main structural theorem extends bounded coefficient-ratio characterization from quadratic to arbitrary-degree polynomials via discrete convexity conditions. The students used Claude Opus 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol for exploration and proof ideas but independently verified all arguments; the result follows an open letter from 25 Fields Medalists voicing concerns about AI's impact on mathematical rigor.

FlowBalance: Verifier-Grounded Self-Improvement from On-Policy Reasoning Experience

FlowBalance is a verifier-grounded self-improvement method that beats FlowRL on Qwen3-4B and Qwen3-8B math reasoning while improving training stability.

FlowBalance calibrates dense self-guidance scores with verifier-derived group advantages: guidance is retained on positive-advantage trajectories, reversed on negative-advantage trajectories, and disabled when rollout groups show no outcome preference. The method exponentially reweights a reference policy via trajectory balance, with guarantees including within-group contrast preservation and a minimum-change reverse-KL characterization. On mathematical reasoning it outperforms FlowRL on Qwen3-4B and Qwen3-8B, trains faster and more stably, avoids direct OPSD's response-length collapse, and shows higher correct-strategy diversity on AIME24.

Unfold The World: Factorize 4D Properties in Reinforcing Spatial Reasoning

FactoSR factorizes 4D spatial reasoning into XY, Z, and T reinforcement-learning sub-objectives, boosting VLM performance on VSI-Bench by 5.9% and All-Angles-Bench by 4.5%.

Researchers present FactoSR, a factorized reinforcement learning framework that decomposes world-consistent reasoning into planar correspondence, depth consistency, and temporal reversibility sub-objectives. Optimizing these verifiable constraints turns the ill-posed projection recovery problem into tangible reasoning steps. Evaluations show gains of 5.9% on VSI-Bench and 4.5% on All-Angles-Bench for 3D and 4D reasoning, arguing VLMs' spatial bottleneck stems from training on 2D projections versus latent 3D geometry and temporal continuity.

Towards a Deterministic Math Solver for Clinical Language Models

Paper shows handing arithmetic to a deterministic Python solver beats direct model calculation at 32B but not reliably at 7B on MedCalc-Bench.

Researchers test a Program-Solve interface where clinical LLMs write case-specific Python executed by a restricted local solver instead of doing arithmetic directly. On MedCalc-Bench Verified (1,100 cases, 55 calculators), Qwen2.5-32B-AWQ scored 90.53% with solver handoff versus 83.47% with direct arithmetic (+7.05 points), while Qwen2.5-7B gained an unreliable +3.29 points with a confidence interval spanning zero. The authors audited the benchmark against clinical guidelines and flagged 16 of 55 calculators for version, use, or coefficient concerns.

Lightning Weave: Improving the Accuracy-Efficiency Frontier of Reasoning Models through Capability Composition

Lightning Weave composes capabilities from independently post-trained models via on-policy distillation, improving Qwen3.5-4B reasoning accuracy while cutting tokens.

Lightning Weave is a post-training framework that merges accuracy and efficiency capabilities from independently post-trained specialist models into a single student via on-policy distillation. Each capability is represented as a policy shift, combined via aligned log-ratio shifts and Tilted-Target DOPD, enabling training without serving multiple live anchor models concurrently. On Qwen3.5-4B, it raises HMMT 2025 accuracy from 59.2% to 64.0% with 10.7% fewer response tokens, and LiveCodeBench v5 accuracy from 41.7% to 54.2% with 9.6% fewer tokens. The authors report a state-of-the-art accuracy-efficiency Pareto frontier across diverse students and math/code benchmarks, with code planned for release.

Training Specialist Models without Reasoning Trajectories for Domain Expert Distillation

Study shows specialists trained on question-answer pairs implicitly select latent reasoning trajectories, and tuning choices control the precision-generalization trade-off in distillation.

The work demonstrates that specialist optimization implicitly selects from a latent trajectory space when specialists are trained only on question-answer pairs without explicit reasoning supervision. Using student distillation as an agnostic probe across 27 specialist-student pairings, specialization-generalization profiles correlate exceptionally strongly. Explicitly controlling the specialist's distributional drift systematically shifts both teacher and distilled student along a controllable trade-off between domain precision and general-capability retention across chemistry, physics, and multilingual settings, even across divergent model families.

Verifiable Social Reasoning for LLM Assistants

Fuse, a multi-agent simulation with hidden motives, evaluates LLM social reasoning, revealing compounding difficulty from user mediation and bias sensitivity.

