Rust Supply Chain Attack Puts Build-Time Malware in Crates with 245 Million Downloads

Compromised maintainer account published malicious versions of popular Rust crates with 245M downloads, delivering a build-time payload via typosquatted proc-macro1 dependency.

The Rust Project deleted malicious releases of arrayref 0.3.10, internment 0.8.7, and append-only-vec 0.1.9 from crates.io after a compromised maintainer account added a typosquatted dependency, proc-macro1, whose build script downloaded and executed a remote payload during compilation. Each malicious version was online for 86 to 107 minutes on August 20, 2026, before deletion. The build script disabled TLS validation and deployed OS-specific implants on Unix, macOS, and Windows, with builds alone sufficient to trigger execution. Wiz Research confirmed active exploitation, noting the impacted packages appear in 35% of cloud and code environments and over 75% of Rust-using environments; arrayref alone has 245 million all-time downloads and 403 dependent crates.

Re: Retrospective by 'gpg.fail' authors

Peter Gutmann replies to gpg.fail retrospective, pointing to PGP's arbitrary packet format as root of many past vulnerabilities.

Peter Gutmann posted a follow-up on oss-security referencing an Hacker News discussion of the gpg.fail authors' retrospective. The thread argues that a recurring source of severe PGP vulnerabilities is the format's permissive packet system, where a PGP message is a practically arbitrary stream of packets. This is discussion and retrospective analysis rather than a new disclosure.

StopAndProtect Turns 2,000 Hacked WordPress Sites Into a Criminal Network

Check Point uncovered StopAndProtect, a cybercrime operation using ~2,000 hacked WordPress sites for ClickFix-driven malware delivery, data theft, surveillance, and ransomware.

Check Point Research identified the StopAndProtect operation in May 2026; it abuses close to 2,000 compromised WordPress sites, many running outdated software, to host malware stages, act as C2, and store stolen data. Infection starts with fake CAPTCHA ClickFix prompts that trick visitors into running a PowerShell command, followed by .NET downloaders deploying ransomware, SMB/USB worm, lockscreen, chat, and credential-stealing components. Rather than always encrypting, operators selectively exfiltrate file lists and specific files; researchers found 700+ stolen-data archives, roughly 31,000 screenshots, and 6,000+ unique victim IP addresses, including WhatsApp activity monitoring.

CISA Warns Water Utilities: Find Your Exposed PLCs Before Attackers Do

CISA urged water utilities to secure internet-exposed PLCs after July 2026 attacks compromised over 100 US water and wastewater systems, suspected Iran-linked.

CISA's exposure-reduction guidance, published August 21, follows July 2026 attacks in which threat actors remotely accessed PLCs connected directly through cellular modems, changed device IP addresses and passwords, and in some cases disabled alarms and shutdown processes without notifying operators. Iran is the suspected actor, though officials stopped short of formal attribution. CISA recommends routing remote access through centrally managed secure gateways, phishing-resistant MFA, unique credentials, and external scanning of industrial protocols such as Modbus, EtherNet/IP, DNP3, BACnet and OPC UA.

gr-PHYSEC: Real-time Channel-based Key Generation for Physical Layer Secure Wireless Communications

gr-PHYSEC GNU Radio module derives symmetric encryption keys from wireless channel randomness using a neural network, validated on robotic platforms with ADALM-Pluto SDRs.

The paper introduces gr-PHYSEC, a GNU Radio out-of-tree module for real-time physical-layer key generation that derives symmetric keys from the wireless channel's inherent randomness instead of pre-shared secrets. A trained neural network extracts channel features between trusted parties during probe exchanges; features are quantized into binary keys, reconciled via Reed-Solomon encoding, and secured with SHA-512 hashing before direct use for encryption. Real-world experiments at the FAU CAAI connected robotics testbed using ADALM Pluto software-defined radios and NVIDIA Jetson Orin demonstrated low key disagreement rates and NIST-verified randomness. Researchers Use Claude to Port Pre-Auth RCE Exploit From One PLC Model to Another

Forescout used Anthropic's Claude to port a working pre-auth RCE exploit for CVE-2021-31886 between WAGO PLCs, executing ARM shellcode on live hardware.

Forescout Vedere Labs used Claude interactively to port an RCE exploit for CVE-2021-31886, a CVSS 9.8 stack buffer overflow in the Nucleus FTP server's USER command, from a WAGO 750-852 to a WAGO 750-831 PLC, running attacker-supplied ARM shellcode. The final RCE stage cost $535.74 in API usage over 8 hours 32 minutes, and a follow-up attempt to build a C2 implant permanently bricked the device. CERT@VDE lists many Nucleus V1-based WAGO models as vulnerable with no updates available; Siemens plans no Nucleus NET remediation. The work follows a joint NSA/CISA/FBI/DOE/EPA advisory warning of AI-generated exploitation scripts targeting internet-exposed Siemens S7 PLCs.

A Princeton Researcher Proposes Recurrent Looped Transformer (RLT) that Carries Decoder State across Every Token, Fixing 96 Blocks per Token with Unbounded Temporal Depth

Princeton researcher Yifan Zhang proposes Recurrent Looped Transformer, carrying full decoder state across every token for unbounded temporal depth.

Yifan Zhang's technical report defines the Recurrent Looped Transformer (RLT), pairing a causal encoder with a recurrent decoder whose final output and layerwise sliding-window attention cache carry into every subsequent token with no prompt-response boundary reset. The reference configuration ties 48 encoder and 48 decoder layers, executing 96 logical blocks per token while the state path grows to 48t blocks after t tokens at fixed per-token compute. The report details RL replay contracts that rebuild all states under current parameters and exact prefix snapshots for multi-turn serving, but explicitly reports no measured efficiency, reasoning quality, or scaling results.

VU#456290: Hugging Face Transformers library writes remote code to disk prior to consent check

CVE-2026-80047: Hugging Face Transformers 4.49.0 through 5.8.1 writes attacker-controlled Python files to disk before the trust_remote_code consent check.

CERT/CC vulnerability note VU#456290 describes CVE-2026-80047 in the Hugging Face Transformers library, affecting versions 4.49.0 through 5.8.1. The library performs a remote module fetch and writes attacker-controlled Python files to the local disk before evaluating the trust_remote_code consent prompt, without user authorization. This violates the security contract enforced across other dynamic module-loading paths in the library. Transformers is a primary framework for training and inference across NLP, vision, audio, video, and multimodal machine learning systems.

Plug 'n' Pray: Agentic LLM-based Detection of Potential Log File Exposures in Third-Party Content Management System Plugins

Agentic LLM analysis validates 79 log file exposures across 62 of the 300 most-installed WordPress plugins, covering 250M+ active installations.

Researchers built an agentic LLM-based framework combining static and dynamic analysis to automatically detect insecure log files created by WordPress plugins. Scanning the 300 most-installed plugins, which account for roughly 75% of all active installations in the official ecosystem, it produced 81 findings with 79 manually reproduced across 62 plugins.