Fuse is a multi-agent simulation framework in which a target agent with a hidden motive interacts with other agents including one representing the user, who consults the evaluated assistant to infer the motive, providing verifiable ground truth by construction. Simulation faithfulness is validated through a human study with 24k annotations. Applied to 12 LLMs, it shows user mediation compounds social reasoning difficulty, models are systematically sensitive to biased user framing, models may need more details than humans, and longer conversations do not always improve performance. The framework and a 21k-example dataset are open-sourced.

Procedural Graphs: Self-Evolving Execution Structures for LLM Agents

Procedural Graph framework stores procedural knowledge as triplets and self-evolves via LLM refinement, beating memory-based baselines across datasets, tasks, and LLMs.

The Procedural Graph organizes procedural knowledge into (procedure, relation, procedure) triplets; at each decision step the framework localizes the agent's active node and a guidance model translates the surrounding subgraph into step-level guidance that biases the solver's next action. An LLM refiner contrasts failed with successful trajectories and edits the graph's topology and attributes, retaining rejected edits to discourage repetition. Starting from a minimal skeleton, the loop builds graphs that match or surpass hand-designed ones and can repair flawed expert priors, delivering consistent gains over memory-based baselines across multiple datasets, task types, and LLMs.

The longitude problem: In the AI era, detection is won on facts, not guesses

Opinion piece argues defenders should beat AI-era attackers by carrying verified ground truth about approvers, domains, and vendors instead of relying on inference.

CSO Online contributor Alan LeFort, CEO of StrongestLayer, uses the historical longitude problem to argue that AI-era detection should rely on carried facts—authoritative records of payment approvers, owned domains, and legitimate vendors—rather than probabilistic inference that both attackers and defenders can now perform with comparable reasoning models. He illustrates with a CFO wire-fraud example defeated by checking the approver of record and the reply-to domain against ground truth. The piece stresses that ground truth decays and must be continuously maintained, like chronometers kept wound on every ship.

Difficulty-Adaptive Tree-Structured Policy Optimization for Expanding Reasoning Coverage in RLVR

Researchers propose DATPO, a difficulty-adaptive tree-structured RLVR training method that expands reasoning coverage (pass@k) and improves test-time scaling on math benchmarks.

The paper identifies three rollout design principles for RLVR: difficulty-adaptive rollout expands pass@k, tree-based rollout beats parallel sampling, and sentence-entropy-guided forking overcomes token-level branching localization. DATPO combines difficulty-adaptive tree search with a sibling-diversity advantage term to promote semantic diversity during training. On mathematical reasoning benchmarks, DATPO outperforms baselines in pass@k, directly translating to superior test-time scaling performance.

ConvMem: Convolutional Memory for Long-Context Reasoning

Researchers propose ConvMem, a training-free framework treating LLMs as convolutional kernels for parallelizable long-context reasoning beyond fixed context windows.

ConvMem reformulates long-context reasoning as a hierarchical convolution in which the LLM summarizes text segments hierarchically, shortening the reasoning path from a linear chain to a logarithmic tree. It uses configurable strides, skip connections, and multi-kernel convolution to capture evidence, decompose queries, and enable massive parallelization across segments and reasoning threads. On RULER-HotpotQA and RULER-2WikiMultiHopQA it outperforms training-free baselines and avoids the out-of-distribution overfitting seen in RL-trained approaches like MemAgent.

Recognition-Refusal Misalignment in LLMs: Why Models Answer Structurally Unanswerable Questions

A linear hidden-state direction encodes question impossibility in 1.7B-70B LLMs, but misalignment with the safety-refusal pathway explains why models answer unanswerable questions.

The study examines why instruction-tuned LLMs from 1.7B to 70B parameters answer structurally unanswerable math and code questions instead of abstaining. A single linear direction in the hidden state separates answerable from impossible prompts, showing models represent impossibility before generation, but this direction is nearly orthogonal to the canonical safety-refusal direction. Generation-time steering along the recognition direction changes invalidity-aware behavior dose-responsively, and the geometry is present even at the pretraining endpoint, indicating a routing failure rather than an encoding failure.

Mathematicians want proof OpenAI didn’t use their work

Mathematician Andreas Thom publicly accused OpenAI of opacity over whether ChatGPT conversations contributed to its non-sofic groups mathematics result.

A second mathematician, Andreas Thom, accused OpenAI of 'dishonest' behavior and insufficient transparency about training data after OpenAI announced a result in non-sofic groups, Thom's area of expertise. He emailed OpenAI researchers Sébastien Bubeck and Mark Sellke asking whether his ChatGPT interactions fed training or reasoning, but found the answers did not rule out indirect use. The dispute follows Tristan Buckmaster's questions about the Millennium Prize Navier-Stokes solution, where OpenAI denied using specific user data but could not rule out de-identified usage data. Researchers told The Verge they worry such competition with AI labs will make mathematics more secretive.
